while i think its lame that Prince is a jw it doesnt change the fact that i dont even know him so the last thing im going to worry about is his faith. its all about the music to me (and should be to everyone else) and i dont think larry had much influence on the quality of his meterial. lotusflow3r and mplsound have quite a few classic prince moments and i cant complain about the direction he is heading in. As a long time Prince fan (started) back in around 1980 when a friend of my parents brought over some Prince for them to listen to....and lurker here I felt somehow compelled to join in this debate....
Now I don't want to get into the JW thing, I have my reasons for no agreeing with their stance and ways but the Larry thing? Now that's a whole different subject.... I find him an only slightly above average bass player and I don't think he contributed at all to P's music in a positive way. I remember travelling to London (from the North East of England) to see one of only 2 shows P was doing in the 90's- can't remember the exact year - and Chaka khan was support, cool thinks I! Unannounced Larry takes the stage and played almost an hour of the most turgid repetative sub P leftover music meaning P was later than expected and only got to see half of his set as had to bail to get back for the coach..... unforgivable! Next time I saw Larry was on TV duening an "interview" P was giving around the time of Rave - now we know P doesn't like this situation but he seemed very uncertain of his new persona and kept looking to Larry to interject with his spiel.....I found it worrying then that this guy had so much control over P. Since then I feel (and it is my feeling and won't agree with everyone) that musically P has floundered for a musical spark, lost his excitement and generally become a shadow of his former self. No one can say would what have happened for sure, but I'm not so sure I'd change the whole Larry thing. I think it's time to give Larry a break. I know some of you are gonna be snarky about this, because you simply can't help yourself and you probably have a soft spot for stard who burn out quick (pick one) or stars who tried to keep the "edge" they had well into old age (pathetic Madonna), but I kinda like the person Prince is now, and Larry had a lot to do with it. thats how those cults get you. they get you when you are most vulnerable. Larry is a pioneering bass genius but they are both lost in a ridiculous cult. Prince is very very smart and I think one day he'll wise up and leave them. Larry is more old school so he'll be with them for life I know thats Right! |
