I thought that was a great interview. Prince seemed to lose a little focus in the end in his effort to get a few of his pet conspiracies mentioned. But still it's a pretty rare treat to get something more or less in-depth from him.
And he's a pretty normal guy when all's said & done (though I do live in Berkeley so my perspective is a little skewed) I have to agree Tavis is something of a buffoon, though. I've never actually watched him until now. My Legacy

i also did not get the comment about religion, to anyone looking from outside into the US, The US seems the most religious place in the world. They tried to ban Richard Dawkins in Oklahoma. Also, what was prince referring to regarding not being told about presidents before George Washington. The thing that I disliked most about it however, was that prince did the age old thing and imply that you need religion to be moral. so if there was no god? your telling me you would just kill/rape anyone, constantly commit crimes? answer no: well then you don't need god or religion to be moral. and if you do then that actually isn't morality, that’s subjugation. 1. Why do people assume that this interview is the "real" Prince? It is an act just as much as his onstage persona.
2. I love that he went off the path a bit at the end. Reminded me of those crazy/rare interviews he'd do in the 80's when he'd speak in riddles. "New Power slide...."

2elijah said: tuztones said: Nice innerview by TAVIS but I was a bit stunned by PRINCE'S reaction to PRESIDENT OBAMA. I understand that as a JAHOVAH WITNESS Prince does not vote and that is cool.....but I felt that PRINCE'S reaction to him was a bit off. Our new PRESIDENT is working very hard on tackling our everyday issues concerning the economy not to mention a whole lot of other things. Isn't PRINCE working on tackling the world that we live in just as well as our new PRESIDENT? I truly do not understand PRINCE'S reaction to him. He acted almost like he could not be bothered with PRESIDENT OBAMA. Both are working to making a better world. One with his lyric's and music and the other with taking on everyday situations at the WHITE HOUSE and all around the country. Both have GLOBAL matters to take on.
I was utterly stunned by PRINCE'S reaction to our PRESIDENT and a bit concerned. Ok.....you don't want to celebrate holidays like Christmas, you choose not to vote, and you have a different vision concerning politic's and religion, but the reaction that PRINCE had was uncalled for. Sorry PRINCE.....PRESIDENT OBAMA is trying to spread and uplift love and power throughout our nation just like you so there was no reason to have the reaction you had when the discussion of our new PRESIDENT came up. Isn't it all about UNITY????? You are both on the same page there PRINCE. Where was the conversation about the new 3 cd set and how he got in with TARGET? How about a conversation concerning the current sales status since it is being sold only with one outlet other than in joining in on the website. STAY TUNED UNTIL TOMORROW FOR PART 2 of this innerview. Peace.....Nicky Tuzio e-mail: tuztones@optimum.net Not everyone voted for President Obama. Nowhere in his interview did Prince insult President Obama or said anything disrespectful about him. He stated how he felt about the presidency in this country period and went into discussing other areas of that. His feelings about President Obama, was not the only issue discussed. He also discussed some of the lyrics in his song "Dreamer". Which is what I was hoping he did during that interview, although Tavis stated he had 3 of Prince's songs that he wanted to ask him about the lyrics, which will be discussed in part 2 tonight. For the song "Dreamer", Prince spoke of Dick Gregory, activist/author from the 60s, who was/is one of his mentors and friends, and mentioned that he was the inspiration for writing "Dreamer". Prince talked about the "Chemtrails" issue. Prince stated how after listening to Mr. Gregory speak at one of "State of the Black Union" (SOBU) conferences about "chemtrails", and how it was Mr. Gregory, who is a friend of Prince, is responsible for his awareness on the issue of "chemtrails." Only thing is I don't recall Prince mentioning the book title of Mr. Gregory's book, in which I wish he did, but he did suggest that people go over to Dick Gregory's site and check it out, so I guess that's what I will be doing, checking out Mr. Gregory's site. Tavis also asked Prince who his mentors were throughout his life, and Prince mentioned the late boxer, Jack Johnson, as one of his mentors based on Mr. Johnson's strength and perseverance as a boxer. He stated that during Mr. Johnson's time, and during those tumultous times, that no matter how many times Mr. Johnson, as a boxer was knocked down, he still got up, and he admired Mr. Johnson basically for his strength and perseverance. On the subject of "critcism", Prince basically stated that he doesn't mind "constructive criticism" especially when it is regarding his music, especially when it comes from those who are your loved ones or friends, as constructive critism is done out of love, and advice given to help one improve either with self or specific areas of interest, like his music. He mentioned Miles Davis as one of his friends who gave him constructive criticism regarding his music, but yes, Prince did say the other kind of criticism, the kind done out of malice, with a twist of sarcasm and ill-will, that comes from those those who don't really know him or are his supposed friends does hurt. In my opinion, in discussing the latter, apparently the criticism he speaks of that seems to hurt him or any of us, is the kind of criticism that is definitely not from an inspirational or improvement standpoint, when one gives a friend some advice on how they can improve either with self or some other specific area of interest, but moreso out of malice and disrespect. He discussed being epilectic until the age of 7, which is when he stopped having seizures. He discussed how he felt about the "State of the Black Union" Conference, and how he's had an interest in many of the issues discussed in the conference, and also mentioned Dick Gregory and Cornel West and the many talks they've had when he gets together with them, including Tavis to discuss those issues. There was a lot more said on that, but I'll wait for someone else to mention it. All I know is during the discussion, Prince apparently has a lot of concern for the black community as well or I doubt he would partake in the SOBU discussions with his friends mentioned in this post. In closing I found the interview interesting and Prince opened up quite a bit about himself and of his concerns/interests about other issues. Part II continues tonight, and I can't wait to see what else he has to say. duplicate text edit [Edited 4/28/09 9:19am] No offense but I think the key point that you both missed regarding his comment about voting and President Obama is as a Jehovah Witness his trust and faith is in Jehovah and not a human being. And even though President Obama has good intentions the bottomline the only promises which we can depend are from God's bible prophecies. No human being no matter how good their intentions can change God's will or stop prophecy from being fulfilled. A human being with the greatest intentions maybe able to provide some minor temporary relief for some people but the only answer to mankinds issues is Jehovah and Jesus. Just KeepinItReal

