Liked Prince since I first heard the opening of Lets Go Crazy but, if you want an album song that changed everything for me it's Diamonds & Pearls and, in particular, Gett Off. The reason why is below ( it's an edit of what be posted it before - sorry):

I went to an all boys school where, On the second day, somebody started a false rumour I was gay....which is the worst thing to be at an all boys school. For 3 years I was a social leper who got beat up on a regular basis both in and out of school...all because if a stupid little false rumour which started on the 2nd day of school (as if starting secondary school wasn't hard enough).

In the 3rd year a new guy started school. This guy made an amazing choice, because we discovered we both liked Prince and Gett Offwas out at the time, he 'chose' to side with me instead of taking the easy route and being friends with the 'hard' kids. From there he became the best friend I have ever known, we were inseparable, got into so many scrapes, laughed, cried and all the while he took shit for knowing me.

We went our seperate ways for what seemed like good about 10 years ago when he but may actually be meeting up again soon after slot of water under a lit of bridges.

Without Gett Off who knows where or IF I would be - after 3 years of daily beatings I was having some VERY dark and final thoughts.

So here's to BRJ

Great story smile Nothing can replace true friends like that. mushy I had a friend that people used to laugh at because she was 'different' she danced in a crazy way too, so I always made a point of going up and dancing WITH her, because I thought "F**k you all, at least she's got the guts to be herself!" Not nearly on such a large scale as your story.. it takes courage to stand up for the 'different' one but the rest are just total cowards....so glad you got through that dark period with his, and Prince's wink help and support!

I wasn't different...that's the point. It's ludicrous now but we had a stationary cupboard at school that had a trench infrint of it where 3 or 4 steps led down to it. It was nicknamed the Gay Pit and if you went in utbyou were gay ( of course!!!) I got pushed in on my 2nd day, people joked it meant I was gay, it carried on, new starters start, they hearbit withoutbtje pit story, they tell friends and before you know it you're taking fire exits out of part time jobs because there are groups of people waiting out front for you.

Anyway that was....between 20 and 14 years ago. Kids eh

Mind U, I was an adolescent when this occurred...

My Brother received prince in the mail from BMG(which makes me laugh at Prince when he complains about 12 CD's for a dollar for I may never have gotten into him if it wasn't for this). Anyways, my Brother got prince in the mail from BMG when I was about 14-15...summin like that. I took a listen to it after he pushe dit on me. I knew he was around before then for sure, but never paid a WHOLE lot of attention cuz the whole high heel/eyeliner/perm image wasn't conducive in drawing my attention to him. I previously had the Batman soundtrack and that was cool and all...i really liked it, but again, high heels and eyeliner, NOT my thing. Anyways(for the second time) I was listening to prince and the Production on it was incredible to me. All the layers, sub-melodies, sonic timber was something that blew me away. Also I was trying to be an individual at the time and wasn't trying to subscribe to a conventional movement/scene at the tim, so the rap which wasn't all gangster or the opposite - dripping in social awareness, drew me in as well. It was different, out of the norm, socially unconventional. RIGHT up my alley. Then I heard these lyrics...mind u again...I WAS an adolescent in the throws of Puberty...

...3 quarters in a glass
I see U smile and and ask(I thought it was "smiling ass" instead of smile and ask)
If I flip em on my stomach
Will U marry my ass...

...I wanna kiss U
baby yeah I want your lips
I wanna kiss U like U know
like U know U wanna be kissed
ALL TONGUE, YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT
I WANT ALL YOUR GERMS
I CAN BE HECK-A-TEACHER
IF U WANNA LEARN
...

but mostly, the following lyrics lyrics "intrigued" me to NO END...

from "Melt With U"...

...Don't look now, but there's a river of blood
U musta been a virgin
what am I guilty of...

Damn near the whole album was dripping in Lust for a hot ass woman/girl who wasn't far from my age. Needless to say...I IDENTIFIED.

It's Gonna Be Lonely mushy

We've been 2gether 4 quite some time
I'd think by now U'd know
It'll take 4ever 2 get U off my mind
If ever U decide 2 go
I guess I got a little insecurity
When it's concerning U
I guess I'm just afraid that if U ever leave
I'd be in a messed-up state of blue

And I'd be so lonely
Without U loving me, I know it's gonna be lonely
Without U giving me every little single thing that I need
Lonely

Whatever's in your kiss, it really turns me on
Till I go right out of my mind
And who could ever resist your accent from gay Paree
It gets me every time
I betcha thatcha never knew that in my dreams
U are the star
The only bummer is that U always want 2 leave
Who do U think U are?

Don't U know it's gonna be lonely?
Without U loving me, I know it's gonna be lonely
Without U giving me every little single thing that I need
Lonely

It's gonna be lonely
Without U loving me, giving me everything that I need
Oh pretty baby, can't U see it's gonna be lonely?

