that's a clip from the AMAs, a Dick Clark production, as I recall. It's a speech, not a performance.

He broadened the mind of rock n roll was what he did, & not many are gifted to even make a dent.
Based solely on guitarrist capabilities, Slash dominates P. Heck he's responsible for inspiration that led millions of kids from past and present to pick up guitars.
But as a whole rounded artist, Prince obviously has an edge.

I only partially agree with you - yes, Slash had an impact on rock'n'roll, certainly influenced kids to pick up a guitar and is an extremely capable guitarist.....certainly up there with the best of them.

But, as to "dominating" P exclusively on guitar, well, no. Sure, in the metal and shredding department, he's got Prince licked. There are a number of guitarists who, in a particular style have got P beat, but there are very few who have the stylistic diversity and deftness of touch and tone that P has - his playing is as emotive as any guitarist you'll ever here. And because of his ability to play a whole range of instruments, P understands better than anyone on how to fit them all together with sympathetic arrangements and harmonies.

But, really, who the fuck cares?! I mean, although I believe the above statements to be true, its never something I've analysed before - I enjoy both artists and have never thought to compare the two. I don't listen to somebody's music and think to myself "Hmmm, I wonder if (insert artist name) could play that/play it better?" - it just seems ludicrous.

Who is "better" is not at all relevant - the bodies of work and enjoyment that they have both provided most certainly is
smile

Yeah comparing (esp these two) is a quite ludacris thing to do, but before this comes to an end I can't let you think Slash does not play with ever ounce of his heart's dripping emotion. Blues completely overrides the intracate phygarian/aeolian/dorian scales during his solos and riffs.
I mean from his reindition of Knockin on Heaven's Door, to Don't Cry.. Heck the two solos in Estranged are possibly the most heartfelt guitar solos ever recorded in history.
Though his statue is large (hair and tophat included), it's his difibrillator implanted heart that's larger than life wink

&From performing with Ray Charles to Chic to Michael Jackson to goodness, nearly every act out there.. I can't think of a style out there he hasn't nailed- probably just as much as Prince. These two are very stylistically different indeed.
---

During Tv performances sometimes, just sometimes, I can't help but think when P unhinges his jaw and creates that huge O face while hitting a high note on guitar admist a generic flange, it's just show. neutral God knows I love his playing...

No. Sweet Child O' Mine is brilliant of course, but his overall work is way too repetitive and "simple" for a professional guitar player to be looked upon by me. He seems to be stuck with the one-dimensional structures of 80's and 90's hard rock and just can't take it up another level. Fair enough, you could say that he is simply a rock'n'roll guitarist and not a poser-prog-rocker, but this is exactly what is bothering me about rock music. Those "musicians" surround themselves with prejudices they can feel safe in, because, no matter what they do, it will be what a "rocker" does. Slash is the perfect example. He is dumb and very one-dimensional in his music, but fuck it! Rock'n'roll, man! neutral

HQ always felt empty to me when I went there. Like I would visit and I was see tumbleweeds rolling by and dust flying n shit. Except for that one time when the org was down for about a week and then org-peeps was freaking out so they all went to HQ, it was pretty fun then and I felt more welcomed. lol

Unfortunately one of Prince's worst problems, is he so far up himself, if he was any more so, he would be inside out. Slash probably was snubbed by Prince and hes not the first or last artist to have been so. For the record, liked GNR and I think Slash is one of the best guitar players around, him and Duff were the talent in that band, not Axl. Amazing how crap GNR sound without Slash and Duff in it. I have Appetite for Destruction on my Ipod, and listen to it a lot. I know too many of the songs are about drinking and drugs, Mr Brownstone is about heroin, Night Train about that horrendous cheap wino wine, and They're out to get me sounds like a drug bust or a bad trip. But then you have Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City and Sweet Child of Mine, some of the greatest rock songs ever written. That first album was their best. Use your Illusion was self indulgent in comparison.
Kudos for Slash mentioning it.
So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

Slash can do what he wants he was the main figure GNR's and is a hero of mine.

But I dont think Prince snubbed him like that, he knew exactly who he was. Prince is not stupid how can u not miss Slash coming towards u? i think Prince probably saw this drunk person and thought oh sweet jesus and avoided him like the plague. Slash saw it as a diss but really when ur high on weed and alcohol it can make u paranoid even after uve sobered up. so i think Slash just got the wrong end of the stick.

Are we talking about an artist who was in a group that peaked with what two albums and his opinion of prince? really? lol. Well in that case Milli Vanilli had beef too, they were following him in a bathroom and homeboy didnt flush! just left his business there and it was the only urinal free!. Slash is human, and from my view a bit high strung lol, Prince is also human and well kinda arrogant and socially weird. i totally believe it went down, but we live in a results oriented society- Slash really should contain his venom for shall we say "less accomplished" peers.

I was on Youtube not to long ago and watched Prince's guitar solo for "While my guitar gently weeps"when he was inducted into the RRHOF for the first time. I went back to his part about twenty times it was that good!!!! I didn't think the sexy midget could shred. As for Slash, he has no room to talk because I heard his guitar playing and frankly I am not all that impressed. He actually put me to sleep. I rather watch Eddie Van take a shit then smoke a cigarette than waste my precious time watching the douche pretend at playing the guitar.Leave that to the big boys like Jimmy Page,Eric Clapton,Van Halen,Jimi Hendrix,Prince,Steve Vai, and so forth. I know Princey acts like a egotistical ass wipe sometimes but he has more talent in his pinky finger than slash has in his whole body. mad
