I bought the 1999 vinyl album in a local record store - and I was amazed by EVERY track on this album, unfortunately I gave away this vinyl copy to a former girlfriend of mine, she has probably just thrown it away now long time ago,

damn I wish I had kept this copy to myself.

When Purple Rain came out in '84 I knew Prince was brilliant (he was back then) and I was made "a fan for life"

it was definitely the whole album purple rain. when i first saw that movie i was not a fan but i sure became 1 when i heard the music lets go crazy was my favorite song at the time

The Controversy tape sealed it for me- I knew the man was genius, funky & and sexy/passionate/confident individual w/ a style all his own... someone who would sing and play like I had never heard before! I was about 12-13? don't recall exactly, but I knew this man played what I wanted to hear and sang from/w true emotion & experience.

I was also born in the wrong decade but when I bought the Purple Rain album in 1998 at age 18 I got hooked. Hooked on the whole album, but especially When Doves Cry, The Beautiful Ones and Purple Rain. He managed to write one killer song after another, mixed different styles extremly well and wrote cool lyrics like on Let's Go Crazy and Darling Nikki. Then I started to listen through his other 80s albums in rapid succession. What a ride it was!

The song that hooked me was CREAM. People say that whole period was trend chasing, well it got me and many others into Prince.

Remember that on the Urban Cowboy soundtrack you had everything from Johnny Lee, Mickey Gilley, The Eagles, Bonnie Raitt, and more. The Eagles fit in with pop/rock as much as they did a country scene.

The K-Tel album is very coherent. The first side is more R&B and soul, and the second side is more pop music. I find it hard to believe you've never heard "Into The Night" from Benny Mardones, or "Take A Little Rhythm" from Ali Thompson. I would bet money if you heard the songs, you'd know them. I recreated the tracklist on iTunes so I can hear it wherever I go.

a friend at school gave me a tape with "sign o the times" and "parade" all mixed up, and I completely fell in love with "sometimes it snows in april" - still my favourite to this day!

Wow! This is a cool thread. Gushing aside, my reply:

Since I was born in '87, most of my experience with Prince and his music has resulted from my parents being fans. That being stated, I got hip to him in the 90s. In fact, that's probably the bulk of what I love about him. Even though eventually I came to love and appreciate all of his music, not equally becuase I'm pleased with being partial. LOL! The song that got me is probably Diamonds and Pearls. That was a great time in my childhood. I just remember everything being so wonderful. That track is forever associated with Christmas in my house. After The Hits/B-Sides was released my mom played it endlessly. I didn't fully understand why my parents liked Prince until I was sufficiently older. As much as I loved the way it sounded, I couldn't tell you much of what it was about. (Some things were obvious to say the least. Definitely sparked the flame in me.) I still can't say what too many of them are about those are the crazy ones lol. For the past few years I've been crafting my "collection" from what I heard as a kid. That's a lot of 90s, but I went back to the beginning.

I'm currently "employed" by a corporate owned record company. (That sentence was painful.) My favorite part of the job is meeting people and asking them about Prince. I annoy all of my coworkers with my level of interest. I practically sprint whenever he is mentioned. My curiosity is no doubt mixed with infatuation because I find him amazingly beautiful. I know I'm pretty much a rookie, and there are thousands of things I haven't learned, but everything I do know I'm extra pleased by. Just the other day my dad told me about how he went to see Sign O' the Times. He earns a million cool points everytime he shares something with me about that time in his life. That's all I have at the moment. The man is a genius, and the biggest influence as to why I write lyrics. I can only hope to have the same impact on another as he has had on me.

This is a hard question for me to answer. When 1999 came out, I was about 11 years old...so my appreciation/respect for artists was not as deep as they would eventually grow to become.

I remember seeing the videos for Little Red Corvette and 1999 on TV, which captured my attention; even then, though - at that young age, I was not too into Prince. I remember laughing every time I heard the chorus to "Delirious." It just sounded funny to me.

In 1984, I was 12 years old, and when Purple Rain the movie came out, I was not allowed to see it because of its R rating. But even then, I wouldn't say that I fell in love with Prince's music yet. Being famous and all as he was, I was aware of him and songs like "Let's Go Crazy" and even Purple Rain.

When "Kiss" came out in 86 (I think) I started to appreciate Prince more...by then I was 14. But I really started to dig Prince when Sign O The Times came out...as in appreciate him more as a musician/artist than some famous person. I remember studying SOTT...from the beginning through to the last song.

I would have so say it was SOTT that did it for me, and I've stuck w/ him ever since then.

My brother used to play Prince constantly when I was growing up, and he took me to Earls Court to see the Diamonds & Pearls tour when I was 16, and was absolutely amazed - my jaw spent the whole evening on the floor. It wasn't until then that I realised how fantastic a musician he was and I've never loooked back. The whole Diamonds & Pearls album always brings back memories of that time.

Musicology is what did it for me. I went to the store looking to buy a Kelly Clarkson album( I know, I'm embarrassed) It was sold out..I didn't wanna leave empty handed, so I looked around and found the Musicology album. I remember the single being really good...so I just bought the album and loved every song off it.


I was fasinated by Prince, so I went to Itunes and bought 1999 (the single, I loved it) I bought all his old albums till I was in debt...in a spending frenzy one night.

I knew I became a die hard fan when I stopped listening to nothing but prince 24/7. I got his entire catalogue (so I'd like to think) all his unreleased music and protegee music. I love everything he has made apart from the new power soul album. So yeah, Musicology was the clincher for me.

i cant quiet remember which song it was, it kinda just built up by wanting the hits it was 2004 and prince had just released musicology which i didnt know off at the time, and a coupla years b4, he'd released the very best of prince and i kept seeing it in hmv and places like that and my dad had just picked me up from school i was around 16 at the time and he had to go to good old woolworths for something, paper i think??? and he said do you want anything and i said yer i think theyve got princes greatest hits in woolworths on speacial offer and he said hed get it if they still had it, but when he came back he had got me musicology and that was when i got completely hooked, thanks dad =D

Like a lot of people it was When Doves Cry for me. To a mixed up boy from a mixed marriage, obsessed with sex and rapidly going gay - the whole package was perfect.
