what song/ album made you fall in love with Prince's music??

Hey everyone,

I'm new to the org...i've been checking it out for some time, but this is the first time I've actually chimed in.

I'm just curious to see what song/ album made you fall for Prince's music? I was born in the wrong decade, so I had to listen to most of Prince's music after the fact. razz To make a long story short, I didn't begin to fully appreciate his royal purpleness until a couple of years ago.

That being said, the song that truly got me and never let me go was "Purple Rain." I don't know if it was the haunting sound of the guitar, the infamous "whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo" at the end, or just the magic of the song itself, but I first heard it when i was REALLY young and eventually downloaded it. From there, I discovered how amazing his music was and now i'm in love with MOST of his music (my songs of the moment are "Sometimes it Snows in April," "Question of U," "Man O' War," "Anotherloverholenyohead," and "I can't make you love me.")

How about you? lol

Hi and welcome ( I'm pretty new here too) smile

When I saw "purple rain" as a youngster I found him a bit creepy, so purple rain was not the song/album....I can't really say what the actual song was but it was around "Parade" album (I got bored with my former idols and sneaked in my brother's room to get some of them "creepy Prince" albums...I was innocent wink and then got stuck to him...forever)!!!

Purple Rain the song

can't believe at the age of 11 I was even able to appreciate such a piece, it touches everyone

Soft & Wet immediately got my attention. I fell in love with his version of I Feel For You, but when 1999 the album came out Prince was a music god to me.

Purple Rain made me look for all the previous releases but 1999 cinched it for me. Automatic was the track that had me on lock!

Good thread.

Though I owned and loved Dirty Mind and Controversy and was familiar with For You and Prince by default (my girlfriend had those two), what cemented my hardcore obsession with Purple Music was hearing Little Red Corvette. This song hit the 1980s musical landscape out of nowhere. I was blown away by it's insanely beautiful build up, scratchy percussion, sexual machinery lyrical images, in-the-red vocals and unforgettable guitar solo.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

For a while, I didn't have the whole 1999 album. I recorded it off my aunt....onto an 8-track tape. Her stereo had an 8-track recording option on it. Yes, I'm talking about a regular 8-track tape.

I only got 1999, LRC, Delirious, Let's Pretend We're Married, DMSR on it. For anyone that's listened to an 8-track and knows how it works, you know there's a metal piece of tape that triggered the "program" of the tape from 1 to 2 to 3 to 4. (the tape was effectively divided into four "rows". The head of the player would move up or down to play a different row of audio, called a "program". For YEARS, "little red corvette" and "DMSR" had "hiccups" in the song because it recorded over the metal piece. It took me ages to NOT expect that dip in the sound when I finally had the CD.

To the young people this makes no sense.....to the ones over 35, it totally does.

PS I recorded over a Tony Orlando and Dawn 8-track. LOL

Ultimately it took me a while to get used to a 1999 album past those 5 songs, so it took me a while to have "Automatic", "All The Critics", etc grow on me.

Mouse

When I was a kid just about the only place I could watch music videos was on an after-school show called Video Hits, a half-hour program hosted by Samantha Fox (not the British 'singer') - we didn't even have MuchMusic in those days. I remember a lot of videos that I used to dig on that show - Wild Boys by Duran Duran, Take On Me by A-ha, stuff like that - but the one that really crushed my brain was Let's Go Crazy, which was on enormously heavy rotation for a while. I used to run - sprint, actually - home from school in order to be on time to see it. Prince was, at that time, the weirdest, most mysterious, funkiest and all-around coolest cat I'd ever fucking seen. Then I got the album & I was hooked, heavy as lead. I've dug plenty of his stuff since, & a lot of it more than the Purple Rain album, but there's something powerful & endlessly groovy about the first time, when it comes to music anyway. When he played Let's Go Crazy at the Musicology show I went to in Toronto 20 years after those Video Hits days my skull imploded. Fucking magic.

ok so when the song 1999 started to catch on to radio & MTV
around 83 I was 11 years old & I really liked it. I also remember
hearing Delirious on the radio around this time, but I thought it
was Eddie Murphy because he had that album out that the time called
Delirious giggle - i was 11 alright? lol

When Purple Rain was huge I was only 12 and missing out on it all.
I liked certain singles (WDC, LGC) but didn't like others (PR, IWD4U).
i was definitely aware of Prince's presence. People were talking about Prince.
When Raspberry Beret came out I had just turned 13 and I guess the time was right
lol
MTV showed that video on the top of every hour for 2 days strait
and i just thought that was pretty much the coolest shit I had ever seen.
Prince was cool. i was hooked. I bought the Raspberry Beret single
(with the awesome She's Always In My Hair on the b-side) and then
Around The World In A Day album and that was it, I would get every
single and album on or right near the day of release ever since!
So for me, the short answer would be:

Raspberry Beret/Around The World In A Day
Spring 1985
13 Years Old.

As an afterthought- A couple of things that made me really think that
Prince was Completely And Totally Amazing (besides Tamborine & Temptation)
was the 12" of America (21 Min long ver pretty much blew me away),
the Prince & The Revolution Live video (released in 85) and then
the next year after the Parade 12 inches and UTCM live performance
boroadcast on MTV -forget it there was no turning back for me!
Prince was IT! nuts
biggrin

It would have to be "When doves cry."

The introduction was electrifying. I loved the reference to parents and the video was freaky. A half naked man, or was he naked (?) crawling across a bathroom floor.

Let's go crazy, take me with you and baby I'm a star, sealed the deal.
