Modern music belongs to James Brown and his players...

This song is straight J.B....

All the screaming rockers = JB

That famous live Doors performance... when the guy puts the cape on the lead singer = JB.

That campy trippy 60's music that was recreated for the score of "Austin Powers" = JB.

Elvis and The Jordanaires = JB and The Famous Flames

Prince/ Morris + Jerome = JB and Bobby Byrd

Prince + The Game Boyz = JB and Bobby Byrd and the rest of The Famous Flames.

Hiphop would be dead without JB. his samples saved it when the rappers could not continue sounding like RUN DMC.

Without JB, everything would've sounded like 50s music.. Rocka-billy, Blues, Country, Blue Grass, Motown and Doo-Wop.

I have to agree with Laura here(minus the verbal attacks) lol

While the 2 songs are oddly similar, I think the "catch phrases" and the bassline are somewhat of a folklore as opposed to a direct case of plagiarism,,,,again thanks to JB.

I have to admit though, I've never heard of this song, Helene Miller or Frank Williams & The Rocketeers before this thread,,,,,thank you for the knowledge music

hmm And what exactly is "black culture"?
And so what if people lack knowledge of RnB music? That's their prerogative.

At the end of the day it's just an online forum. Seriously.

Well No Video started with me being an ass with some snarky comment about my grammer. In addtion, in the entire thread one person mentioned “Papa Got A Brand New Bag” and I know the average person does not listen to “KISS” and think this song sounds like that Helene Smith song most people think of JB.

I don’t think I am wrong for pointing out that only one person on this topic seemed to acknowledge the JB refernce.

I simply do not agree the vocal phrasing is the same and while the lyrics are similar they are not the same lyrics and therefore not plagerisim. If you think it is plagerisim than every time someone uses the million colloquialisms that are used in the black community because if that is the case than I guess everybody is plagerizing all the time in RnB music.

How many times have we heard the following phrases used.

Pick Up on this.
Don’t Get it twisted.
Word to the Mother

I could go on with this all day. It is not plagerism but the ignorance I lot of people on this board who have not one fucking clue when it comes to R nB music and black culture which you and I have talked about before.

Laura, understand me now, I'm NOT picking sides for I don't know No Video from Adam but I don't think anbody on here, least of all No Video, is denying the Papa's Got A Brand New Thing influence on the song Kiss. Nor is anyone denying that this song wasn't influenced by James Brown. All No Video was saying is that Kiss sounds a lot like THIS song as well. In James's "Papa's Got", there are no "You don't have to be this" or "You don't have to be that" in the lyrics. It's mainly THERE where P's song Kiss comes to mind in connection to THIS song. Because not only the lyrical theme are damn near identical to Kiss but also the vocal phrasing. Just from that alone is enough to see that P obviously not only had THIS song but he took from it for his song Kiss. No doubt, the heavy JB influence on this is probably what drew P to it in the first place. But there is no denying that he took not only the lyrical content but also the lyrical phrasing from THIS song. That's evident in listening to both songs. Anybody could notice that right away.
[Edited 8/26/09 15:07pm]

I know laura...I don't think there is a case for plagerism either. I never even mentioned "plagerism". It's obviously a song that P was more than a little aware of though, I think. P's knowledge in music is VAST. Many people on here mistaken this fact about Prince a lot. ESPECIALLY when dealing with white rock artists. Sometimes people have the tendency to think that P wasn't aware of certain rock white artists for an example. P has always made it his buisness to know about all genres. My feeling about Prince, especially during Dirty Mind through Purple Rain, P would roam the halls of music, from reggae to new wave. It didn't matter. ANYTHING P heard that he liked, he was going to find a way to utilize into his sound. And I think the more obscure P thought the track or artist was, the better. Because then of course, it gave the fans the illusion that P was this totally original artist that just was pulling tricks out of thin air. Although I was a kid, I KNEW better because I grew up listening to all kinds of shit and for the most part, I was always able to spot where P got something from. THAT'S one of the main reasons I dug P so much. Because I could spot all the different artists P was jacking shit from but it was the way he could blend and mold it all together. So again, there is no doubt that P was certainly aware of this track. He dug it, took from it and did his thing with it on Kiss. That's what I think. No harm done, nobody has to go to jail. wink

This song = "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag", or "Out of Sight"..

Count Basie and Southern Black Gospel and Blues inspired James Brown and his players.

George Clinton and Parlelment were a "Doo Wop" group in the 60's before he hired James Brown's musicians (and/or JB inspired musicians).

JB created "Funk" music. He was already called "The GodFather of Soul" by then..

Prince (and others of the time grew-up with James, then Parliament).

I really don't hear Sly much in Prince's music.. Sly was more about the style, look, intent of the lyrics, and diversity of The Family Stone.

Prince was less "JB-like" early in his career:

e was more Little Richard, Mick Jagger, Bowie, New Wave, Disco, Hendrix, Chaka and Rufus, and Mother's Finest (Dez Deckerson reminds me of a member of Mother's Finest).

Sexy Dancer = (I can hear influence of Disco Nights (Rock Freak) by G.Q.)

Uptown = "Miss You" by The Rolling Stones

Why You Want To Treat Me So Bad? = Mother's Finest/ Rufus.

Then..

(Prince) Positivity/ Camille/ Spooky Electric = David Bowie/ Ziggy Stardust/Major Tom... ( Starchild/Sir Nose..

Dude you have added nothing to this topic at all. I answered all your bullshit line for line so perhaps you need to work on your reading comprehension skills.

The facts are a lot of people on this board show their ignorance about RnB music on a daily basis.
Most threads about RnB groups, singers and historical events have a small amount of views if any at all.

A lot of fans ignore that Prince started out as an RnB artist and if you look for “For You” back in the day it was in the RnB section. I worked in a record store and I don’t recall seeing a disco section.

P is black and did grow up in the black community so he just might have absorbed some “sayings and verbage from his community. “You do have to be rich “ is not some unique phrase that anyone owns the rights to and I am going to bet the bars and chords in this song are not enough to claim palagisim.

P has gone on record to say that he has a massive JB collection and you can hear it in his music today.
From my own record collection you can find thousands of artist who rode off of JB and this Helene chick was one of them. It stands to reason that JB was the main guy that P was following

Now if hoards of people on this board are aware that JB was influence than maybe they need to fucking act like they know and state that instead up bring up every obsurce CD from old RnB artist that they can find.

Now I am going to move on with my life as I just lost 20 minutes with you that I will never get back again.

I find it interesting that I get kicked off the org a lot because of things I say but yet, people like laurarichardson are left alone. And I have seen her do the same thing in other threads.

Was not my intention to cause anger when posting this clip. It was just something I found. I am also aware that there would be no Prince without JB, etc.

I am also aware that Prince knows a lot about music including Fishbone (who he sampled on Billy Jack Bitch) and Jimmy Eat World, etc.

Pepper7 I know how you feel. It seems nowadays there is either nothing left to discuss about Prince or that each time you try - you get attacked by a purple-kool-aid-drinker.

I don't know too much about Laura, but I've always viewed her to be a passionate commentator(which can be both good & bad).

God knows I'm guilty of the same thing,,,,,but its easier to give people the benefit of the doubt esp if they're willing to learn, afterall I didn't know about either of the song or the artists untill this thread.

People could be intelligent if you gave them a lil' room to show it. But thats me.
