When this track first got released I was massively peeved at how much of a rip-off Prince it was.
It even has the "ooow" that Prince does. http://www.youtube.com/wa...ikiBuLfUDg [Edited 2/1/10 6:10am]

sms130 said: This has prince all over it! No disrespect sms130... this is just my opinion... and it goes for more than a few of these posts. "Prince-esque" should not include samples of Prince's music. That's just my opinion. I mean... that's not "Prince-esque", that's PRINCE! Although I respect people like P-Diddy for what they've accomplished, I don't consider a guy who's made a living on sampling other peoples shit, a true artist. They're just wanna-be's. It's kinda like someone stealing someone elses identity with a credit card. It's bullshit. Not right. Sure, some of the songs are catchy, but let's not praise "samplers" for having the "GENIOUS" (please see the sarcasm) to take someone else's hit and make money for themselves off of it. To me, that's not talent. That's "paid-for" theft. Artists like Jesse Johnson... at least he was directly influenced, hence the sound. I think he qualifies... but please... let's omit samplers. There's nothing talented about them. They're only opportunistic whores... but that's just me. With all of this being said... this is a FANTASTIC thread. It's opened my eyes up to many other artists who are "Prince-esque" that I'm enjoying listening to now! [Edited 2/1/10 16:04pm] The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

Come on MantuaPharoah, this is not even a sample. They just did a great interpretation. At least he didn't take a Prince sample and loop it. He re-create it with his twist 2 it. Oh yeah, Diddy and Mario Winans did the production. Mario's a big Prince fan, he's stated in the past that he owns some of those old keyboards, the Linn Drum machine, and etc. He made that record real purple, u gotta admit.

that IS a sample of the drums in Erotic City and they completely ripped the melody too [Edited 2/1/10 16:30pm]

So you're saying that what Vanilla Ice did with Ice Ice Baby was "Bowie-esque"? LOL... No... it was Bowie! With rapped over tracks... with a "little twist" as the Vanilla man so eloquently put it. No... no... I don't buy it. And this track here is OBVIOUSLY Erotic City!!!! I'm not hatin' on P. Diddy. I think he means well. Hey, we all want to make a buck with just a little effort. Diddy takes the cake. Just not a fan of samplers. Yes, I like much of what they've done because it's reminiscent of the original tune, but it's not talent. That's just my opinion. One perfect example is Bigge Smalls - Juicy. But then again, he took the track from Etume - Juicy, and made a mega hit. True the rapping was original, but the track was not. Hmmm... gotta love P. Diddy... also the producer of THAT mega-hit! lol [Edited 2/1/10 16:36pm] The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

Ok, I have one to add:
Satisfied by Squeeze. The music is very much Prince-esque, but they're doing their own thing with the vocals. Bassline, drums, finger cymbals...sounds good, as well as familiar.

Damn, u're right I haven't hear this song in a long time. I had 2 listen real close with the headphones. They really covered the original Limm drums up real well. 4 a while I didn't think this was a sample I thought they just re-did that beat from scrap, I guess not huh. It didn't sound like they could have 2 loop Prince's Erotic City. I knew that they mixed in Erotic City along with When Doves Cry (as far as the drum rhythm and patterns). I knew that they took a little but, not alot. Never did I really think that this was a loop. Which is why Prince didn't clear the sample 4 that 2 b an official single. I just put it on here bcuz, it really has that purple vibe 2 it and not just totally bcuz of the sample. Especially the fact that Keyshia Cole's did tha damn thang on that record. I thought they really made it brought that Prince sound out but, not as a sample. OK, which one would u rather play Diddy's 'Last Night [remix]' or Midnite's 'Supa Nova Slom'? My vote for best and most Prince-esque track goes to Laurnea - Infatuation. The beat, the sound, the vocals (harmonies as well as solo), screaming wah guitar, synths and content matter. It hits all things Princey. http://www.youtube.com/wa...VybgdB09o4 You're welcome. I think more people should hear that JB song. Laurnea had Prince's vocal cadences down pat.. Youre almost convinced Prince wrote the song when you first hear it -dolphinking23

World Party aka the one-man band of Karl Wallinger has several Prince influenced tracks.
This one, Private Revolution, is one of them: although the vocals are more akin to Mick Jagger and Bob Dylan and the melody is more 'pop', the Linn drum, the synth horns, and the 'out of tune' sound in the background (reminding me of the Ballad of Dorothy Parker) are clearly influenced by Prince. Another one: especially the vocals and the guitar-work Other Prince-influenced songs by them: It can be beautifull (sometimes), Is it too late?, Show me to the top, Love Street, Give it all away (reprise), Rescue me, This world, Always. This one is preety Prince-esque I think. And I don´t mean it in a bad way. RK is a great Artist in his own right. But the dance-moves, the clothing...you get the point. Nonetheless it´s a pretty funky track and shows RK´s great showmanship. -If you fake the Funk your nose will grow- (The Pinocchio Theory)

Wow! Thank you for sharing this. I never knew this was a Jeff Buckley song. It's my favorite song by Kenny Lattimore---almost exactly the same (vocals included except Kenny's has a tadbit more soul). Love it!
