I remember back to the CB fiasco, he wouldn't release it until he got 50,000 orders. then it came out in stores first. so if he struggled to sell 50k online then that would indicate - he has just under that amount who follow what he's up to on a regular basis (aka fans).

Judging by the number of members on this site it seems Prince has many fans but im wondering how many he has? how many actually support him by going to his concerts and buying the latest album? rather than sum who just illegally download it? is it in the millions?

Hang around here long enough and you'll start to believe you're the last one left!

Not sure who ernie is, but since you used my reply, I will use yours.

I was more addressing your lack of good English, sort of debunking what you said.

A. Fans | B. No Fans

If he "don't" have #B, that means he has #A. Dig up.

And I never said he doesn't have fans. He has me, half the time.

100,000 and then add 50,000, all of us who can't go to concerts in America and Europe and the ones who are closeted, but Ernest is probably pretty much on the money.

Do we have a minimum threshold of what constitutes a fan. To me this should, they know something of him outside of "I love Purple Rain" and own at least 5 original albums/CDs/ album downloads (Greatest Hits and general complimations with one Prince song are excluded). Also the mini fan should at least know his birthday and at least 10 useful things about Prince. They should have preferrably seen or own a copy of Purple Rain the Movie. Anyless its a casual or 'emergent' fan.

Good threshold perhaps
So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

Maybe U have a different definition of what a Fam is than I do. I thought it was someone who was in the Prince extended Family of Fans.

How does that even make sense? Extended family of fans? Does he have a closer set of fans, other than the women he fucks/marries/divorces/writes songs about? Does he have a little gaggle of fans that he keeps in his entourage or posse when he travels? He doesn't exactly have a bunch of Kato Kaelins running around with him, or living in a guest house. Fams are people who ass kiss him enough to stay out of legal wranglings with him, as well as having cease and desist orders served to them, or the threat thereof, and buy anything and everything he drops in their lap, including but not limited to subpar material, broken promises about promised services and product, racist/anti-semetic/homophobic material, all while those "fams" consider it gold.

And if you consider yourself some sort of family to Prince, no thanks. He's not treated half of his siblings well, rumored to not have even gone to his father's funeral (although I've never heard definite either way), and treats his fans like piles of crap.
I'll stick to being a fan.

Fans, fams fans....I wonder if fans in numbers are more important than quality fans. And if the quality of current fans would encourage one to be a fan or not. Also, is someone a fan if they ... as one orger so beautifully put it a while ago "logs in faithfully to shit on Prince daily." Quoted from this thread. http://prince.org/msg/7/3...mp=52&pg=2 Would that kind of fan encourage others to be a fan or not?

Now, in this thread http://prince.org/msg/7/320634?&pg=2 Ernest you said about your internet radio station, quote : "but I also played bootlegs. Eventually, Prince's folks caught wind of Uptown Radio, and eventually emailed me. I was doing a LOT of rotation with the Japan boots, and some SOTT show rehearsals. I also understood the cease and desist talk. I'm not mad at them for making me take down the boots that I was playing.I don't have unfinished business with Prince. I never hated Prince, and I don't hate him now. I just hate how he's done business, treated his fans, ripped us off, and how his music quality has suffered in the past 10 years compared to the whole rest of his career at WB." And finally you also said in that thread, quote: "I don't have a sour relationship w/ Prince. My angst w/ Prince lies in the things we've talked about ad nauseum on here, and elsewhere. So that's it. Nothing too exciting, and it wasn't nasty, or put some bad taste in my mouth about Prince, despite folks thinking that. "

On more than one occasion in my short time on the org I have seen folks complains about your comments which 1. either aim to pull those down that talk positively of Prince or 2. aim to take a jab at Prince. You claim to be a fan and to have no bitterness but you take a jab at every opportunity you get, including whether or not he attends his father's funeral. But you're not bitter right? You say Prince's work in recent years is "subpar material/ a rip off/racist/anti-semetic/homophobic," & yet although you were never at one O2 peformance, you "have them all?" You also claim that those who BUY anything he drops into their lap are "ass kissers." You say he treats his fans like "piles of crap,." yet in the same breath you say "I don't have a sour relationship with Prince ."

Is it me or does something not add up here?

Are we determining this by how many people buy his albums upon release these days? or how many folk attend his shows? If it's the former i'd say not many, and if it's the latter, well casual and even non-fans can get roped into going to concerts too.

21Nights was a great acheivement for an act who hasn't regularly bothered the radio listeners of the UK in more than a decade, though i would say his tix were only £31.21, which for an artist of the calibre of Prince is very cheap, also not forgetting the free album with the Newspaper. Clever. hence, over 400,000 attended.

The UK leg of the ONA tour in 2002 played to a total of about 20,000.

What is real?

I must point out The UK ONA gigs were sell out. A couple of shows in a relatively small venue. He could of done more if he wanted - may of needed more promo though. He did vertually zilch promo as it was.

But then he did zilch for the o2 aswell. didn't even let the press in! how cool is that! Bon Jovi were on The Breakfast Show (sic) this morning, drumming up some sales. hehe.

In my experience, those who are not "obsessive" about Prince, but are just "regular" fans don't come near sites like this one. I know at least 50 people here in the UK who are fans of Prince, buy his music, may go to shows but never post or visit a fan site for every one person that does. Its ridiculous to attempt to measure his fanbase (not to mention incredibly arrogant) by the membership of this one fan site, or even others.

Prince is also an internationally reknowned artist, yet a lot of the figures seemed to be naively based on the US and Europe - again, extremely short-sighted!

But the over-riding question is - why on earth would you care? Is it some sort of comfort for you that loads of other people like Prince? Do you relish in the fact that his sales are not what they were? The ONLY thing I feel is important is that there enough people buying his stuff so that he can continue doing it, THAT is all that should matter.
