i know what he's trying to say with that line but it just seems so nonsensical. radio is a business. he's not too far gone to see that yet. if he gives radio what it needs they will play his music.

things like youtube and hip-hop blogs really function the way he is lamenting radio doesn't. and he tries to sue those kinds of community resources into the ground. eek spontaneous social cohesion can't be controlled by a mastermind producer.

i think it's this model of the mega-rich superstar that works at cross-purposes to artists maintaining control of their work, longterm financial benefit from their work, and even their sanity. there are a lot of musicians none of us will have ever heard of who, leveraging the internet, make a decent living from their work and are beholden to no one. in a lot of ways prince helped lay the groundwork for that, at least as a form of inspiration, but it's really the inertia of the long tail that makes it inevitable. record companies have become irrelevant more as a function of how society has changed than through any real fault of their own. (much as how they became successful as a byproduct of material scarcity, which was likewise more a confluence of coincidental factors rather than any real vision on the part of corporations).

prince feels like he hasn't been paid what he's worth. hopefully, the fact that we keep showing up for his albums and websites will get through to him someday.

PRINCE will never have another radio hit plain and simple, he will get some play, but lets be real, here are the songs that have garnered him play in the last 10+ years.

SomeBody's SOmebody
Call My Name
Satisfied
Somewhere on Earth
U're Gonna C me

3 of the last 4 are the same song. Prince cant get any wide play anymore, and the play he gets are for "typical" ballads that are all in the same predictable "prince" mode.

Please explain to me how they are the same song??? I mean sometimes you guys just say some shiggidy and think that it is a fact. None of these songs even sound alike but I am waiting for you to answer just how they are the same song???

Wow, not bad for just selling it at one retailer. Who needs record companies when all you need to do is get together with a popular retailer, get them to promote you with a commercial, go on a late night show for 3 nights to promote it, do 3 concerts in a day, and open a website to draw attention to your album? Cool. headbang Even the haters couldn't stop that.
[Edited 4/7/09 13:21pm]

congrats Prince...like the song goes, you did it your way.
you didn't swear, sing about explicit sex, you were spiritual
and played your instruments. no matter what happens in the future,
you have actually defeated the gatekeepers. all those 'critics'
who want to uphold the status quo were also made to look foolish.

let me add as well...3 cd's at a go!!! that's damn impressive,
and respect must be given where it's due.

times since he has freed himself from hegemonic media forces.

So is the album actually on sale at retailers outside of the US yet? I haven't seen it anywhere in the UK yet, including HMV in Edinburgh. It isn't even listed on Amazon.co.uk or Play.com as far as I can see.

this is actual units.only the riaa certification will reflect that its a triple disc.by that standard its a gold record(180,000 x 3=540,000)

Its not a given since he broke list price, he is only charging 11 dollars, which is the list price for 1 cd. The Eagles did the same thing at walmart with the 2cd set they had which sold 3 million which should have been a 6X mark since it was two cds, but the set was priced as one, therefore counted as one, PRINCE will most likely lose on this one for certification, unless he sells 500,000 straight, which is NOT LIKELY at all.

How do u know he won't sell 500.000? This album is already proven successful way more than 3121 which eventually sold over 500.000. Some of U fans I think wish 4 Prince 2 fail........
eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

Musicians? That's a laugh.

how much does it cost prince per year to keep l.a. studios on retainer? figures were posted recently.

how much did prince spend making 'tmbgitw'? figures have been published.

i'm just saying, prince can go through $2 million pretty quickly. it's unlikely that he has compiled three albums plus videos plus marketing for under $2 million.

anyway, i don't think the target figures are any measure of his take. likely he received a sizable advance on the target deal and has no more financial stake in future sales.

well price has squat to do with whether it gets certified or not.that was an OLD riaa standard(like singles selling 1,000,000 only being certified gold)
second why not have faith that prince will sell the hell out some records.geez...we all love the man dont we?

To clear up all confusion in regards to multiple Cd albums.

Chart status:
Billboard's weekly sales charts are powered by Nielsen SoundScan sales data. When an album is counted by Nielsen SoundScan, it doesn't matter if there is one CD inside the package, or 20: it still counts as ONE sale.

Certification:
With RIAA, Multi-Disc Set, each unit within a set counts as one unit toward certification. 500,000 units for Gold Certification, 1,000,000 units for Platinum Certification, 2,000,000 units for Mulit-Platinum Certification and is recertified at each million unit sales level. SoundScan (Billboard) measures over-the-counter sales at music retail locations, while the RIAA®'s certification levels are based on unit shipments (minus returns) from manufacturers to a wide range of accounts, including non-retail record clubs, mail order houses, specialty stores, units shipped for Internet fulfillment or direct marketing sales, such as TV-advertised albums. The other difference is that SoundScan's archive is only a few years old, while the RIAA® has tracked artists' sales levels for more than 40 years.

Because the numbers I posted come directly from Soundscan which is what Billboard uses to create their charts. I don't know where that other chart came from.
