Actually, I like it
It's not a 'classic' Prince song, but if he fits into a album where all the songs compliment each other along with this song, it could end up being a brilliant album. I like it

I like the jam parts but the song is itself is pretty weak. Like 'Wall of Berlin" in a way. His songwriting has been really scattershot lately.

Cool! I just love it when Prince does these kinds of things.
FIRST IMPRESSION as the song ends is "My God it's doing my head in" head bangers rocker ball! But.....the whole song has too many different elements to brush it all with one brush. I like the lyrics, Prince's music is always intelligent. Of course he has profound nuances in there. "I am here...indeed...where are you????" Music does seem to run from love to anger. The interlude at 2.05 is hard but powerful and wonderful to enjoy when you need to rid yourself of excess energy. 2.41 returns to the spiritual accoustic sound. As if you've found your way back home after being hopelessly lost. From 3.53 it's really funky which flows into an added element of unpredictability. Great! The first end part is just too heavy for me. I can take speed up to 160 bpm but not heavy rock guitar but the real end is clean. Once again Prince shows his versatility in blending different musical styles perfectly. Keep em coming and thanks Current radio and Mars for the links. Now I'm gonna watch under the Cherry Moon on tv last night, which I've never seen. futurebaybeemama said: NeoGeo24bit said: Review of the song "Cause and Effect"
The first half minute or so is interesting, I like the poppy breaks here and there. But the longer it went on, the less I liked it. It has the problem a lot of later era Prince songs have... it just rambles on and on with no pure structure at all. A song like I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man has a beautiful structure... hook... chorus... and real lyrics you can understand. That's why it's a great song and will be loved and remembered forever. But Cause and Effect doesn't have any of that. It just rambles on, sort of like Rock 'n Roll is Alive and Cybersingle. At the end Prince throws in a token guitar solo but that can't save this song at all. There's no real structure, hook, chorus, and the lyrics are too self centered and preachy to ever be a hit or a fan favorite. It was definitely embarrassing to hear so many great songs on The Current (Sloop John B!) and then hear this dreck from Prince, a rock 'n roll hall of famer. Listening to Cause and Effect, you'd never know Prince was a great musician. He should be writing songs that are meaningful... at the very least, songs that are well structured and enjoyable, especially after so many years of making music. I think he's spending too much time reading the Bible and hanging out alone at Paisley Park. It's time for Prince to make some music that touches people... and not in ways they'd rather not be touched. I'm gonna go listen to Pet Sounds now. Final Grade for Cause and Effect: D- Final Grade for Sloop John B: A+ [Edited 2/26/10 6:16am] I agree with that. There are too many changes in the song so it's hard to connect with. Sad to say Prince writes the best songs when he is telling a story of true love and vulnerability. It was just ok for me, Randy Jackson reply [Edited 2/26/10 6:49am] It sounds like Prince is loving himself and God in this song. That's true Love IMO. This song makes me feel positive about him and where he's going.

And this would differ from any creative endeavor by anyone on earth in what way? "Scattershot" is the nature of art. It's just more pronounced in Prince's case because he puts so much out there. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Maaaannnnn, you guys...
As I read through some of these "comments", it makes me sad. I mean, I realize we are all here to give our opinions on Prince and his work, but dayum! A lot of people on here are just plain cruel and maybe should consider logging out for good on the org. Yes, the Viking song was not his best work. Ok, we know that. I accept that Prince too, as every other artist in the world, has good works and bad works. Can we please get over the bashing? I thought we were all here because we, at some point, felt it necessary to join a website for PRINCE FANS. If you have decided you are no longer a fan, and you think that everything he does sucks, then please- by all means- leave. "This is where the Purple Party People be!"

I just like to sing along to his songs and get into what he's saying, but I don't think I can with this one. I has some nice musical moments. I like the guitar towards the end and I think it's pretty at the part where he is using the auto tone (the music not the damn auto tone). I love Prince, though - so I'll keep listening and hope the next one touches me!

Lest we forget- the thread says Listen to and discuss. I've read many valid reasons why people think the song is not up to par for an artist of Prince's stature. Most of the posts in favor of the song say something thought provoking like, "I like it", or it's fonky (with an O) or some well thought out crap like that. The reason he gave the premier to the MPLS radio station is for people to tell him what they thought. Hopefull so he doesn't make the mistake of releasing this tune nationally. Prince, my man. We all want you to come out both guns blazing so release something else. NOT THIS! "If you wanted to buy a Sam Cooke album, where would you go?"
