The first half minute or so is interesting, I like the poppy breaks here and there. But the longer it went on, the less I liked it. It has the problem a lot of later era Prince songs have... it just rambles on and on with no pure structure at all. A song like I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man has a beautiful structure... hook... chorus... and real lyrics you can understand. That's why it's a great song and will be loved and remembered forever. But Cause and Effect doesn't have any of that. It just rambles on, sort of like Rock 'n Roll is Alive and Cybersingle. At the end Prince throws in a token guitar solo but that can't save this song at all. There's no real structure, hook, chorus, and the lyrics are too self centered and preachy to ever be a hit or a fan favorite. It was definitely embarrassing to hear so many great songs on The Current (Sloop John B!) and then hear this dreck from Prince, a rock 'n roll hall of famer. Listening to Cause and Effect, you'd never know Prince was a great musician. He should be writing songs that are meaningful... at the very least, songs that are well structured and enjoyable, especially after so many years of making music. I think he's spending too much time reading the Bible and hanging out alone at Paisley Park. It's time for Prince to make some music that touches people... and not in ways they'd rather not be touched. I'm gonna go listen to Pet Sounds now. Final Grade for Cause and Effect: D- Final Grade for Sloop John B: A+ [Edited 2/26/10 6:16am] Now this is a review! Yes its spot-on perfect. [Edited 2/26/10 7:10am]

I like it. It's personal and uplifting. Great groove, great guitar work, slow bridge.
Thanks Prince. "We are the freaks that want everything now!"

Does he sit there and think "They don't know what they're talking about... this song rules!", "I've lost it... I don't have the magic touch anymore.", or "I'm not going to release any vault songs until everyone agrees my new music is as good as my old music!" Or maybe he just doesn't care. But from listening to some of his music, it's clear Prince reads opinions on himself and his music that people post on the various threads. So I'd say he's a little hurt when his true fans don't like his new music. But I can't get down on Prince's music too much. He just gave the wrong track to the radio station. For every bad song he records, there have to be great ones, he probably just can't tell the difference. That's what Randy Newman said about him... that Prince doesn't know what songs of his are good and which are bad. It's too bad his recording engineer and the people that work for him can't tell Prince is something is hot or not. They probably fear for their jobs. But then again maybe Prince is putting the song out there to see what people think about it. That's why I gave specific reasons why I don't like the song instead of just saying "it sucks." Prince, tell us what you think! I think he looks at the grammys, brits, WMA, AMA's, Oscars etc.., in his house on the hill looking over his land, checks his bank balance, reads the music press about EMI losses, thinks about the 21 Nights Concert Record that still stands and laughs out loud...."maybe i do know something about music" Really ...we on the org may say this and that...but when Prince says i'm playing live we all (including the haters) dig into our pockets and buy a ticket... We really don't know what we are talking about when it comes to music ...we just choose when to buy and when not to buy his records...end of story. Hehe - on point. Because despite the long years of drought we all hope Prince can rediscover his songwriting form. Alas that appears ever more remote as the years pass. i wonder why people don't like "lotusflower" more. i can be quite critical of his work and i'll say it when i don't like something, but that album is just brilliant imo. mplsound, i don't care for. i like a few tracks but it doens't feel like an album and there's some poor stuff on there. but the lotusflower title disc is a real good, tight, cohesive prince album all the way. whenever i listen to it, which is a lot, i enjoy it the same way i enjoyed the gold experience when it was finally released. start to finish a good effort with a few quirky things you keep going back to. straight up solid and beautiful vocal performances, songs with melodies that stick in your mind and top notch, grade a playing on all instruments. i can see why people don't like some of the other stuff he's released since his break from warners. like, i understand how people would hate TRC, because of the lyrics or the narration but it's a superb album in all respects to me (you guessed it, i love TRC a tremendous amount). but "lotusflower" doesn't have any of those things that might rub people the wrong way. it doesn't outstay it's welcome on any single song, it's got an overarching concept that doesn't infringe on the separate songs and it's just, well, good not trying to tell anyone they should like something or that their taste is wrong or anything but i'm just curious why people keep saying that prince lost his skills many years ago and releases nothing but sub par material. he just releases a lot more and some of it is questionable, but at the end of the day, i'm still happy with a few solid enjoyable albums once in a while and a whole bunch of so-so songs that i enjoy on occasion. if he'd put all that stuff in the vault i'd be hunting it out on bootlegs. he's just releasing it now in one form or another, and that's not a bad thing. even if not all of it is to my tastes. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I hear u...lol....There are some folks who sincerely don't like the song..And I can respect that....But you read comments from folks who have been shitting on Prince for close to a decade...You have to wonder why they do it to themselves...The hyperbole on both sides is getting ridiculous... My own thoughts of the song?...The beginning is cheesy, but it heats up....I dig the guitar works and the ending is killer...Overall a very see-saw type song with some cool moments...But certainly it's not as horrific as some of the regulars are making it out to be... That honor is reserved for the "fight song..."

