Defend mode again!:

Nothing is wrong with the Mountains video for christs sake.

It's a bit amateurish ... so what.

the outfit and dance routines are still amazing.

If you think Mountains is the worst fucked up video that was on MTV back then you are wrong. Despite a lot of amateurish videos from various artists, MTV was still a lot more interesting back then in the 80s than what MTV it is today.

I consider Mountains a Prince classic, it's charming.. if you guys wanna critisize... then citisize the bad Prince era 1996 to 2009 for fuck's sake. Those Prince music videos 96-09 are really bad. The recent videos doesn't have the charm of the 1980s/ early 1990s Prince videos.

To critisize a Prince classic from the Parade album... is actually a bit silly and dumb, imo.

Mountains.... is not fucked up imo... but is a Prince classic...

I just love this video, it's a hell of a lot more charming that the product we see on MTV today.... worship heart

the video production 2 Mountains seems similar to the Screams of Passion video

Mountains is much better than the rush seriously bad production of Alphabet St.

I still think the Parade videos are the best of his career:Kiss, Mountians, Girls & Boys, AnotherLoverHolenYourHead

Interesting thread.

In relation to the whole film, I have two points of interest:

During the beginning of the Love or Money sequence, Mary visits Christopher's apartment,
(prince is bare chested with a head wrap on). Near the end of the scene (50:02), just as Tricky is saying
"I know! Why don't we spend it?!", Prince is fumbling in his pockets and pulls out what looks like
either a wallet or some folded paper. Now I'm not sure if Prince is acting here, it seems very ad hoc
and unless Prince was taking tips from Marlon Brando,
it looks like Prince has geniunely found something in his pocket he wasn't expecting.

A minute later, just after Prince bargains for the Porsche,
he asks Mary to 'hop into her new car'. She replies,
"this is as far as I want to get". Prince responds to this
but I've never been able to work out what he says.

Any thoughts?

O+>

Prince grabs a dollar bill from the bag and sneaks it in his pocket when she's not looking.

In the car, he responds to Mary and says "for now".

Remember, you can also turn on the captioning to get the dialog most times.

Damn dude,,u just have nothing nice to say but just keep picking P's art apart...its very pedestrian of u. Anyway u are going on vacation soon?

Kiss, When Doves Cry, U Got the Look were full productions (the tail end of When Doves Cry, but the movie clips worked well if you hadn't seen the movie at the time)

I wonder what a video for "If I Was Your Girlfriend" would have been like...

Agreed. Prince had some great videos in the 80's with and without the Revolution. "Raspberry Beret", "Kiss", "America", "U Got The Look", "Glam Slam", "I Wish U Heaven" (Blue Screen and SO much better), "Anotherloverholenyohead", "Girls And Boys".....etc. So there are a lot of decent videos of 80's Prince. I still love "Mountains", it just has some issues that stick out, whereas the other videos from the album stand well on their own without those problems.

Those are issues you only noticed because you watched the special Lucas did on a DVD, telling you what was wrong. NO ONE noticed the see through snow speeders back then in Empire Strikes Back. No one noticed the blobs around the tie fighters back then. No one gave a shit about the smudging under Luke's land speeder. The FACT is that Star Wars' technological and film making advances set the public and the industry on its fucking ear.

People sat up, took notice, and made it the #1 movie in 1977, outselling the #2 film, a little shindig called Close Encounters Of The Third Kind (which also made huge leaps in film making technology) by over $160,000,000. So yeah.....those things you listed.....irrelevant at this point. People didn't notice them then, or gave a shit.

The movie wasn't out on video until the mid 90's so it wasn't like people were sitting around picking apart those mistakes and drawbacks over those decades from the time Jedi was in theaters until A New Hope was finally released on VHS and eventually DVD.

I noticed the see through speeders and some of the 'force shields' on the THX VHS versions as well as the gimbel bar that lifts the falcon out of the Death Star hanger bay.

Oh and the first videos for Star Wars came out in the early 80s. And the trilogy was out by the 1990.

I believe you, but honestly I think you might be in the minority on that one. No doubt it was there, but me myself...I was so awestruck by it, I couldn't have cared less to find those errors or worry about them.

However, let's remember the idea in this series of replies is that Lucas set a new standard in Blue Screen technology. "Mountains" looks like it's a newer technology, but yet Lucas used it 10 years before and 98% nailed it. That's all I think people are saying.

There was an old board a newsgroup called rec.arts.starwars and some splits of that. They would talk about all that nerd stuff.

While in my country we starved for Prince, or any other great videos at the time, yes, do compare with the likes of Grace Jones' during the era.

See the rough edges around that? It's worse when actually watching it. There's one shot in the movie, when "Love or $" starts, and there's a very, very dark shadow on the right of the screen. VERY bad editing error.
[Edited 1/11/10 12:21pm]

It's actually more a result from very bad back lighting. It would have been labor intensive to get that glow border off of him, sort of ILM level work, and pretty expensive.... almost rotoscope fbf work. It would be hard even with todays digital equipment.

I kind of believe he did it on purpose. I think he wanted a campy look.

I've kind of thought that, too. Like, he just thought the blue edges 'looked cool', and wouldn't let anyone explain to him that they looked cheap and rushed.

Man... I'd kill to hear from some of the Under the Cherry Moon production/post-production crew. Have they all been gag-ordered, too???

It's confusing because the Mountains video looks like interlaced video that has been keyed off a bluescreen... and all people on here talking about greenscreening, etc, are talking about film (very different).

The mountains video needs to be compared to the tv weatherman reports (keying live) in 1986.

Somebody do a frame per second count of the color version of the Mountains video. Is it approx 24 or 30 frames per second?

Yeah, I think the same too. The fact that it's so obviously unreal makes it more... fantastical. It makes absolutely no effort to look realistic - and I applaud its trash aesthetic.
