Sorry Ya'll! ONA is Really Good! Listening to ONA tonight for the fifth time since I bought it and I am not hearing what some org members hear...except for the abbreviated versions of some classic songs I am so loving this long box collection! I don't really get the negativity for it?! Why? I think it is great. I really love some of the songs on here that I don't enjoy as much on the albums--TRC, for instance. "Strange Relationship" on this album is the version I like best! What are the good and bad elements you think are applicable to ONA? (Nobody can change my mind--I really like it!)

I thought you were talking about the piano album at first. ONA Live has some good points. The Rainbow Children material is great. I enjoy those songs much more live than on record. Xenophobia is slammin' too. The feet and ass part of ONA Live was the cut and paste, truncated performances, the preaching and the barftastic "Peach(WTF?)" and "2 Nigs United 4 West Compton"... I mean, c'mon - that performance had nothing to do with the incredible Black Album track, so after seeing the track-listing and then listening to the song, I was a tad disappointed. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Tis true what you say about the truncated portions of songs--that is disappointing--but what is there is very good IMO. The disappointing factor is that you want the complete versions of the songs. But, none the less, I enjoy the collection as a whole. I have no real complaints about the material that is there--it's very good!

I really love Anna Stecia on this CD--pumps me full of great feelings and self determination--a great set! Joy In Repetition is really awesome on this set IMO! [Edited 2/15/10 1:15am]

it is good but WE ALL know that there are boots out there that a. sound better and b. the performances are vastly superior.
The one major highlight of ONA Live (for me) is that bas ass version of Joy In Repetition. I actually can't remember what else on it. Haven't listened to it in ages.

I can maybe get one CD's worth of good tunes out of it, but even then, it wouldn't be fully satisfying. A minute of I Wanna Be Your Lover? Come on. And then all the religious gobbledygook that ruins Anna Stesia. Sad, really.

I hate it because he uses this GREAT song to advertise his NPGMC-club. Those "join the club!"-chants are blasphemous to me.

Since I haven't heard another version of Anna Stecia, I enjoy this one... If there's a better version of Joy In Repetition I would be amazed... I don't think the one on ONA live can be improved on much...

I actually love this performance of it, not crazy about adding the club commerical but i really don't blame him either. Not everyone knows it all like us!! LOL
I also enjoy all the religous additions..... LIVE4LUV

It does have some great moments, though, particularly on It Ain't Over. I love Alphabet St. and even 2 Nigs United 4 West Compton (despite the fact that it's not really that song). That whole disc is pretty good, although I find We Do This to be absolutely unlistenable.

really dug this box when it came out as well but after time it stales well the rainbow children stales ... i still dig xeno and the piano medly specially adore and the after show has some classics joy we do this just friends but mostly after repeated listening its just not my cup of tea .. the thing about rainbow period is that the music is pretty good sometimes as is always the case with prince but the lyrics take a major downhill slide. its like taking a class on math instead of poetry .. his lyrics are intellectualized and lack genuine truth that comes from honest poetry .. if hes not preaching he is trying to sound cooler than he is anymore .. i can understand ur appreciation for the record its more listenable than some of his previous and post work .. especially for the more organic sound of his band .. but as you discover more and more of his truly mindblowing work this album will fade from your interest and at times u may have a hard time listening to it at all. thats what happened to me anywayz ... one other note ... for the it being the first live prince record it totally sucks cuz prince could have patched together a live record that would have blown everyones mind easily .. best tracks from shows over the years ... kinda like crystal ball ... what could have been so out shines what it was it is very very hard to understand prince logic unless his true quest is to achieve mediocrity

Are you a leader or a follower?
Even though I find the lyrics repugnant, Family Name is a helluva jam. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

And I adore the version of Adore on there. I like it better than the album version.

I think One Night Alone is a great set. Of course I live in Portland, OR so I'm a little biased... I have managed to get no less than 4 people to become total Prince fans when they NEVER were even a casual fan, just by playing them this set. The HARDCORE acolytes aren't gonna be totally in love with it because they have heard 30 better bootlegs, performance-wise. I get that. However, right now this is the only official live Prince performance that is available officially outside of the dvd from Vegas which, frankly, was a much more lackluster set if you ask me. All in all though it's a better live album than most artists put out I think.

You bought the ONA Live box before you bought Lovesexy. I'm mostly a fan of that set, but man, you're doing it wrong.

yeah, i hated the clinical run-throughs on first bootlegged minidisc, but then i embarked on a six month course of ecstasy tablets and that trombone solo just killed it. straight up.
Still no Zappa, mind. Cx me and mine still have a "expecting to get your Purple Rain on..." grizzle. It's an izzle for the unarticulated. [Edited 2/16/10 16:56pm]
