It's interesting but we really don't hear 'religion' /Christian theology or straight forward spiritual/relgious songs/ideas until Purple Rain (not including the Our Father prayer in Controversy)

I feel like a lot of his songs could be read in a religious context, like "I Would Die 4 U" or "Paisley Park"...
