Popular among fans: Black Sweat.
it's just shit to me.

Ditto.

"Diamonds and Pearls" never quite grew on me. It's a bit bland as a ballad, esp from Prince, who is the ....well, PRINCE of balladry.

"Elephants and Flowers". Just vapid nonsense.

"The Greatest Romance Ever Sold". See above.

"Musicology". Trying too hard.

"Call My Name". Really, Prince? REALLY?

1999: It's like sooooo last century biggrin Seriously though, it's not the song itself, it's the fact that it seems to be the only song (and video) that I hear on the radio/MTV by him, move on already!

"Pink Cashmere"
"The Most Beautiful Girl In The World"

And although I love "Purple Rain" and think it's genius, I just can't listen to it for some reason.

I think w/ the PR thing, maybe you've just heard it enough. As much as I love the first 10 years of Prince's music, ultimately I don't want to hear those songs anymore. Not all the time. I often turns them off if they come on the radio in the car.

As far as the other two....LOVE EM.

I made a duet mix called "The Most Beautiful U In The World" back in 2002/3 and I listen to it more than either original version.

You said popular songs. Alot of songs you've listed are not even close to popular. The Everlasting Now, Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance,
Get On the Boat, The Greatest Romance Ever Sold, Life 'O' the Party? Since when did these songs become popular and who has praised them?

The Greatest Romance Ever Sold was a single, so by design, there is a built in popularity. Plus, I've seen it pop up on a lot of "favorites" lists.

I've read the praises of Everlasting Now, Get On the Boat, The Greatest Romance Ever Sold and to a lesser degree Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance and Life 'O' the Party. Those last two may be more hated than liked, though.

Do Me Baby - He did this type of song so much better later on. Give me Pink Cashmere any day.

Let's Go Crazy - Never been crazy about this and it feels dated.

Delirious - It works live but i prefer something a little edgier..ie Peach.

If people would not hype it, I would never consider it that great, Okay, it's a good song, but I dislike it.

But I'm all for the Musicology album, so...

I like "America" but absolutely can't stand the go nowhere long version.

Adore, not even close to being his best ballad.

I LOVE the album version of "I wish u heaven" but the extended mix ruins the song with all the extra crap that has nothing to do with the lyrics of the song. Terrible.

Batdance.Did this really go to #1? YUCK

Cream. See "Batdance".

Sexy MF, not a fan of his swearing songs. This one justs seems to swear because he can.

P control. Great message that could have been said a lot better.

Black sweat. Hurts my ears.

Crimson and clover. Give me Tommy James' version or even Joan Jett's version.

Erotic City. Yep. I went here. See the explanation for "Sexy MF". Otherwise a funky song, just hate the lyrics.

If you mean popular among Prince fans then I would have to say

Pink Cashmere.

Always thought it was kind of Prince exploiting himself. Like he was in the studio and thought to himself, what is more Princelike than pink cashmere? Hey that would make a great song title. I've got a title, now I just need a song to go with it.

I thought that the other day.
Maybe some people think "popular among Prince fans" vs. "popular in the mainstream".
There are songs that are raved over in this community that the average Joe has never heard. shrug

Your lies, they cut me.

With all due respect the person who started this thread posted these songs:

Shhh - That's what I say.
Cream - Creamed corn.
The Everlasting Now - The everlasting no.
Thieves In The Temple - I wish someone stole the master tapes.
Come - Limp.
Damn U - No. Damn U.
Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance - Yuck, yuck, yuck & yuck.
Cinnamon Girl - Flavorless rock.
Diamonds And Pearls - Ruined my favorite Sigue Sigue Sputnik riff.
The Greatest Romance Ever Sold - I ain't sold.
Eye Hate U - No. Eye Hate U, song.
Life 'O' the Party - Dead on arrival.
Get On the Boat - Send this to Davy Jones' locker.

To me that means popular to Prince fans. Most of those were not popular with average fans.

Most of the songs I put on my list were ironically, singles. So there's a certain amount of mass popularity, given the airplay of the song and/or video to a wider audience than the org. That said, I do see the other songs pop up here occasionally as favorites. Even in this thread.

I really just wanted to see some surprising results on this thread. It seems I did, as Kiss, Mountains, Gett Off, The Cross, Sexy MF and When Doves Cry received multiple thumbs down.
