Sounds like the line from Rebirth Of The Flesh. Just listened to the track, its a thumbs up from me on the 1st listen. ..sharmone MF..!

When that LA radiostation premiered those 4 lotusflow3r-songs I was pleasantly surprised and I listened for weeks to the songs on a daily basis, especially "colonized mind".
But this time I feel nothing. It's not bad, but not really good either. A throway jam that I might listen to 3 times and then never ever again. [Edited 2/26/10 11:09am]

Very catchy, I like it! The only thing I'd change is the chorus, sounds a bit too nursury rhyme-ish. It's a very cool song though.
Also love how he gave it to a minneopolis radio station to premiere. This is probably the first song he's done since the Lotusflow3r set, so the next album will probably have a lot of better songs. Either way I don't see "Cause & Effect" as a filler of any kind so I'm looking forward to the next album.

Time changes, filtered vocal affects, gospel background vocals, weird live crowd noise, a scream and three guitar solos = this is acceptable. Even if the self-reflecting lyrics are still leaning way too far to the God side for my own personal tastes. It's better than anything on Lotusflow3r.

not liking it is cool but some of these posts...lol it's like, why aren't some of you out there making music given your obvious expertise in how a song should be structured? It now seems like dogging whatever he does is a badge of cool here among a certain crowd. Just my opinion after going through the pages of this thread.

"(Unintelligible) just make you smaller." Sounds like it could be "contacts" or "attacks." contracts Then he should man up and actually release something independently again. However, if you do that you stand the chance to loose money and you have to work three times as hard to get your record heard/played. So I guess loosing money makes you smaller than signing a new contract for each album. Right? Jus' sayin'.

Mindflux said: I've got no problem with the lyrics and I'm one who can't stand the preaching. But, have people really had time to digest the lyrics yet? Probably not - but this is Prince talking about regrets, its unusually open. Particularly the line about wishing he could "Leave a note, you know one like husbands and fathers wrote" - to me, that's him regretting not being married and being a father....quite touching.
However, as always, he is defiant because he has his beliefs and he isn't the "subject" of anyone else - meaning, in part, a lot of the shit that's typed about him round here has no meaning to him. You gotta love that FU attitude, whilst still maintaining a compassionate outlook. Doesn't sound like he has regrets, especially with the other lyrics in the song basically saying if you have regrets in your life, then you erase a part of your life that helped you grow into the person you are right now or that helped you to become a better you, from those life experiences. From that I also took that he is basically saying he doesn't feel the need to apologize for being the person he was in his past, because it is a part of him and he learned and grew from those experiences, whether considered bad, good or sad ones. He says he woulddn't change a thing but his next of kin (<-whomever they are who may have had an effect on his life). The part about leaving him leaving a note if this was in the "right now" or present day, with the way the world is today, is basically saying that the advice (which could be interpreted in many ways) that he would give himself if he was his own father, and he was the child of that father, is that you can't have it both ways in life--being a superstar and a grownup-or can be interpreted to saying you can't serve two gods, you have to make a choice to which path in life to take, and stay true and strong in that path, regardless of what anyone else thinks of you. Just my two cents. [Edited 2/26/10 11:43am]

Actually on second listen, I'd change a whole lot of the lyrics! They just make no sense to me, a good song should have lyrics that are easy to digest but this one is a head scratcher! The music is top notch but I think Prince should spend more time on his lyrics...

[Edited 2/26/10 11:09am] I think i know where your at.... the hook at the start of the song just is not heavy....it take until about 2.00min to get into it's groove then it's really good but for the first two minutes it's got no hook, the sample is great but the hey hey hey bit is abit weak... Not like PFunk or Turn Me Loose or the fantastic Colonized Mind... Still better than most other stuff out their in the charts Da, Da, Da....Emancipation....Free..don't think I ain't..! This song will have to grow on me. On the first listen, the music sounds like Prince is mixing The Beatles mid-60s sound of "Sgt Pepper" with his mid-80s sound of "Play in the Sunshine." The lyrics are not catchy enough for ME to want to memorize and sing years from now.
I'm looking forward to seeing Prince perform live! Any song, it doesn't matter.
