I wonder if Prince asked permission to use The Buzzcocks "Are Evertything" melody as the basic melody for Raspberry Beret.

As if Prince has ever heard a Buzzcocks song in his life.

C'mon. Prince had a very open mind to all kinds of music back in the day. Not to mention, Wendy & Lisa introduced him to their influences as well. It's not a huge leap from Prince being a Fishbone fan in the early eighties to him perusing the 'Cocks.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Maybe it's just a "reimagining" of Voodoo Chile! LOL Could also be paying homage to the guitar genius. Who really cares. Everything is derivative or inspired by something else and "Dreamer" is an AWESOME track however you label it.

Why in the HELL do you people keep calling it Voodoo "Chile"??!!!?? It's "Child"!!! I know not all of you do, but a jarring number do. Look it up first, before you post continuous wrong, misspelled shit over and over again!!!

I love when people wrongly correct other people.

Prince usually disguises his theft of ideas just enough to avoid lawsuits. This seems to be his modus operandi. It's all part of the 'Prince is a genius' myth. Yes, a genius thief and media manipulator. To be fair, almost all musicians have done this (Mozart, Beethoven, Bob Dylan for example), but most don't then defend their own property rights with Prince's zealousness. I think that's want gets up people's noses. Maybe that's just 'the game' and Prince knows the rules and plays it to perfection. We should come up with a list of Prince's steals - it would be vast (I suspect the thieving began when he played in a covers band and memorized a vast amount of popular 70s music, which he has then recycled ad infinitum).

Yeah. Songs called Voodoo Child (Slight Return) and Voodoo Chile are both from Electric Ladyland. The riff that Prince borrows heavily from is from Voodoo Child (Slight Return). I can certainly see why folks use the two spellings interchangeably.

"Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" was officially changed to "Voodoo Chile" when it was released as a single.

Voodoo Chile (with an E) is a slow, bluesy song.

Voodoo Child (with a D) is the fast, rockin' song with blazing solo work. This is the one they play on the radio, and is the one that Dreamer sounds sorta like.

They are not interchangeable.

Well, I have them both in my library (in various studio/live versions) and they're nothing alike.

Prince's style has shifted from Santana-esque fluidity to Hendrixian riffs and whammy swells, in the past decade or so. I think it's kind of funny, actually. It's been more blatant in the past few years, but you can find some real obvious nods to Jimi pretty easily in his songs.

What it is Thread? Uh, I think u borrowed the phrase "Hendrixian" from me! razz cool But yeah, this is no shock or surprise. Like u stated and like I and many others have stated to death on here in the past regarding this...P has been lifting from Jimi since forever. P has never tried to hide his love for Jimi and never will. What I'm surprised about is that so many people on this site is actually admitting that they even hear it. To me though, there is a more obvious nodd from Journey's "Faithfully" and Neal Schon's solo with P's solo in "Purple Rain" than it is in "Dreamer" and "Voodoo Child". To me, "Dreamer" is definately more "influenced" by Hendrix's sound and style overall moreso than it is being an actual "lift" from the song "Voodoo Child" or "Purple Haze".

This song is very much an ode to Hendrix from Prince, if you dont know that, then you obviously know very little about Prince music, and to be honest, you probably know F all about music in general..OR NOT?

That pretty much sums it up in a nutshell.

Actually welcome to 1979. To me, the solo to Bambi, the beginning melody that P plays, that repeated phrase, is VERY similar to the beginning of Hendrix's intro solo to "Purple Haze". To me anyways.

kind of....but I think it lifted form the whole "romanticism" movement....ada m ant and stuff...all that stuff was NEAT...Jimi's style was a bit more lose and flowing...princes was tight and fitting.

P's look on the PR tour was a combination of a heavy dose of Hendrix AND Sly. P was more on the New Romantic vibe with his look during the 1999 tour.
