I think this is a good thing for several reasons:

1) Firstly, this will be his fifth album to debute at #1. It'll be very hard for even the most ignorant of folks to say he's an 80s phenomenon. I remember not to long ago that Fred Durst once said "When's the last time this guy had a hit record?" lol Fuck you Fred.

2) The fact that the product he released is a solid product makes it better for buzz. Nothing was more disappointing than a so-so record like Musicology to generate so many sales, but be so lackluster that there was no buzz. This album will generate buzz cause it's got something for everyone...and it's done well.

3) It's price very reasonably. 12 bucks for 3 CDs? You can't beat that. So even if you're not 100% crazy about Prince, it seems like a good deal.

5) Every time Prince has a successful release, he always does something really bizarre to fuck things up. I can't wait to see what he comes up with next. I've been bored lately--this will entertain me somewhat.

What's reason number 4?

I agree. It was so popular overall that it felt like a #1 album at the time.

It made it to #3. But as you know, the music industry was a bit different then. And that year you had a bunch of good music out, the Red Hot Chili Peppers's Blood Sugar Sex Magic, Nirvana's "Nevermind", Tribe Called Quests "Low End Theory", Siouxsie & The Banshees "Superstition", Seal's first album, NWA's Niggaz4Life, Pearl Jam's "Ten".... Plus in those days, the majority of people actually went into record stores to BUY music. These days people just pirate everything they can think of.
Change it one more time..

I agree with Imago. It's cool that this album is actually pretty good. There could actually be some buzz around it. It was nice to see the publicity around Musicology, but it was clear that was not the album this fan wanted the rest of the world to rediscover Prince through.

hmmm..and you know this personally? lol In any case, with only promoting the album with Target, 3 tv appearances, 3 shows in one night, one commercial, opening of his website. I say he did pretty good.

well i turned on my tv and prince told me so. he says it in a few songs. he begs interviewers to believe him that he doesn't care about the charts.

it would be cool if they didn't feel the need to mention it.

it's not important. right?

biggrin

i'm happy he's achieved this. as an independent. it's very, very, very good for him and for big name artists wanting to move away from the labels in general. it sets a positive example and shows that you can make a dent on your own.

Well, it gives hope to independent artists, and I'm sure those who were critical of the album in a negative fashion, and didn't think it would do well on the charts were obviously wrong.

You have a good point. There is a little more hype behind this project though

(it seems that way). But 3121 did have the label support. I'm a little

surprised that radio has not picked anything. What about the station that

previewed the four cuts, or the one that played "Turn Me Loose." It's all a

little bit strange. Maybe Prince is adament about keeping his songs off the

radio, along with all the crap that's being played out there.

Doesn't this mean just 60k has been sold? If he's actually shifted more then 180k units I'd be very surprised. I'd think it counts as three for each cd. Then there are the bulk numbers which worldwide distributors have bought from Target - thousands, likely. I'd love for this CD to be a huge success, but, I'm realistic. Holding back the worldwide release might just be a marketing move to boost his first week position in the US. Another unique chart cheat from the wee man! lol

Give credit where it's due! Prince SOLD 185,00 copies of Lotusflow3r. Soundscan doesn't multiply the number for multiple discs...the RIAA does that for gold and platinum certifications. So the album will already be certified Gold since 185,000x3=555,000 (you need 500k discs SHIPPED for gold certification).

RIAA certification is for units shipped, Soundscan numbers are for units SOLD. More than 185,000 copies of Lotusflow3r were purchased.

I dont think RIAA is gonna count this as 3 because of list pricing, he priced these cds at basically 4 dollars each, which is way below list price. This happend to the Eagles who sold 3 million and were certified for 3 million and not 6million since it was a double, they priced their 2cd set at 11.98, so Prince may actually have to sell another 350,000 for Gold, or at least ship them, and sorry but i dont see this album selling more than 300,000 overall.

i know what he's trying to say with that line but it just seems so nonsensical. radio is a business. he's not too far gone to see that yet. if he gives radio what it needs they will play his music.

things like youtube and hip-hop blogs really function the way he is lamenting radio doesn't. and he tries to sue those kinds of community resources into the ground. eek spontaneous social cohesion can't be controlled by a mastermind producer.

i think it's this model of the mega-rich superstar that works at cross-purposes to artists maintaining control of their work, longterm financial benefit from their work, and even their sanity. there are a lot of musicians none of us will have ever heard of who, leveraging the internet, make a decent living from their work and are beholden to no one. in a lot of ways prince helped lay the groundwork for that, at least as a form of inspiration, but it's really the inertia of the long tail that makes it inevitable. record companies have become irrelevant more as a function of how society has changed than through any real fault of their own. (much as how they became successful as a byproduct of material scarcity, which was likewise more a confluence of coincidental factors rather than any real vision on the part of corporations).

prince feels like he hasn't been paid what he's worth. hopefully, the fact that we keep showing up for his albums and websites will get through to him someday.

PRINCE will never have another radio hit plain and simple, he will get some play, but lets be real, here are the songs that have garnered him play in the last 10+ years.

SomeBody's SOmebody
Call My Name
Satisfied
Somewhere on Earth
U're Gonna C me

3 of the last 4 are the same song. Prince cant get any wide play anymore, and the play he gets are for "typical" ballads that are all in the same predictable "prince" mode.