Without U loving me
I know, I know it's gonna be lonely

Oh, whatever's in your kiss
I never could resist
Oh baby, don't go!

We've been 2gether 4 quite some time
It would take 4ever 2 get U off my mind
Oh girl!

Without U loving me
I know it's gonna be lonely

Without U by my side
Don't U know that I could die, baby?

Without U loving me
Can't U see it's gonna be lonely?

It's gonna be lonely, baby
So lonely, baby
I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

That song/albumdidnt get me I to Prince but it was about the 3rd of 4th of his I bought and the instant I heard it all the glam of Purple Rain, controversy etc that I'd previously heard were wiped away and revealed the real thing.

yeah...i'm replying with my own quote...lol

It seems that the more I think my post will get a direct response is the more it doesn't do exactly that. BUt when I think my post will go sight unseen, is when it gets quoted repeated. That's not to say I fashioned my response to get quoted, it's just something that always throws me for a tiny loop.

The Gold Experience. I was three when it came out and I remember listening to some songs off that album in my dad's car. Twelve years later, when I listened to the CD out of curiousity, that freaky chorus line in P Control, Endorphinmachine, Shhh, I Hate U and Gold all touched me so much I started to cry. It hit home so hard. And then it all started clicking together. That album was my childhood and that guy was kind of the same guy that I owned "The Greatest Hits" by.

From that moment on I didn't look back anymore.

The first song that really grabbed my attention was Diamonds and Pearls. I remember watching the music video for the first time on MTV a few years ago, and afterwards, I became interested in this dude I used to think of as "the gay one who is arrogant enough to call himself Prince".

For me, it started back in '06. I had seen a lot of him lately in places I didn't expect, so one day, I decided to check him out. I went to Best Buy to get a CD/DVD shelf, and had a few spare bucks. I found a CD called "Purple Rain" in his section for $10 and decided to check it out. It's all history from there...

I fell in love way back in 1982 I believe, I heard his music from 1999 and seen him dance on his video "Little Red Corvette" and I he got to me, hook, line and sinker LOL I loved his style, his funky sound, and his moveS not to mention his dark, handsome looks!!!! I knew he was going to be around for a while, he wasn't one of these flash in the pan or "one hit wonders" he had real talent and was a genious.
I went back and searched out some of his earlier music and bought it up! then "Purple Rain" was the icing on the cake! since then I have listening to his music and finally in 2004 I had seen him in concert for the first time at Penn State Bryce Jordan Center on his Musicology Tour and it is a night I will never forget, I wished I could have been in Vegas when he was there but my I just didnt have the dough.

Hey everyone,

I'm new to the org...i've been checking it out for some time, but this is the first time I've actually chimed in.

I'm just curious to see what song/ album made you fall for Prince's music? I was born in the wrong decade, so I had to listen to most of Prince's music after the fact. razz To make a long story short, I didn't begin to fully appreciate his royal purpleness until a couple of years ago.

That being said, the song that truly got me and never let me go was "Purple Rain." I don't know if it was the haunting sound of the guitar, the infamous "whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo" at the end, or just the magic of the song itself, but I first heard it when i was REALLY young and eventually downloaded it. From there, I discovered how amazing his music was and now i'm in love with MOST of his music (my songs of the moment are "Sometimes it Snows in April," "Question of U," "Man O' War," "Anotherloverholenyohead," and "I can't make you love me.")

How about you? lol

For a while, I didn't have the whole 1999 album. I recorded it off my aunt....onto an 8-track tape. Her stereo had an 8-track recording option on it. Yes, I'm talking about a regular 8-track tape.

I only got 1999, LRC, Delirious, Let's Pretend We're Married, DMSR on it. For anyone that's listened to an 8-track and knows how it works, you know there's a metal piece of tape that triggered the "program" of the tape from 1 to 2 to 3 to 4. (the tape was effectively divided into four "rows". The head of the player would move up or down to play a different row of audio, called a "program". For YEARS, "little red corvette" and "DMSR" had "hiccups" in the song because it recorded over the metal piece. It took me ages to NOT expect that dip in the sound when I finally had the CD.

To the young people this makes no sense.....to the ones over 35, it totally does.

PS I recorded over a Tony Orlando and Dawn 8-track. LOL

http://www.8trackheaven.com/work.html

Ultimately it took me a while to get used to a 1999 album past those 5 songs, so it took me a while to have "Automatic", "All The Critics", etc grow on me.

Well...my older brother had just bought Controversy on vinyl...this must've been 1981. And, as a 7 year old, I thought it was SOOOO cool that there was a song with my name in it...'Jack u Off'. So, I used to play this over and over and over, at full volume, having NO idea what the lyrics were about, much to my parent's chagrin. In fact, I remember many a Saturday afternoon with my mother banging on my door, imploring me to 'Turn that S*%T off'.
