A question about the metal things on Prince's coat Here's my basic question: What are they?
I mean, they were on all of his overcoats for a number of years in the early '80s. Did he glue or sew them on himself? Were they just another unique part of his overall look? I love them and think they look cool, so I'm just wondering if anyone knew the story of how they came about...

I always thought the studded coats were made, or enhanced rather, by his wardrobe people. Not Marie France etc though.

i love that essential quirk, wish P would rock that style again
all i know is that alot of people are jacking his style- for example Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and espcially Adam Lambert all have jackets featuring them. & boy are those things a pain to draw! I thought that too. But for some reason, I didn't think he had wardrobe people until Purple Rain. Truth be told, I've always been a little bit fascinated by the idea of his having wardrobe people. How many? Are they full-time employees at Paisley Park or does he have someone on retainer and just calls in with his ideas/suggestions/needs? I would think during, say, the Lovesexy era there were people working overtime to outfit Prince and his band members.

And I also I didn't think he had it going on like that in the Contorverys era to have his owm wardrobe people like Louis & Vaighn etc...BUT, since he was with WB, I think they did have a general wardrobe department as probably most artists touring did. If he did or not, I like to think it was his idea to add the studds though.

They are pyramid-shaped nailheads. They have prongs on the back - and you use a special setting tool to attach them to fabric.
If this coat was bought off the rack (which seems likely - Prince's wardrobe wouldn't have been custom made at that point), someone would have decided what pattern to place the studs in on the shoulder shield and punched them through. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Ahhh... the undefinable pleasure and sense of security I get from just knowing, as I scroll through, that the Mighty Genesia would clear it all up. I'm happy now. . That thing looks like it would hurt. Do you think a couple dudes had to hold Prince down during the process? If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.