Well I'm obviously not where you are! 'Cause if I was, I'd probably understand better what the heck you are trying to Effect with your music lately! I'm just saying! So anyway... Lyrically - not great! Music wise - pretty good! Could have definitely done without the audience noise! If I want live (or live like) I'll go to a concert. Honestly though I think it's time for Prince to do a 'just music' album(s) like Joe Satriani or something (with LOTS of guitar) but without being heavy on the jazzy feel. Just my 2 cents! However one thing is true without a doubt and that is Cause & Effect is 100% freakin' better than the 'fight' song for the Vikings. Of course after that song there was nowhere else to go but up or retirement. Peace! thanks for your insightful thoughts..NOT Next.. What on earth is wrong with that review? blah blah blah

Prince has produced several songs in the last few years that I think are far superior to this. I'm not saying this is a bad song. It's cool, but to say Prince doesn't have it in him to do anything like this is a stretch. Does that mean she's a musical genius too? You know how many Beyonce albums I have? None. But she's popular I guess, so people do enjoy it. I'm sure Prince records so much music, some is recorded just because he's a musician and records all day. So of course every song isn't going to be a hit, or a cult/fan favorite. But Cause and Effect is in no way album worthy. If he wanted to release some outtakes, alternative versions, etc, then this song would be welcomed. But not as a "hot new track from Prince." The Lotusflow3r sessions were much more exciting. The response to Crimson & Clover, Wall of Berlin and Colonized Mind was much better. [Edited 2/26/10 7:21am]

No one is giving him a sense of direction musically, and he probably does not NEED it, however when it comes to production there should be somebody at least saying "HEY..come on now with that mess... On first listen... I like it!
It is a bit in the vein of C&D but more developed and the hooks are fierce! Yes...nothing ground breaking but a cool song and yes it does sound like Parton's 9to5! hahahaha After the break it reminds me a bit of Dave Matthews Band Didnt it say somewhere that this was a unreleased track? So maybe it is from 95-96 The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

The fantastic thing about Prince is we all follow him 4 a variety of reasons. I've never hailed his work as being the ultimate exponent of lyrical/musical perfection. He intrigued me through essence and diversity. His work simply represents one mans expression. His music inspired me to explore my own creativity. He is but an artist on a journey. Conveying his experience 4 those that wish 2 listen. Not everybody is going 2 "Get It"..... Artists create. sometimes our choice of language is obscured by our own personal bias/restrictions. We learn, we evolve. Prince had his moment of Global sync. Maybe there is still part of him that Loves his fans approval/validation. However, I think sometimes his own creative needs come first No matter the cost.

I never cared what others thought of Prince's music, especially not on this site where being negative seems to be the "in" thing, but I was genuinely surprised that Lotusflow3r was not better received. I think there is some great stuff on that album, and a few good songs on MPLSound, namely the ballads on that one. However, the musicianship, creativity, and composition on Lotusflow3r made it one of my favorite Prince albums. Like you, I have no problem stating when I am not digging something that P releases, but in the case of Lotusflow3r, I didn't have any major issues with that album. I usually play it all the way through. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...