That interview was so incredibly confusing. I just keep getting reminded what a walking contradiction Prince is.
He talks of how he loves people in his past and doesn't understand when people say bad things about him, yet he gets his personal digs on people through some of his songs. Also, it's a head scratcher to me when he writes songs like Dreamer yet his JW status keeps him out of the voting booth. We are here to love each other and take care of each other but voting for someone that can make that possibly happen is wrong? He's never talked about his illness before?

He pretty much stated that he's good with it as long as it offers something and doesn't just seek to belittle and degrade based on personality or the writers' lack of creativity. He actually even admitted that some of the things his heard was actually hurtful. Should be required viewing to all on the org... judge not less thee be judged.

I dont why people are reading so much into Prince's interview, hes a person with beliefs and opinions, just like joe schmo on the corner. Just because hes got talent and hits and things like that dont mean that he has to have something that will change the world, hes a person. As for the Obama thing, why does Prince have to say anything? He complimented him, he said no ill of him, so he didnt bow down and kiss the ground, Prince is not into politicians like that, he is more into SPEAKERS he said this long ago. So take it with a grain of salt, agree with what you want, disagree at what you want, but remember you are the one that are putting him in this higher power persona and then bitching because he doesnt say what you want to hear. I never stated that Prince puts his faith in any human being, as I don't believe anyone should to a point where they feel one is a messiah or could "do no wrong". You can trust to a certain degree in some people that are close to you, but don't expect "perfection" from them. Humans are prone to "err" if you will. So no disrespect, but no need to preach to me. I was pretty impressed at the first half of the interview. It is evident that there is trust between Tavis and Prince. I felt like he was speaking confidently and professionally until the last five or ten minutes of the interview. Until then I was sort of proud of him, then he dove right off planet Earth. I dig spiritual talk probably more than the next guy, but tame it up and wrap it in a sanity blanket. Tavis nodded to some of Prince's prophetic statements in a way that makes me think that Tavis is prolly JW also.
It was entertaining. Sort of shallow in some places though. We are all so full of here

I was thinking, "This is a really nice interview. He's coming across as intelligent and thoughtful and way less disingenuous than usual!" He was forthcoming. Poised. Relaxed. Likable! A humble underdog who'd overcome a tough childhood and triumphed via the virtue of sheer hard work. And then it happened. Conspiracy theory...the usual religious gobbledegook... Oh, well...I guess ya can't have everything. But much, much better than past interviews.
