Something like that from Prince would revitalize and change the landscape of how I view him drastically.

I'd forgive him the weak lyrics post-2000 or so if the musical arrangements were more interesting. I think the focus ends up on the lyrics because of the music itself being off the pace of what came before.

Prince's arrangements used to have that total conviction 2 the songs.... The "1999" album had muti-layered arrangements to different sampling effects. IT was as if he was in his own world... "automatic" u could hear an arrangement eary on in the song that he brings back fully towards the end.... The use of the "takeoff airplane" effect was truly amazing..."lady cab driver" was probably his most ambitiously arranged song ever a lot going on there wa well

I don't think Prince ever had to work hard on his songwriting in the past, it just flowed out of him. The combination of inspiration, musicianship, youthful vigor and creative abandonment caused an incredible explosion of perfect music.

Something has changed though. I'm happy for the man to concentrate on his guitar playing live instead of dancing, that's to be expected. We can't expect him to do the splits anymore. And his voice is still incredible. But I don't think he's got the natural songwriting explosion happening anymore. You can hear snippets of ideas and melodies that he hears and records now, but can't seem to turn them into anything more.

You can imagine Prince brushing his teeth one evening, getting a little tune in his head, and rushing down to the studio to put it on tape. But whereas in the past that would have led to a really, really great song, now it leads to a single idea that more often than not goes nowhere. A jam, played so beautifully and polished so hard that it turns into something bland. The abandonment is gone,and the older, increasingly conservative Prince, seems creatively lost, or tired, or both.

And, with a few exceptions, the lyrics are now bland and boring. When he didn't give a fuck, he could say what he wanted, and even if wasn't graceful it still had an edge.

Prince has got a notoriously short attention span. Where that used to work to his advantage in the past, forcing him to work incredibly fast during his 'purple patch', now it is to the detriment of his songs. Anthony Kiedis has referred to songwriting as sometimes being very spiritual, and other times like taking a chisel to a block of concrete - unromantic, hard work. And Prince has never had to do the hard songwriting work, he's always been just too damn good. But it has left him at a disadvantage in these more creatively difficult times. His mojo seems out of whack, and he hasn't got good songwriting discipline to fall back on, just amazing musicianship.

I hope he gets his mojo back one day soon.
