Prince really did snub Slash

Just came across the article, firgured it'd be neat to read the whole tidbit.

-Speaking of booze, let's go back to this time last year and the American Music Awards. You gained national headlines when you nonchalantly said "f**k" on live television. What exactly happened that night?

The fu**ing music awards . . . What happened was I got this phone call the day of the show asking if I wanted to go. We were nominated for two awards, and someone from the band needed to accept if we won. So me and Duff and our girlfriends all got drunk and flipped on down there after a stop at Carl Jrs. When we arrived, it was mass confusion, the whole paparazzi thing. I really didn't give a shit; I just wanted to hang out and have a good time. Anyway, we had third-row seats, and the show was real cheesy and boring. We were smoking and drinking wine, and all of a sudden we won this award. We weren't ready for it. I don't know what I said onstage, but it was short and sweet. I don't think there were too many "fu**s" in it. Then we went backstage. I met Lenny Kravitz, which was cool, but Prince blew us off. He and his entourage just ignored us when we walked by. He didn't say anything, and he probably didn't know who we were. I don't think we're what he'd call good company, and I really didn't care. He looked like a fag that night anyway. Afterward, we went back to our seats, and when the second award came, it was totally unexpected. I got up to the microphone and started to thank the people who helped us out over the years. I said "f***ing" again, and I knew it was live television, so I said, "Oops." But it just slipped out again and again and again. Once I started, that was it. It was just like using an adjective.

-Why did you get so bombed if you knew you might have to appear on live TV?
I wasn't really drunk. All I had was wine. I had, like, two glasses of wine during the show, and I wasn't that fu**ed up. That's just me -- really, you have to know how I am, especially when I'm in a crowd of people. All this attention is focused on you, and I get very shy. I don't know why, but I can't approach a public situation like that without loosening up. That night, I didn't wear my hat, I didn't have a guitar to hide behind, and I wasn't performing. You walk into one of these places, and you feel almost like you're being X-rayed. Besides, I sort of wanted us to be the fu**ups there, because everybody else was so polite and stiff and unnatural. We were trying to have a good time, and I think out of all the people there, we were the only ones who weren't putting on a facade.

I remember reading this when it first was published.

I laughed my arse off.

Sorry, but Slash made some stupid ass acceptance speech at an awards show (either that one or the one before) where he pretended to be all drunk and wasted (or at least he played it up for the camera if he was), and it was just really juvenile and unimpressive. It came across like watching a nerdy kid trying to look cool. lol

Anyways, I doubt Prince would have wanted to associated with the likeness of that lol.

I'm with you on that, he really needs to grow up and stop trying to act like a rebellious teenager. And saying someone looks like a fag is not cool, shame on you Slash.

Slash's autobiography makes for entertaining reading. He really did get heavily wasted on booze and smack too and many other drugs back on those days so it wouldn't surprise me if he was smashed. Guns/Slash were the first group i got into in a big way when i was really young so i have always loved him. You never know, Prince may have been havina nice chat with Lenny when Slash swaggered in wasted and gatecrashed his convo. You never know what happened, but what i find childish and immmature are the folks on here who think "Princey" was right to snub him and not be associated with the likes of him, wtf??-get a grip folks

oh jog on, the spacka said he walked by, indicating he walked past? that's hardly initiating a convo. what happened was he saw prince's pretty face looking like he got a really bad shitty smell under his nose. truth be told slash was too scared, his plan to talk to princey went tits up and retaliated by calling princey a fag.

This moron admits that Prince might not even have known who he was (in which case why would he talk to him?) - and then proceeds to call him a fag?

He sounds totally snub-worthy, to me.

He's such an idiot and his comments show that he is actually the only fag around. Trying so hard to be cool... lawd rolleyes

Apart from that, he's also a very over-rated guitar player.

Slash. I remember meeting him in the 80's...In fact we were talking outside the hall when a girl wanted him to sign her white leather skirt so she bent over. I think we are a week apart in age. I remember treating him like my little brother. I made a "Slash," guitar pick earring back then...I wore it a couple of times..I lost that one. I have another one of his picks in a frame...I have "Duff's," too, and a pair of Steven Adler's stix. I saw Axle and Izzy but I never talked to those guys....Me and Steven hit it off as friends. I ended up being around a few times. I also went with my friend Bobby, and drove "Dokken,'s" bus from L.A. to Seattle-San Fran. in 88' (They wanted to fly.) cool They opened for Aerosmith. who replaced "Guns-n-Roses," on the tour.

I noticed party animal in everybody...They were all the nicest group of guys.
Very nice people. I'm sure Slash was just flying off at the toungue and has nothing against Prince. cool

For what it's worth, Slash was part of the best rock n roll band on the planet that night. Young, wild and super hungry.

Prince, on the other hand, was onstage thanking Anita Baker. neutral

um yeah Slash is now married with 2 gorgeous boys, completely sober and quit smoking recently due to his mother's death of breast cancer. I think he's shaped up quite nicely for all he's been through. This is a man who really dealt with some demons.

anyone got a picture of P during these awards? i'm curious to see what exactly triggered the insult

Some people might have called me that, but no...I wore jeans and T-shirts at concerts most of the time. I washed crew laundry for 4 summer's....We saw everybody back in the day...

My girlfriend and I would go to the hall in the morning...Ask the guys who needed laundry done. We'd take it...We got paid $20 a load...Ate Dinner with the crew, and got "Working Back Stage," passes for the day. The local union knew us also. I also worked for Michael Belkin for a summer.

I always wanted to write a book about it, but I never did. Because when I was having a blast in my life, I didn't keep a diary. cool

For the sake of mentioning how stereotypical a girl groupie was in the 80's...
My girlfriend and I were not. I didn't want to wear that jacket. I was able to put away Hank Williams Jr. drums one night...because of keeping cool...amongst so many other little helper jobs...I had to get a trumpet one night. I pushed the button that opened the curtain for "Baryshnikov." That was a thrill. cool

I'm not gonna say some sexy things didn't happen because they did...but they were few and far between, and they were based on real feelings.

When 8'o'clock in the morning would turn into 2:30am, and our friends were getting on the bus to go to the next town...It was always sad because we had all poured out our life stories. My girlfriend and I would talk about how meaningful our friends were in such a short amount of time because the minutes and the work were precious. It was nice to see some of our same roadie friends year after year. Many of times, our roadie friends would return to town with other bands.
It was nice to meet people from all over the world. And Love them.

When I hear the song, "The boys are back in town." I cry sometimes...because I miss a "band of united brothers," with the industry. I often wonder if they know how much they mean to me.

Get a "Roadie Song," by Aaron Neville is underrated....With out them, there ain't gonna be no show! cool

Slash is okay and worked great in the concept of Guns and Roses but I wouldn't call him legendary and he certainly wasn't redefining. But that's just my opinion.

The combination of soul & blues with shredder metal scales and licks was something nobody hit the nail on the head up until Slash made the perfect marriage.
Though subtle to someone whose not aquainted with the evolution of rock n roll theory/guitarrists, I -& pretty much any guitarrist (w/ the exception of Prince)- would say his playing was totally defying the cliche.

& aside from his staple image, his work in Appetite for Destruction is as legendary as it gets.

We've heard numerous stories like this lol Celebs complaining that Prince "snubbed" them.I recall one story about Prince at the American Music Awards and having his bodyguards advise other celebs NOT to talk to him.

In a way,it's kinda funny lol but I could see how people would get pissed about it.
