you're right, but that's why he and GnR were great back then (before Use Your Illusion, anyway). They were from the gutter and they did tons of drugs and they made real rock n roll!

Not very long before this Prince was labeling people himself, you know. I'm sure the hippies are still smarting from all the abuse he heaped on them. "Take a bath, hippie!" Words hurt, sometimes.

Anyway, I stopped liking Prince right around the time he wanted to elevate himself from gutter trash. Bikini briefs on bare bed springs ain't exactly a classy image, you know. But it was pretty rock n roll. nod

You hit the nail on the head there. Guns and Slash did freely admitted to being trash, as penned on alot of appetite's songs. That album is remarkable and always will be. And the guitar playing captured perfectly on it. They have never been able to get the exact sound since. Its an example of how ridiculously PC the world is getting when terms like "fag" cannot be taken in a light hearted manner(which im sure was intended)

He could have just called him a poofter, but it wouldn't be very Rock n Roll.

It's amazing how certain Prince fans can get wound up by that when Prince himself hasn't been shy about being derogatory to no end of folks in recent years, but he gets a pass. neutral

Oh, I've never put up with that word and when I hear it, I want revenge. I realize that not everyone is lucky enough or has enough good taste to be gay, but there's no need for the use of such words. We all can't be gay. Somebody has to be straight. There's no need for jealousy and bitterness though because someone isn't lucky enough to be born gay. He should have just called him an asshole, that would have been better.

Except that it wasn't Slash that wrote those lyrics to One In A Million. It was Axl Rose (who also use the 6 letter n-word in the same song, something that bother Slash for many years due to fact that his mother is black).

Axl is the real piece of trash in that episode.

Just came across the article, firgured it'd be neat to read the whole tidbit.

-Speaking of booze, let's go back to this time last year and the American Music Awards. You gained national headlines when you nonchalantly said "f**k" on live television. What exactly happened that night?

The fu**ing music awards . . . What happened was I got this phone call the day of the show asking if I wanted to go. We were nominated for two awards, and someone from the band needed to accept if we won. So me and Duff and our girlfriends all got drunk and flipped on down there after a stop at Carl Jrs. When we arrived, it was mass confusion, the whole paparazzi thing. I really didn't give a shit; I just wanted to hang out and have a good time. Anyway, we had third-row seats, and the show was real cheesy and boring. We were smoking and drinking wine, and all of a sudden we won this award. We weren't ready for it. I don't know what I said onstage, but it was short and sweet. I don't think there were too many "fu**s" in it. Then we went backstage. I met Lenny Kravitz, which was cool, but Prince blew us off. He and his entourage just ignored us when we walked by. He didn't say anything, and he probably didn't know who we were. I don't think we're what he'd call good company, and I really didn't care. He looked like a fag that night anyway. Afterward, we went back to our seats, and when the second award came, it was totally unexpected. I got up to the microphone and started to thank the people who helped us out over the years. I said "f***ing" again, and I knew it was live television, so I said, "Oops." But it just slipped out again and again and again. Once I started, that was it. It was just like using an adjective.

-Why did you get so bombed if you knew you might have to appear on live TV?
I wasn't really drunk. All I had was wine. I had, like, two glasses of wine during the show, and I wasn't that fu**ed up. That's just me -- really, you have to know how I am, especially when I'm in a crowd of people. All this attention is focused on you, and I get very shy. I don't know why, but I can't approach a public situation like that without loosening up. That night, I didn't wear my hat, I didn't have a guitar to hide behind, and I wasn't performing. You walk into one of these places, and you feel almost like you're being X-rayed. Besides, I sort of wanted us to be the fu**ups there, because everybody else was so polite and stiff and unnatural. We were trying to have a good time, and I think out of all the people there, we were the only ones who weren't putting on a facade.

