I had to bring up this old thread. Anyway...

His Best -

First Ave 1983 - "Electric Intercourse" cool eek cool

Most Recent -

Jay Leno 2009 - "Somewhere Here on Earth" cool

I agree. nod That version of Electric Intercourse is effing brilliant, such a beautiful vocal performance.

Also:
Don't Play Me. subtle and demonstrates Prince's great tone.
Solo. hauntingly beautiful.
How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore? the simple arrangement lets his voice shine
Scandalous. from the first line, "Come... closer... feel..." - chills!
How can I stand 2 stay where I am? / Poor butterfly who don't understand.

I agree with most comments, and what about 'Still Would Stand All Time'?

That just popped into my head when I was thinking of relevant passages - the end of the song is particularly powerful.

'Temptation' is pretty incredible all the way through - how he sings the words 'midas touch' like that is remarkable, and then goes down lower and lower to sing 'tempation, temptation, temptation...'.

And of course who could forget the particularly poignant 'Graffiti Bridge'?

'The of a boy..the love of a girl..' Ah yes, truly spectacular.

lol

it's "beautiful ones" for me, always.

starting with "do you want him? or do you want me?" sheesh. amazing.

really the whole track is amazing. the slow build, and then the angry climax (literally?), and the cool down as it all subsides... so glad he stuck this on the album instead of "electric intercourse."

The Montreux "I Love U But Eye Don't Trust U Anymore" vocals were near perfect, but I can't tell whether I like that or the Leno "SHOE" performance better.
Change it one more time..

The Beautiful Ones is a great showcase for all that he could do with that amazing set of pipes up to that point in his career. The first time I heard that scream, I just about lost my mind! It's so tortured and beautiful in this setting.

Somewhere Here On Earth on Leno, absolutely.

One Kiss At A Time has some of his sweetest singing ever.

Do U Lie? has it all - the beautiful low notes, the careening falsetto and the cracks in between as he stretches his, erm, instrument.

Finally, I like the way he sounds half-crazed on It.

don't know if it is the best, but I looooove this one:

SOUL SANCTUARY

That shit is felt and beautiful. How can a man sing like that? That vocal performance is just amazing.
It is not overproduced with too many vocal layers - very beautifully balanced and a fantastic melody it is too. and people say emancipation is plastic... to me this is just fantastic...

I really love Lovesexy, brilliant vocals!

Especially in this part:

All in life becomes easier
No question is unresolved and I'm not afraid now
Come on and touch it, I know U will love it
With it I know heaven's a butterfly kiss away

This feeling's so good in every single way
I want it morning, noon and night of every day (And if by chance)
And if by chance I cannot have it - I can't say
With it I know heaven is a just a kiss away, kiss away (Yeah)
Lovesexy

Wow. I can't disagree with any of the picks!

A few:

"Come" from 9:11 to 10:30.... The choralized voice is on point.
"Man o' War"
"It's Gonna Be Lonely"
"Private Joy"
"Mustang mix"

Way too many to name.

It's funny how this dude can simultaneously be my favorite vocalist AND musician.

Note:

Would luv to hear P's rendition of 'Pretty Wings'. P and Maxwell seem to take pride in romancin' the hell out of their vocals. They seem to have a vocal emphasis that not many others do. Save D'angelo and to a different extent, Anthony Hamilton. And of course, Eric Benet is a beast.

On the female side, anybody else feel the dark-red soul that Tweet's voice richly delivers? Try her song called 'Cruisin'.....

End of ramble.... wink

amen to all

IMO... Prince's falsetto is his best vocal moment.
But here are some of my favorites: (some have been mentioned. so highfive)

"For You" - the harmonies alone had me all eek

"So Blue" - the story goes, he waited until he had a cold to record it. true or not it is amazing when he sings "... and just crying over you..."

"I'm Yours" - all of it lol

"Forever In My Life"\"It" Medley on "Sign O' The Times" VHS\DVD? - Prince goes nuts "...forever in my life - I wanna do ya, I wanna do ya..." - forget falsetto. that was shrieksetto, but nice. giggle

"Avalanche" - ONA DVD - when he sings "no nobody wants to take the weight..." shivers always run up & down my spine

"I Love You But I Don't Trust You Anymore" - this right shere, makes me sad

"Gotta Broken Heart Again" - Live From Las Vegas DVD - blood was neck on neck with Maceo's notes

"S.H.O.E." - is pure honey, IMO

I could go on, wink

I am not really a fan of his falsetto. To often it lacks the power to really 'grab' me, but i must say in the falsetto-field the following songs are gems:
- How Come You don't call me anymore?
- Adore
- When the lights go out

I prefer him singing in his normal register, to me its more expressive and offers more 'depth'. Favourites of mine:
- Darling Nikki
- Purple Rain
- The Cross (especially the acoustic part)
- The Morning Papers

His performance of "Somewhere Here On Earth" on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno was the first thing that came to my mind when I read the title of this thread. I was just watching a high definition clip of it 2 days ago, just shaking my head in awe. Every note, every frame of his performance was flawless. I honestly don't know how he could have pulled that off, lol.

"Do Me Baby". I was listening to this the other day and his vocals are just so open and vulnerable on this. Very few singers could pull it off. As I listened to this song it dawned on me that it's not so much the lyrics that set Prince's slow jams apart from the slow jams of today, as it is the intimacy he creates. He sounds very honest. I get embarrassed for him sometimes. lol

"Kiss". Just electric. He packed such a colorful array of emotions into a pretty bare arrangement. It worked well.

"Reflection". Love the wistful tone.

IMO I won't count Prince's songs where he sung in Falsetto his best Vocal Moment. Because, it actually isn't his natural singing voice.

So, I would say his best showcases of his natural "Baritone" singing voice would be songs like:

When Doves Cry
Don't Play Me

He doesn't use his Natural Chest Voice enough. He relies to heavily on that Falsetto.

"Gotta Broken Heart Again" @ Live At The Aladdin...

I think somebody already mentioned it, but you just can't mess with it... I think the man exceeded himself there for sure, U could see him gearing it up for it through the performance and when he was ready, he went for it.
