There are loads of examples I could give - all of the above and more but for me 2 that really stand out are:
The end of purple rain when he sings the harmony's he just sounds like an angel and makes me sob every time I hear it (have had to stop listening to on the bus cos people think someone died) I hear your voice - tremendous emotion but great vocals too !!!

Gave me goosebumps! i was thinking that too when i saw the thread (tho damn you still edges it for me) however...when he sings really deep near the end, love it. and i love when i point it out to people who arent big fans, and they usually go 'thats prince still???' Wouldn't you love to love me?

And from what P said about Montreux it sounds like we will have some favs from those shows too!!! The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

TyphoonTip said: This is an easy one for me. 'When the Lights Go Down'. The control & expression, in a low register in falsetto is simply amazing. It's all very well to sing in a mid-high comfortable range in falsetto, but do the same thing an octave or two lower, without slipping into your normal voice, is mind-blowing. The melodic variety for what is a pretty simple riff is stunning as well. I could go on and on about this..... If I ever want to convince someone of Prince's singing prowess, this is the track I play them. I think your onto it. This Post is produced, arranged, composed and performed by WetDream

I agree with every song that has been mentioned so far. What about:
The Ladder - at the end of the documentary "Party at Paisley"

Maybe ''Love 2 The 9's'' at around 04:50 - 05:15.

Of course, another great example of his vocals would be the beginning of the For You album.
Anyone else have good examples of his great vocal moments? You do know that the vocal (and guitar solo) for Purple Rain is taken directly from a live performance at First Avenue, right? His live vocal ability is one of the most incredible things about him. Yes, Im aware of that. Thats the main reason Its my favorite vocal moment.

You can run as many artists by me as you like but when I hear him sing like this its over for me! I am also going to throw in "Eye Hate U" and how about "Avalanche"?

it's "beautiful ones" for me, always.
starting with "do you want him? or do you want me?" sheesh. amazing. really the whole track is amazing. the slow build, and then the angry climax (literally?), and the cool down as it all subsides... so glad he stuck this on the album instead of "electric intercourse." if you could just pass your history class, baby, life would be all right.

I liked when he performed "Gotta Broken Heart Again" on the live in Vegas DVD. He sounded as if he was in the situation at the time, really feeling the music and words. I like that version better than the original!!

When I hear Condition of the heart it always reminds me of a classical operatic trained voice. And at 0:23 and 0:40 of Sometimes it snows in April, his voice sounds so close to the instrument playing you can't tell where his voice is.
These aren't his longest or his most popular moments but he literally took it to a higher level when he recorded these. [Edited 7/13/09 18:05pm]
