Of course it does. You didn't recognize that opening riff?? confused

Thats one of the most famous Hendrix riffs ever hell maybe even ROCK period.

And btw its really a "Homage" to Jimi, not a rip-off! Get it? lol

nah c'mon...I mean everybody knows the riff from Vodoo Chile!

Lotusflower has been declared as a "pure" Rock album!
So er 1+1 = Not 3 lol but 2 as far as i know!

And if Prince "borrows", he doesn't do it in such a blatant way you know... If he "borrows" then he hides it much better, like in "Kiss" - thats indeed a rip-off song if you ask me... wink

well, after listening to the album version I must concur that Prince has been listening to some Electric Ladyland lately lol

The songs are not actually that similar, but they have elements (particularly the intro) that are just unmistakable.

Whatever, I actually prefer this "borrowing from" the song rather than if he'd just covered it. That would have been dull.

unless he has express permission from the hendrix estate (and I imagine he would), then he could get sued for borrowing without permission if they choose to. I cant see what is so difficult to understand about that.

he still needs permission whether its the whole song or part of the song. if someone sampled a riff from kiss and raspberry beret, they would still have to ask prince (or whoever owned the license to those songs). the person in question would have to be at least credited and they could sue for recompense or have an agreement on licensing.

He didn't sample anything from Voodoo Child, it just sounds similar. Nothing is directly lifted from the song, but it certainly was inspired by it.

Yeah its a lot like Voodoo Child. But in a good way and so far from the original no one will dare to sue...

Love the track!! cool

if prince didnt get permission to use the first part and some of the guitar riffs, they have every right to sue.

It may be incredibly similar and using the same guitar sound but if you listen the riff is different.

If artists could be sued for doing stuff that sounds similar there'd be a lot less bands around.

I think it sounds more like a slower version of Fury, actually.

Actually, "Fury" has a similar arrangement and vocal stylings of Jimi's version of "All Along The Watchtower". Being a guitarist and a student of Prince, Jimmi an Carlos Santana, I hear both of those guys influence on Prince riffs and solos throughout the new offerings. biggrin

As far as his playing goes someone pointed out, Prince started playing Hendrix riffs in recent years. Especially after he started playing the blue strat. Sure he did "Purple House", but there was a definite shift when he incorporated the strat and whammy bar. He's always played Santana type licks as far back as say "Computer Blue" or even "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad".

I think he always had the Jimi thing going on, visually & musically, I think he denied it before and is not so afraid to admit it now.

BTW I no longer think Dreamer sounds like fury, except for how the chords go up a minor third and then descend in the refrain.

It makes sense, too, as he's singing about MLK that he would reach back to a key song of the late 60's for inspiration.

There are a couple of points in that song that are direct allusions to "Voodoo Child" and "Purple Haze", but the song as a whole is not a "rip off". In fact, Prince is pretty much doing, in this song, what Jimi used to do with classic blues licks. He incorporates bits of the classic licks into the song, but the overall tune is new. Rock musicians, especially guitarists, have been doing this since...oh, forever! Jimmy Page has publicly acknowledged that he couldn't even begin to name all the blues artists he's "borrowed" from, and the same is true of Clapton, Santana, Dylan, Van Halen, The Edge and just about every rock guitarist who has ever been given the status of "legend".

I could be wrong, but I think that was some good-natured ribbing, not a real threat to sue (since Larry doesn't own that publishing anyway). P also busted Lenny's chops for "stealing" from him when he released "Again" (which was a re-write of P's "Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do"). Like I said, my memory on that may be faulty, but I don't think it was a serious threat.

Understand this guys, Words like beauty are in the eyes of the beholder...

How u define Steal or Tribute depends on the meanings u give to these 2 words and they are intepreted differently by different people from different backgrounds...

I may use the word steal but actually I do not feel its wrong!!!

If u guys dare to say its a Tribute, Did P tell u that himself?

Next time you get in a hurry to correct someone, you should make sure that you're correct yourself. My comment was in reference to previous poster's mention of Dylan stealing his songs. You can tell that by the fact that it's the post I quoted orignianlly (see how this internet message board thing works?)

Dreamer is just an excuse to rip into some guitar solos...sort of like "Fury"...they are both good songs but not especially original.

I thought the same thing when i first listened to it.

EVEN his vocals are aping Jimi, and you're right. I aint mad, its not like we are overwhelmed with Jimi guitar players in contemporary music right now.

Its refreshing to me really and thanks for the post I'm going over to Amazon and getting me some Jimi for my blackberry.

That's funny...I've only heard Jimi on the classic rock station and after checking out this video I'm heading to Amazon myself...I feel like I need to know more than Purple Haze, Watchtower and Voodoo Child...

i guess my point is that apart from the bassline I think those songs sound quite different, especially as you move to the verse and chorus - and they sued successfully! in dreamer, the intro is the same although the song is different. When I make music I have to credit every sample I use, even if it is 5 seconds long - I know prince doesnt use samples, but he has to credit hendrix for that riff. Just think, if hendrix didnt make that song, do you think he would use that riff?
