Reflection: was it directed at someone?

The lyrics seem as if he's addressing someone. And not just a love in the vague sense of a generic love song, but someone real he's known for years, possibly even decades based on the "afro" line.

Thoughts?

2 sevens together
Like time, indefinite
Trying 2 catch the glass
b4 it falls
Without a frown
Can U turn up the stereo?
Eye wanna play U this old song about love (is it about love?)
Can Eye do that?

Did we remember 2 water the plants today?
Eye 4got 2 look up at the moon because
Eye was 2 busy, said Eye was 2 busy
Eye was 2 busy
Looking at you babe

Still it's nice 2 know
That, uh when bodies wear out
We can get another
What does that 1 thing have 2 do with the other 1?
Eye don't know
Eye was just thinking about my mother

U know what
Turn the stereo back down
Ain't nothing worse than an old worn out love song
Tell me do you like my hair this way
Remember all the way back in the day
When we would compare who's afro was the roundest

Mirrored tiles above the bed
Fishing nets and posters all over the wall
Oh yes, sometimes
Sometimes Eye just wanna go sit out on the stool
And uh... play my guitar
Just watch all... all the cars go by...

-----
Great song!! Best on the Musicology album.

It's about getting older and discovering the joy and peace of living quietly with someone you love. And yet, you're wistful as you remember all the times and events that made you what you are.

nod

But my question is, who's "U"? The details seem to specific to be a generic listener IMO.

At the time he was still married to Manuela... so I assume he was talking to her in the first couple of verses, then he starts 'reflecting' on the past, how things were 'back in the day'... and of course that's before, up to and maybe during Purple Rain ... hence his duet with Wendy, which emphasises that. I love the way they did that, she complimented him beautifully in that duet ... it's one of my favourite 'recent' songs, beautiful, kind of sad and wistful for the past when they were all trying to 'make it'....

This is my favorite verse of the song. Only Prince would talk about sitting on the stool in a otherwise sweet song.

You know I always thought that was 'stoop' as in any porch, platform, entrance stairway, or small veranda, at a house door. but I was obviously wrong, makes more sense though..!?

I'm pretty sure the lyrics do say "stoop".

I suppose Morris or Andre could've been who he was addressing with the "afro" line, but the rest of your post I think you might be spot on. hmmm

I absolutely love this song, the delivery, melody, message and music.

Depending on where you grew up there might be a porch or stoop. All the neighborhood kids would sit out in the evening and watch the world go by.

You're right - it is absolutely "stoop."

Why would Prince interrupt a perfectly poignant song with a reference to sitting on the can? rolleyes lol

With all the "out there" things the man has done, potty references haven't been among them.

It just ain't sexy. disbelief

The song reveals the comfortable contentment lover's can have between them. The days when U don't want to talk and U are just happy 2 have your friend close by. cool
