IstenSzek said: Mindflux said: I've got no problem with the lyrics and I'm one who can't stand the preaching. But, have people really had time to digest the lyrics yet? Probably not - but this is Prince talking about regrets, its unusually open. Particularly the line about wishing he could "Leave a note, you know one like husbands and fathers wrote" - to me, that's him regretting not being married and being a father....quite touching. i agree with you there. i don't have a problem with his 'preachy' lyrics at all if the songs are strong. stuff like "the word" or "lion of judah" are songs i simply like and i don't care about the lyrics at all. even though 90% of the time the lyrics in songs are very important to me. but backed by good music, lyrics can fit a certain mood, no matter if they are full of curse words or full of deep religious belief. some of the lines in this songs are very interesting. i just wish they would have popped up in something more special, lol. but hey, i'm glad a lot of folks seem to like it. we can't all like the same thing. it's not like i have personal beef with prince because i'm not feeling his current song or anything. i'm just a bit bland faced at the moment because i was hoping for something nice to listen to over and over again. Sure thing and, as I said, I appreciate your point of view. I'm not someone who expects anyone else to like anything, just because I do. I was not sure what to expect, but was pleased with what I heard - not gonna be the same for everyone though. But, raging through my studio monitors, the production was great, the breaks were how I like them and I actually enjoyed the lyrics, so all good for me I hope it grows on you, but no problem if it doesn't connect. ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

"if i could talk to myself again right now" Thanks for the transcription, IstenSzek. But I think I heard this line as such: "if i could talk to myself back then right now" What do you think. that makes more sense, indeed and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Sounds like a song they'd play with the guest star at the end of Sesame Street. And 9 to 5. Or the Thundercats theme tune. Stabiliser prog.
I'll probably think it's genius next week.

Quite suckish... Its not disconnected at all - there is an arching theme. Sure, he's talking about a lot within it, but what's wrong with that? Is there supposed to be a limit as to what you can allude to in a song? ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

NeoGeo24bit said: Review of the song "Cause and Effect"
The first half minute or so is interesting, I like the poppy breaks here and there. But the longer it went on, the less I liked it. It has the problem a lot of later era Prince songs have... it just rambles on and on with no pure structure at all. A song like I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man has a beautiful structure... hook... chorus... and real lyrics you can understand. That's why it's a great song and will be loved and remembered forever. But Cause and Effect doesn't have any of that. It just rambles on, sort of like Rock 'n Roll is Alive and Cybersingle. At the end Prince throws in a token guitar solo but that can't save this song at all. There's no real structure, hook, chorus, and the lyrics are too self centered and preachy to ever be a hit or a fan favorite. It was definitely embarrassing to hear so many great songs on The Current (Sloop John B!) and then hear this dreck from Prince, a rock 'n roll hall of famer. Listening to Cause and Effect, you'd never know Prince was a great musician. He should be writing songs that are meaningful... at the very least, songs that are well structured and enjoyable, especially after so many years of making music. I think he's spending too much time reading the Bible and hanging out alone at Paisley Park. It's time for Prince to make some music that touches people... and not in ways they'd rather not be touched. I'm gonna go listen to Pet Sounds now. Final Grade for Cause and Effect: D- Final Grade for Sloop John B: A+ [Edited 2/26/10 6:16am] I agree with that. There are too many changes in the song so it's hard to connect with. Sad to say Prince writes the best songs when he is telling a story of true love and vulnerability. It was just ok for me, Randy Jackson reply [Edited 2/26/10 6:49am]

I agree with most people here in that this is probably not as strong as we were wanting however I 100% agree with the person that said this will be a much better song live. It is good we heard the studio version first so we could get the dissapointment over with in advance...this is the opposite experience of Fury from 3121 which live was slammin and then when I finally heard the version on the record I was like "what the heck was that?".
