I believe what is implied here is the abundance of overt praise words voiced for Prince's musical talent by other music figures especially during 1995-2002 or so. During those days you had pretty much everyone from Bono to Brian Eno, from Tommy Lee to Don Byron mentioning Prince as their favourite, and how much they "adored" (etc.) him. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that he was the "most respected" during those days, in fact I find it a rather fitting description.
However, I think the cultural climate has changed to a degree insofar as having to describe things anymore with expressions such as "most" or "best" would be seen as that relevant anymore. It has more to do with how enthusiastic teenagers describe things these days, as opposed to, well, more cynical adults.

There have been those fans have been saying Prince "has lost it" since 1985...when he went psychedelic....or 1989...when he "sold out" with Batman...or 1991...when he embraced hip hop to be more commercial...or 1993..when he changed his name to . Point being, some fans have always been waiting for Prince to be/sound like he used to rather than what he has been doing. "New Power slide...."

He'll always be one of the most respected musicians around merely for his back catalog. That won't ever change. However, at least in my eyes, and it would appear in the eyes of others here too, he's getting some tarnish on him. Worlds most beloved Orger
