Give credit where it's due! Prince SOLD 185,00 copies of Lotusflow3r. Soundscan doesn't multiply the number for multiple discs...the RIAA does that for gold and platinum certifications. So the album will already be certified Gold since 185,000x3=555,000 (you need 500k discs SHIPPED for gold certification).

RIAA certification is for units shipped, Soundscan numbers are for units SOLD. More than 185,000 copies of Lotusflow3r were purchased.

Not that we need to get into it here in depth. For RIAA rules, does the pricing of the CD at $11.99 effect its gold certification ? In other words do they count it as a single unit rather than mutiply by three since it's list price is that common to a single CD

I pretty sure this amount doesn't reflect any fan-club members who joined up and got the download version. Shows how savvy the man has gotten when it comes to selling his albums without a mainstream record company.

Sadly, the record industry never changed with the times and are losing their shirts. They can blame Prince and other artists like him, but they only have themselves to blame. In five or ten years from now, the record industry as we knew it will be a thing of the past.

I believe 1 set counts as one unit, but I could be wrong.

Why can't you just give the man his due!

He sold the set at an affordable price and did some decent promotion for it. Remember this is without radio or video airplay.

Behave yourself. Read what I wrote. 'I'd love for this CD to be a huge success'. I always give Prince - or any artist - their 'due' when they deserve it. If the 180k is legit, then I'm first in the queue to congratulate him. However, only a fucking [Snip - luv4u] believes all those copies went to 180,000 fans. Thousands bought by world-wide distributors. Thousands of extra copies bought by nutters. I'm not a hater just because I'm not blind.

That's possible, I know there have been restrictions before on pricing and run time with the RIAA. I guess we'll know in a month or so.

How do you know?
[Edited 4/7/09 13:34pm]

Legit ..meaning thats the way they count them on Hits and Billboard. Multi disc units do not get mutiplied by 3 or what ever. That the way its done with every multiple cd sale by any artist.

That's really impressive considering the zero radio and video play, AND it's only being sold by a single retailer. Wow.

Not really, because most major artists don't just release their work in a single territory. It's quite a deviously clever move. Props to him, even though it means I - and thousands of other fans worldwide - have to pay over the odds.

There'll Never B is getting SOME, but not enough to count for anything. It has been added to XM/Sirius's Heart and Soul as well as KJLH and a few other local stations.

Doesn't this mean just 60k has been sold? If he's actually shifted more then 180k units I'd be very surprised. I'd think it counts as three for each cd. Then there are the bulk numbers which worldwide distributors have bought from Target - thousands, likely. I'd love for this CD to be a huge success, but, I'm realistic. Holding back the worldwide release might just be a marketing move to boost his first week position in the US. Another unique chart cheat from the wee man! lol

Is this gold certification even if the discs. were less than 60 mins. or is it 50mins each? Also, does the price of the three discs factor into the certification?

The time limit on an album doesn't count. Albums like Dirty Mind, For You Chaos and Disorder are all counted as albums, but they are between 30 and 40 minutes in length.

Well this is great, Congrats to Prince for once again beating the system.
Just goes to show what can be done
One retailer, minimum airplay, very fairly priced cd etc etc

At this stage of the game I don't really care very much for charts and I wouldnt necessarily go looking there for my music but I'm happy about this, its like a slap in the face to many out there ripping people of.

Impressive biggrin

Nope, you're a "hater" because you didn't come here to post "WHOOOO HOOOO PRINCE IS NUMBER ONE !!!1111!!!!!1111 SUCKAZZZZZ". Anything less than unconditional support without understanding the results in one being a "hater". I, too, would be interested in finding out if the album counts as "3" instead of "1". Not that it would change my opinion of the album or anything because we all know that these types of things (chart positions/album sales) don't matter to Prince.

Right?
• Did you first think Prince was gay? •

Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman. Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.

As oppose to Keith Urban's CD which also came out In america ahead of it's UK release?

Ok so it's uk release was yesterday and Prince's is now alledgedly next week but that happens all the time.

And if it makes you feel better you could just consider the US'ers as paying under the odds.
