Well it is a Prince video after all.

In relation to the whole film, I have two points of interest: During the beginning of the Love or Money sequence, Mary visits Christopher's apartment, (prince is bare chested with a head wrap on). Near the end of the scene (50:02), just as Tricky is saying "I know! Why don't we spend it?!", Prince is fumbling in his pockets and pulls out what looks like either a wallet or some folded paper. Now I'm not sure if Prince is acting here, it seems very ad hoc and unless Prince was taking tips from Marlon Brando, it looks like Prince has geniunely found something in his pocket he wasn't expecting. A minute later, just after Prince bargains for the Porsche, he asks Mary to 'hop into her new car'. She replies, "this is as far as I want to get". Prince responds to this but I've never been able to work out what he says. Any thoughts? O+> Prince grabs a dollar bill from the bag and sneaks it in his pocket when she's not looking. In the car, he responds to Mary and says "for now". Remember, you can also turn on the captioning to get the dialog most times. I've noticed when watching PR that the captions don't always say exactly what the 'actor' said in the film

I'm ever so tempted to take a screengrab of the Sheila record, but I think DVD is R1 and the player in my PC is R2.
Someone else do it. | |

Cravens said: I agree. I think the video looks rather .. rushed. The harsh, blue outlines may be excussed by the technology available at the time, but still, the format changes and the (badly rendered) snippets from the movie are just amateurish, compared to the other videos from that album. (And wasn't this the second single off Parade? Seems weird to follow up a hit like Kiss (and its far more superior video) with a video like Mountains in the age of videos.
[rhetorical]I wonder if Prince himself did the editing, thinking "if I can direct, I can edit as well?[/rhetorical] Not that any of this adds to the discussion. it was anything but rushed review form the now defunct thedatabank site ; Mountains Video Filming April 1986 Numerous different takes of "Mountains" / B&W crowd footage intended for "Under The Cherry Moon" COMMENT Watching this is like being let into a secret. Various takes of Prince & The Revolution performing the video for Mountains - verse after verse, take after take, camera angle after camera angle. It's quite hard to sit through the entire thing without hitting the FF button, so God knows what it was like actually DOING it. Although Wendy & Lisa's faces during their part of the filming appears to show how they felt - bored, tired and very pissed off. Prince's dance moves are a joy to watch, as are him and Jerome fooling about. Bobby Z drumming totally out of synch with the music (and looking like he's gonna explode!). And Lisa blowing her fringe out of her face - I counted (no joke here!!!) 95, yes 95 times within the first 40 minutes - I gave up after that! Brilliant , but repetitive.

with the Porsche again, and he definitely does not say "for now'. That may be what's captioned and would certainly make sense but it just doesn't sound like it. Thanks for the reply! He says "For now, anyway". I didn't get that from the CC, I got it from hearing. And it makes perfect sense too, because she's still taking it slow with him, whereas he wants to jump her right then and there. [Edited 1/11/10 12:17pm]

Here's the Miles Davis record, You're Under Arrest
I can't make out the record behind the chair, but it has the word "GOLD" in the title, and it's a female singer.

The record behind the chair is Aretha Franklin's "Aretha's Gold" O+>

Can we have a third opinion?! lol I looked again, and corrected my earlier reply. He says, "For now, anyway." The subtitles said the same thing. This is only the 2nd time I've checked the subtitles for something, the other being "Quel scandale!" which means "What a scandal!", a recurring Prince turn of phrase - that phrase in English later appeared on one of the segues on the album.

A bit back on topic:
Here are three stills: One is widescreen matted, one is 4:3, and then there's the rough edges I spoke about. The widescreen shot is VERY rough and unpolished compared to other wide shot blue screen shots later on. It even has a weird corner on the top left.

you can see the chrome drum stand is reflecting the blue thus putting the clouds on the stand itself. As far as the edge blur that would have been fixed or at least minimized with some minor adjustments to the levels of the sky and the band shot.
I wonder guess they must have intended to release it black and white? "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

I wonder guess they must have intended to release it black and white? It does look better in black and white overall. But the rough edges on the 3rd picture, and the back and forth w/ 16:9 and 4:3 is cheap. Those bent corners at the beginning are in the movie too (I have it in my PC DVD player), as the credits start to roll. I had to laugh at whoever said "'Alphabet St' makes 'Mountains' look like Avatar." hahahaha

Nice. Thanks for posting
I knew about the Miles Davis album, but I'd never seen the Sheila E. 12" before. I know it well, Sister Fate is one of my favs. BTW, if you look closely, you can briefly spot a tub of Crisco by the side of the bed too, thus confirming Christopher and Tricky's "special" relationship once and for all . Oh come on. Meteorologists and weathermen on podunk town stations looked better against a map of the US than Prince did in that video. LOL (Of course, it got worse with Alphabet St.) It's one thing to shoot on video, but the whole green screen thing is just lazy. Same goes with "The Screams of Passion".

Mountains is one of the best pop songs written ever. The song takes nice twist at the end, and really isn't your average pop song at all.
The video is...meh... charming for it's tackiness.

You guys are too hard in general on Prince videos. He is the center of all attention and therefore his videos need not be filled with top of the line special effects, visually stunning choreography or celebrity guest appearances. Let it go.

ernestsewell said: I wonder if this is just bad editing (especially the letter box vs 16:9 thing), the coloring...etc. Although I love the song (I was SO into this when it came out), the video seems a bit sloppy. Well I love the song too, but I like the video even more than the song. Yeah one could say that technically it aged and that it's fucked up but Prince's moves are cool and the video is so psychedelic and kitsch. I mean, time gave it even more style.

There's a little movie called Star Wars that came out in 1977... BINGO! Lucas fucking mastered green and blue screen technology, and indeed Star Wars was made 10 years before "Mountains".
