Conservative columnist Andrew Sullivan has the most cogent thing to say about Michael. I want to share this with you all:
There are two things to say about him. He was a musical genius; and he was an abused child. By abuse, I do not mean sexual abuse; I mean he was used brutally and callously for money, and clearly imprisoned by a tyrannical father. He had no real childhood and spent much of his later life struggling to get one. He was spiritually and psychologically raped at a very early age - and never recovered. Watching him change his race, his age, and almost his gender, you saw a tortured soul seeking what the rest of us take for granted: a normal life.
But he had no compass to find one; no real friends to support and advise him; and money and fame imprisoned him in the delusions of narcissism and self-indulgence. Of course, he bears responsibility for his bizarre life. But the damage done to him by his own family and then by all those motivated more by money and power than by faith and love was irreparable in the end. He died a while ago. He remained for so long a walking human shell. I loved his music. His young voice was almost a miracle, his poise in retrospect eery, his joy, tempered by pain, often unbearably uplifting. He made the greatest music video of all time; and he made some of the greatest records of all time. He was everything our culture worships; and yet he was obviously desperately unhappy, tortured, afraid and alone. I grieve for him; but I also grieve for the culture that created and destroyed him. That culture is ours' and it is a lethal and brutal one: with fame and celebrity as its core values, with money as its sole motive, it chewed this child up and spat him out. I hope he has the peace now he never had in his life. And I pray that such genius will not be so abused again. http://andrewsullivan.the...chael.html

i think you should take this post off of this site love...1 you didn't kill him and 2...not quite sure if you're being sarcastic with the sorry or not...but i am sure people will be emotional about it regardless. It's a sad day for his family and his friends... Not being sarcastic at all. This is exactly what happened. It freaked me out to be quite honest. Sorry if it bothers anybody, but 1) I doubt his family or friends will read my post and 2) anybody here that gets upset is probably too emotionally involved with someone they don't even know. I'm not going to take it off, but if the mods want to I will not protest one bit. (It might be considered bad taste, I accept that. However, since this is my experience, I shared it. Again, sorry for any UNINTENDED offense.) [Edited 6/25/09 18:23pm] Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

I was never a big MJ fan and I only liked him when he was with the Jackson 5 after Thriller he went down hill.
For some they will remember the Good; for others they will remember MJ for the Not so good. I think now his Kids can have a better life - perhaps they can be with their mum. Now that he's gone a lot will be revealed about what he was realy like. Today is Michael Jackson's Judgement Day.

I loved Michael Jackson. He was so creative and it showed in his music and videos. A remarkable man.
Written and Composed by Michael Jackson. Produced by Michael Jackson. Childhood Have you seen my Childhood? I'm searching for the world that I come from 'Cause I've been looking around In the lost and found of my heart... No one understands me They view it as such strange eccentricities... 'Cause I keep kidding around Like a child, but pardon me... People say I'm not okay 'Cause I love such elementary things... It's been my fate to compensate, for the Childhood I've never known... Have you seen my Childhood? I'm searching for that wonder in my youth Like pirates in adventurous dreams, Of conquest and kings on the throne... Before you judge me, try hard to love me, Look within your heart then ask, Have you seen my Childhood? People say I'm strange that way 'Cause I love such elementary things, It's been my fate to compensate, for the Childhood (Childhood) I've never known... Have you seen my Childhood? I'm searching for that wonder in my youth Like fantastical stories to share But the dreams I would dare, watch me fly... Before you judge me, try hard to love me. The painful youth I've had Have you seen my Childhood....

I said it over at the Non-Prince section but I am still in shock. My heart dropped when I found out that Michael Jackson had died. Michael brought a lot of joy into my life as a child. He was the first artist that I loved and became a huge fan of. From Off The Wall to Invincible and even the Jackson 5 stuff, it all grabbed me in some way, shape or form. I have so many great memories of MJ and with him dying today, it sounds cliche but I feel like I lost a part of my childhood, I really do. There are so many imitators of his style today and while that goes to show how remarkable and amazing Michael's talent was, it also showed me that no matter how hard someone like Usher or Chris Brown tries to mimic an MJ move, there was, is and always will be 1 Michael Jackson. Hell without MJ, I might not have become a Prince fan as I believe Michael was the bridge that led me to Purple World, just in terms of fashion and music and how big they were in the mid 80's. God, I'm just so hurt with this, I really am. My prayers go out to the Jackson clan and his kids during this rough time
Michael Jackson, Rest in Peace. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Growing up the way he did he never had a chance to live a happy life IMO. It's sad. [Snip -Mars23] aside from the last line which is a bit so-so, what is NOT true about the rest of the message? The whole idea of ''ow, someone just died , we can only say good things about him" is SO hypocritical. Chocolatehandles already stated he never was a big MJ fan so why should he be less critical now? He made some valid points about the kids and the life behind the curtains. Sorry to be ranting so much but this whole "ow MJ was the best" in the media today upsets me quite a bit, as if the rest never happened...

It's really a testament to how huge he was at his peak that the news channels have barely touched any other subject since it broke last night. This is Princess Diana levels of hysteria. There aren't many pop singers who could garner this amount of attention.