Slash is not the first great guitarist that Prince has snubbed at an award show. I remember back in '85 or so Stevie Ray Vaughn said he was sitting behind Prince at an awards show and tried talking to him and Prince completely ignored him. SRV was pissed and said something like "They say his name is Prince but he acts more like the Queen bee." SRV was not happy. Prince is socially weird.

Besides Quincy Jones, I don't recalled Prince talking to any other artist at the 1985 AMA. Not taking anything away from Stevue Ray Vaughn, but wasn't Prince practicing a "code of silence" protest against the news media at the time?

Slash was at 3121 in Vegas one night at the bar with his drummer watching Prince wale on his guitar solo. They were doing shots and bobbing their heads to Prince's technique on the guitar that night. Like they were digging it. Wasn't there are tale about this happening?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe it was Michael who went out of his way to call Slash kindly asking for a collaboration.
Prince, however, didn't even care to acknowledged him- just out of respect and curteousy .
Make-up has nothing to do with this matter, it's just simple artist comradery
---
& if P did the same to SRV, then Slash really ought to not feel bad haha.

Unlike Prince or Eddie Hazel, as with Dirty Mind and Controversy, when Prince played a "combination of soul & blues" coordinated with a Punk sensibility??? I was raised in Clarksdale, Mississippi, (Home of the Blues) and was raised seeing B. B. King and many other great guitarists for free on a regular basis. Slash is a wonderful guitarist, but let's not diss Prince to elevate Slash. Slash's playing did not change the sound of music. However, Prince (his whole concept of music not just his guitar playing) has influenced many more musicians than Slash. That doesn't make Slash any less talented or skilled, but Slash did not change the face or sound of music.

Unfortunately talent and class do not come in the same package. While Slash does possess incredible talent on the guitar, he certainly lacks a bit of class, particularly in this case. Prince, on the other hand, has always shown class. He may be a bit guarded at times, but given the history of those around him, that's understandable. This was less of a snub and more of just a smart choice on Prince's part.

He's obviously a fan,and this is a great example of why sometimes its not great meeting your heroes.

I only partially agree with you - yes, Slash had an impact on rock'n'roll, certainly influenced kids to pick up a guitar and is an extremely capable guitarist.....certainly up there with the best of them.

But, as to "dominating" P exclusively on guitar, well, no. Sure, in the metal and shredding department, he's got Prince licked. There are a number of guitarists who, in a particular style have got P beat, but there are very few who have the stylistic diversity and deftness of touch and tone that P has - his playing is as emotive as any guitarist you'll ever here. And because of his ability to play a whole range of instruments, P understands better than anyone on how to fit them all together with sympathetic arrangements and harmonies.

But, really, who the fuck cares?! I mean, although I believe the above statements to be true, its never something I've analysed before - I enjoy both artists and have never thought to compare the two. I don't listen to somebody's music and think to myself "Hmmm, I wonder if (insert artist name) could play that/play it better?" - it just seems ludicrous.

Who is "better" is not at all relevant - the bodies of work and enjoyment that they have both provided most certainly is

Something is incorrect about this story.

I remember an interview with Axl Rose talking about him and Prince having a conversation and they clicked a lot. They talked about how being 28 was such a difficult age, Prince himself told him that he was having problems himself at 28.
If this supposedly snubbing was in 1990, Axl would have been exactly 28 years old and Prince 32 so I think Prince was very aware of who Guns and Roses were. Prince was probably being nervous or not interested in socializing at that moment and later on caught up with Axl.
Axl has also been singing some time ago at a party where Prince was (and Penelope Cruz), wasn't it at Prince's house? I'm not sure but they were all together.

Without getting too deep on the issue, i think you need to chill out a bit. It wasn't in my opinion the best choice of words, granted. But get a grip dude, worst things have been stated from the mouths of rock n roll stars. If you choose to take major offense to it, thats your call. I remember seeing a Slash/Duff interview when the question was asked "if you could be a fly on the wall of a certain era, what would you like to witness(or somethin along those lines) and im pretty sure they both agreed on seeing Prince 1980's outtakes.
