P at RNR HOF - performance

Just saw P's performance of "When My Guitar Gently Weeps" at the RNR HOF and I'm curious if anyone can tell who P is responding to as he plays? By far, he outclassed any of the peeps up there.

Find a promoter who would put a "guitar-off" on pay per view, and P would be a 2-1 favorite to kick any ass put up against him. Eddie Van Who? P's tha man!!!

Not that great as people tend to say..that solo was overrated (but still his performance is pretty cool!). Btw Eddie would kick Prince's ass on the guitar.. boxed

but prince can conect with the crowd and sell his performance better.
i don't think eddie can draw tears from his on lookers as P does.

That's right, Eddie is more a "guitar wanker" who plays excellent and fast, but he (same goes for Satriani) doesn't know when to stop, so his audience is bored. Prince's performance was badass, but from the guitarist's point of view it was nothing extra (but as we all know: simple = better wink).

what...? overrated...? omfg

that song is a classic and Prince did justice to the solo love2

a brilliant, very "touching moment", imo. wink

btw.. a lot of business and celebrity people there - I'm sure a lot of them were amazed by Prince's guitar skills.

I agree with a lot of this. It wasn't that the solo was revolutionary. It was very text book in a lot of ways. I think it was that he was there doing it, and it was also the chords in the song. It's not a typical rock song, and the chords and the arrangement are what make it unique. It's not just a 3 chords & the truth type of thing. "When Doves Cry" - the melody isn't that exciting or new. It's not anything we've not heard before, but rather it's the lack of bass, the percussion, the spartan nature of it that makes it memorable and unique. Same with the RNRHOF performance. It's ALL the elements that made it interesting, not just Prince's solo.

Twenty years ago, EVH would have dusted Prince. But today, Prince would leave EVH way behind.

IIRC he did it on an open string, nothing difficult..I mean stuff like Eruption, where you have to tap fast all over the neck. It would be interesting to hear Prince's take on that solo.. nod

tapping is quintisential 80's.....but i bet prince could get his fingers to tap...but not like eddie, never heard any one tap like that man.....

but there is a part RNR HOF performance where tom is staring at prince shaking his head looking amazed at princes guitar playing...

Prince might not be the best technicaly but IMO...he is the most emotional player in the public eye....

i agree.... now a days prince could dust evh on da frets...

From all the todays guitar players out there he is my fav. Yeah, Stevie Vai or Malmsteen could play faster and with better technique, but Prince has "something". It's just pleasure to hear him on the guitar music

The difference between Prince and those other guitar players is emotion.

Those guys are great technically, but they're pretty much just robots.

When you listen to the solo from Purple Rain. It makes you feel something.

Malmsteen's Blue has some feeling and emotion into it, but that's pretty much it.

basically prince guitar "has something to say" vs the other guys just "ramble on and say nothing".

I have to co-sign on this one...however, I'm not a musician...BGZ is a wonderful guitarist...I wonder how he would rate Prince's performance....

What's great about Prince's Hall Of Fame solo is that he never heard While My Guitar Gently Weeps before stepping on stage that night. Yeah. He's that awesome.

I've heard that Lil Wayne was behind the stage and played that solo himself just with his cock, Prince's guitar wasn't even plugged in.

First of all, music is not a sport, and I prefer feeling over tecnique. Prince is a good guitarist, but not that great. That solo is ok but overhyped. He's much better at funk guitar than rock guitar.
So plezzzzz stop the crap. There are zillions of better guitarists out there today. Even most session players will kick his ass every day of the week, I'm sure of that. Hell, even Dez Dickerson was way better at soloing.
But it's not showing his guitar chops what I am looking for in Prince music, he doesn't need that to be great.

didn't realize we had a resident "EXPERT" in tha house!! I guess we should all just order your CD for the holidays, and listen to how it's done, right?

How can we stop the crap, without having your password to edit your brilliant posts? That's about the only CRAP that I see up in here. Go away Mr. Professional.

??? sorry I don't know what are you talking about...expert?? I'm not even a guitarist if you suggest that.
I just say that solo is overhyped when there are tons of better things Prince has done. It was too long and a bit boring. I didn't like some of his antics neither, that was not the right moment.
But, if someone discovers the good Prince stuff thanks to that performance, that's ok of course.
