[Edited 6/4/09 15:54pm] The notion that "Purple Music" is rubbish (not to mention the other tracks you've trashed) is insane! It's the absolute essence of Prince, and I believe embodies what makes him so great. If you'd honestly rather listen to NewPower Soul, I pray for your purple salvation. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you! | |

Moonbeam said: If you'd honestly rather listen to NewPower Soul, I pray for your purple salvation. Well, I did say that might be pushing it. As an album it's a bit poo but don't underestimate how much I really don't enjoy the previously mentioned tracks. I can't help it, I just don't like them.
But the point about the essence of Prince is interesting, what really is the essence? The catalogue is so wide and so varied that one style or group of songs can hardly be called the essence of him. Maybe, they were the essence of Prince at that time? Thinking about it, the only thing I can really think of that defines the 'essence' of Prince, is music itself. I should add that I was in no way a fan back then, only coming into the purple fold around 1991/92, maybe that has something to do with it? I don't like the majority of stuff prior to the 1999 album. The Prince album has some good stuff and I've recently developed an ear for Controversy. But For You and Dirty Mind don't do much for me at all. Dirty Mind has a few good tracks but I don't understand how it's rated so highly by some. One thing I do love about him though is how one person can love so many tracks that another hates, yet they're both hardcore fans. My fiancee is also a big fan but we like very different Prince's. [Edited 6/4/09 16:53pm] I agree with this 100%, just as Princes music is incrediably diverse, so are his fans. Sometimes the only things we have in common isnt even his music, just his name My name is Naz!!! and I have a windmill where my brain is supposed to be.....
