....and? He is hardly trying to disguise the tribute. It's no different to him taking on James Brown ...The Work pt1 and Prettyman etc.

If this was a problem, Lenny Kravitz, wouldn't have had a career. lol

SO because prince did Habibi which is the exact chord progression of Machine gun he is a copier?, no he is simply showing respect to the song and in this case its very similar. Yet though in its own way dreamer is very different from voodoo child, but yes thats where he received the Idea. Everyone knows that this is similar to voodoo child and prince expects us to know, when he does james brown like songs is that stealing? No he is just passing it on further more for the times james cant smile and to pay tribute to him

It is a tribute and only the first minute of the song.

"Habibi" is actually a cover of "Machine Gun" that he recorded and gave to the Hendrix family to use any way they saw fit.

They didn't use it, so he gave it to us.

if prince didnt get permission to use the first part and some of the guitar riffs, they have every right to sue.

I don't know about Voodoo Child but definitely Purple Haze! It's pretty obvious and something you hear right away if you know the song so it's hardly like he's stolen a song and pretends it to be his own. I'm sure Jimi's name is in the booklet.

Bob Dylan "stole" almost all his songs. He's still acknowledged as one of the greatest ever.

Big Jimi fan here and I thought the performance was superb. I really don't get the "steals" from Hendrix sentiment. Influenced by Hendrix? Certainly. Why would this be "disgusting"?

I thought the same thing when i first listened to it.

EVEN his vocals are aping Jimi, and you're right. I aint mad, its not like we are overwhelmed with Jimi guitar players in contemporary music right now.

Its refreshing to me really and thanks for the post I'm going over to Amazon and getting me some Jimi for my blackberry.

Can you be specific? What in the "first part" or guitar riffs would give them a right to sue?

You're acting like it's some secret that Hendrix influenced Prince. The Kid is proud of such a thing, and it's certainly nothing new. As far back as his so-called glory days, Hendrix exerted an influence (just listen to The Beautiful Ones after hearing Jimi's Angel).

How is it disgusting?
Did it ever occur to you that he was paying tribute to Hendrix's Voodoo Child?
He actually quotes the Voodoo Child riff in his guitar solo.

The Hendrix estate didn't sue "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan for using the song for his entrance theme in his WCW/NWO days, I highly doubt they will sue Prince.
Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.
