since "1999", in feb. 1983.

http://prince.org/msg/7/304613

I became a fan in feb. 1983:

I bought the 1999 double vinyl in a local record store, I have been a fan since, but I'm not so much a fan today like in 1983 to 1995,

my first disappointment was Emancipation, then NPS, Rave, The Vault,

TRC and the new LF albums are better, but still not that excellent like 1978-1995 (imo). Let's face this: the Warner Bros. years were outstanding, since 1995 the music hasn't been on top level (imo),

but Prince is still great live, 2007 in London was amazing.

I've answered this a few times before:

Somewhere around the "Sign O' the Times" album is when I'd call myself a "fan". I love that record! music
Although I liked a couple of things here and there throughout jr. high school and high school (early 80s), I wasn't "feeling" him until college, where I lived with a roommate who played him night and day. I started to hear things that weren't on the radio (she was a "collector" lurking when they were on cassette), and was like "Wow!" boogie

I first saw him live in '96, and that sealed it! There was no turning back. nod

I got hooked when I saw the Cream video around 1992, it sounded so different from all the other hits at the time. I was about 14 years old when it happened.

Since i was born,it was the summer of 89 when my dad bought the Batman soundtrack and my mom was pregnant with me,and my dad was already a fan of Prince. So my earliest memory is me at 4 years old and riding in the car with my dad and begging him 2 rewind PARTYMAN over and over, then he introduced me to Purple rain movie and syracuse live. So i had to have them all,i eventually became obsessed by him. Here i was at 6 and 8 years old in school and drawing pictures of Prince (still have them btw). So i remained a fan until 98 when i got the NPS cd and i thought it was terrible at the time and he wasnt on the radio and i was tired on getting picked on 4 liking him. 6 years went by,and it was 2004 and i saw Musicology in wal mart and i almost didnt get it,but i got it anyway and thought it was just ok,so then i pulled out my old albums and i understood them now that i was older, then in 2006 he released in my opinion a great CD,and its been great since.

I first remember seeing Prince when the Little Red Corvette video was playing on MTV. I was just a little kid. 6 years old. I think I only remember it because my older cousin told me "That guys name is Prince, and he has sex with the girls in his band ON STAGE!!!" Of course this wasn't true, but I was 6, so I totally bought it. This pretty much exploded my brain since I barely even had any idea what sex was at the time. The following year the same cousin bought Purple Rain on vinyl and we listened to it day after day after day. There are still home videos of me as a little kid learning to breakdance while listening to that record floating around somewhere... Anyway, I fell in love with Prince's music about that time.

I was a senior that year also. "Purple Rain" came out the summer before my senior year....
