Prince is a great artist, and like many great artists, he has "eras" that some fans really get off on and when they move away from that era, they lose some fans.
Stevie Wonder is a similar artist. In the 70's, he had his own sound and was both experimental and funky. In the 80's, he went into a more pop/R&B direction that turned some fans off and won some others over. Personally, Prince has stuff from all of his eras that I love, but I find myself enjoying his more recent work (from Emancipation onwards) on a more consistent basis, because I love that R&B/funk sound more than anything. I like a lot of his 70's and 80's stuff too, but find I have to skip songs on albums and stuff a lot more, as a lot of it is just too abstract for me. [Edited 8/20/09 14:46pm]

They wouldn't even be here if Prince ran his business ventures the way they think he does! Remember NPGMC? They had their haven where they could walk around blind all day long without fear of hurting themselves because they were strapped down by Prince's censorship so as not to have one single free thought! How I look at it is a true fan is gong to listen with "open" ears and respond accordingly. If it sucks, guess what it sucks. Most fans, not just Prnce fans, are "yes" people. Everything he does is brilliant! Flawless! His greatest masterpiece!! Truth is as a fan u/we r defending our hero when some1 talks smack, even if it's from one of our own.
It's like being surrounded by "yes" people. Having some "no" people around adds some balanc to the mix.

i'm not going to be fake with my opinions just because i'm worried someone on the internet is going to call me a "hater". i'm also not going to pretend to be hipper-than-thou about what i DO like because there's some cheezy-ass prince music i LOVE, and when i am in the mood i can FAM OUT with the best of them. so screw all y'all. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

They'll never be another 1999, Purple Rain or SOTT....so get over it! That's why I love Prince's music and addicted to it, because I can put any music of his depending on my mood. RC, Musicology, Planet Earth, 3121 and Lotus Flow3r are amongst some of the best albums of this decade. Ps, I'm just listening to Planet Earth...and i'm loving it!!!!! I'm loving his new stuff aswell, I pop in Lotus Flower in the stereo every morning before school to get pumped. However, there is something genuinely special about that Purple Rain era... Prince shined in a dirrty gritty yet downright beautiful way. Those elements was what connected his somewhat self indulgent material to a vast audience.
