Prince and Madonna did a song together??

Ok I know i'm late but I just downloaded "like a prayer" by Madonna and was shocked to hear a duet by Prince and Madge!! Whoa!! How come this was not a huge controversial hit?? I like the song, it's got Prince written all over it. By the Way "Like a prayer" is a great album!! I wasn't expecting to like it as much because it's late 80's and i'm more of an early 80's girl!!

Its cause they literally just mailed it in and the song was a huge let down. Damn shame cause their voices sounded so good together. Huge missed opportunity.

"Love song" has been discussed here in the past. GREAT song! I don't think it would have been a hit. It was too "strange". I'm glad it wasn't released as a single.
Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

Yeah, The song is titled "Love Song" featured on Like A Prayer.
Also check out Paula Abduls album "Spellbound" that features a Prince song as well titled "U". That one is good as well.

He also plays guitar(uncredited) on Like A Prayer, Keep It Together and Act Of Contrition. Don't know if on the album or single versions.

I thought we came to the conclusion that "U" was horrible around here.

Ok now that is shocking!!

What do you all think of the song "so strong" on Dale Bozzio's Riot in english album? I really like it. I like the whole album but I know most people here think it's a dud.

There's just something 'bout you
Of all the people in the world
Why should I love you?

yeahthat

But yes dancerella, how did you NOT know about this? haha It was a crappy song, in comparison to other Prince songs, AND to the Like A Prayer album in general. To me, it always stuck out like a sore thumb on that CD. Frankly I think it was more of a Lovesexy type song that should have been a B-side with Sheila or Sheena or something.

If people listen, the opening guitar on "Like A Prayer" is also Prince, as well as that weird solo on "Act of Contrition". The story goes that Prince came around and played some wacky guitar shit, much of which was unusable. It was so far out there, and bizarre, that they dismissed both of it. If you listen to "Act of Contrition" part of that nonsense is the guitar solo on there.

Oddly, it very much sounds like Prince on "Keep it Together".

I love the Like A Prayer album and with Prince having done a lot on that CD, I guess I know part of why I love it.

Madonna modeled her career after Prince's. She's said as much, and so have the folks around her. She watched Prince very closely, examined his past, and the things he did. Once she came out in about 1984-ish, she really took the helm of doing things like Prince did. As far as their collaboration, I don't know if they did it just because they were both mega stars at the time, or they really wanted to do something together. It seems that either would be open to collabs with anyone really talented.

Oddly, neither have performed the song live.

Hope you paid for that download. It's worth having the CD. Back in the day, Madonna had her perfume in the ink on the CD and cassette covers. It smelled nice. You got a whiff of it every time you opened the case. Some used CDs still have that smell.

And PS That is a VERY personal album from Madonna. A lot of family, and Sean Penn stuff in there. She was going through a very hard time w/ the divorce and other things. It really shows in those lyrics if you listen.

Apparently, P and Madonna did MORE than just a song together. It was widely reported back during P's peak during the Purple Rain extravaganza (I always loved that word) that they were having a fling. Pop mags such as People and black teen mags such as Black Beat and Right On! wrote about this as well. Was it not mentioned in some book that P complained to one of his friends/co-workers that Madonna was "too wild" and too aggressive with him while they were fucking in the back of a limosine on the Purple Rain tour? Anyway, it was reported in 85 that it was a rumour that P's next film after PR was to star P and Madonna. A film P wrote titled "The Prince of Darkness and the Morning Star". This was before any word about UTCM, which it was rumored that Madonna was also originally was slated to star in that. This was before he considered Wendy's twin sis. The reason that Madonna wasn't in UTCM was because her then husband Sean Penn didn't want her working with Prince. These were the rumours that were out at this time when P was linked in the media with every hot woman on the planet.

Also, it's rumored that P not only played on Like A Prayer but that he actually wrote the song OR that he re-did the song by himself (along with copying the church choir vocals with his own) and that there is a version of his version of Like A Prayer in the vault. He did play on the other songs already mentioned such as Act of Contrition" which has his guitar recorded backwards. It's widely known that she was to also star in G.B. so who knows if she was to already have been in The Prince of Darkeness/Morning Star and UTCM. I always thought that Kristen Scott Thomas was picked because her eyes were somewhat similar to Madonna. Is it her eyes or something about her in that film always reminded me of Madonna. Madonna in an interview around the time of her work with P in the 90's on "Love Song", I can't recall if it was with Rolling Stone or where, but she talked of her and P being a lot alike. That they both had a chip on their shoulder and that they were working together on writing a musical. The chance of both of them to had starred in a film together, especially in the mid 80's, would have no doubt been HUGE. Odd that it was never capitalized on. Her in Desperately Seeking Susan after Purple Rain, they were the two hottest male/female artists at that time. Them in a film together would have went through the roof and been more popular than white bread and jam.

razz Well, P is a little brutha and Madonna, especially back then during her Like A Virgin period was kinda "thick". I'm sure somebody on here who's also a Madonna fan like SoulAlive knows of the source where this info was written.

Madonna was even supposed to star in Graffiti Bridge but turned the role down after reading the script.

Point is is that this stuff about P and Madonna was written about waaay before "Love Song" and G.B. The only thing I do know besides Madonna talking about that she and P "were a lot a like" and "we're writing a musical together" is that Madonna DID show up to one of P's Purple Rain shows and was out there on stage banging on a tamborine. Didn't she mention in her tell all book that she and P dated and that P broke it off with her? And that she was like "How dare he break up with me?!" or some shit like that? I thought I saw a thread on here about that tell all book by Madonna where she stated that she and P actually dated. Like I said before, SoulAlive, who's a fan of Madonna, should know.

Bad was intended to be a duet with MJ and Prince. Prince declined saying, "The first line is your butt is mine. Now I ain't singin' that to you, and you sure aren't singing it to me. Right there we got a problem"

I think this quote came from an interview Prince did with Chris Rock. Quincy Jones also talks about the proposition of Bad as a duet on the album's special edition release.

It was on Chris Rock. Quincy gave a slightly diff version where Prince said, "You don't need me for this. It's already a hit without me."
