I would still lov3 4 him 2 r3l3as3 a ballads album soon, as I think that would mor3 suit3 his ag3, a cool album of smooth soul ballads, or a compilation of his b3st ballads would b3 w3ll 3xc3ll3nt a r3ally unit shift3r.

And this the album many judged his affirmation to conservatism!

If you can define 'punk' (and I'm loathe to label or compartmentalise) as swimming against the current and standing up like a twisted nail no matter how hard or often the hammer comes down on you, then Prince is fucking punk. Then and now. Whenever or however you measure it. I think too many fans have been standing in the glow of the sun so long they're unaware they've been blinded.

No, not right at all. The main criticism is not that his conversion to the JW religion made Prince less sexual, but rather less inclusive and more judgemental.

Old Prince FTW.

I was speaking to the fact that fans bitch and moan about Prince being more conservative and often point to the Rainbow Children lyrics as THE example. Truth is, Prince being nasty on much of that album and (as number 23 was pointing out) Prince is very much the same.

Prince being "less inclusive" and "more judgemental" is a perception you have based on what? Interviews? Lyrics? Live performances? Ultimately any response you have to Prince is just to his self created persona anyways. We don't know the real guy...just what he projects to us.

I maintain that Prince has been uberChristian from day one and has always mixed the sexy with the divine. It is/was unconventional and as number23 said "punk". His love-God-sex mantra is (and never was) the norm or mainstream. If anything, it makes Prince more unconventional now than ever.

I don't know, to me, Prince just not that different from the past.

Lastly, I do think the number one critique of Prince being Jehovah's Witness is the seemingly toned down sexual lyrics, lack of swearing etc. Look around this site...

First of all, I actually have relatively little interest in Prince Rogers Nelson, or the "real" Prince in other words. I'm strictly talking about the projected "Prince" persona.

Yes, Prince has always mixed a celebration of the divine with his sexuality. That much has not really changed so much as matured. I have no contention with that aspect.

The primary difference is that Prince most typically emphasized the message that whatever God you believed in, and whatever personal path you chose, we would all one day ascend together regardless.

On TRC, the message is simply one that echoes the overarching JW sentiment: If you do not both accept the doctrinal beliefs and attempt to promulgate the beliefs to others ("do the work"), you will not survive the day of judgement.

That is radically different from the comparatively free spirited and fantastical image Prince used to portray, and I don't particularly like it.

The implication used to be that love is God. Now it is more that Jehovah is law.

So, "Old Prince" FTW. shrug

Point taken. However, I disagree with that idea that Prince used to emphasize a "whatever God you believed in" message. He has always pushed Jesus as the way to go in that aspect. It wasn't like his songs and stage show were laced with Islamic imagery and themes. It was always a Christian God that Prince dedicating his sexual conquests to. Maybe it was easier to sweep the meaning of "I would Die 4 U" aside, but it was/is about Jesus. Also, I think songs like "4 the Tears in Your Eyes" were fairly direct in letting fans know which god Prince was singing about. I mean, is The Cross really more vague than The Christ in terms of message? Symbols and words mean the same. prince means Prince. I dunno, maybe he has become more preachy since 1997, but he has always laced his stuff with Christian themes...not just a vague sense of "spirituality"...

I agree that his lyrics have always been inclusive and that hasn't change in my eyes. Songs like United States of Division, Get on the Boat, and Planet Earth have continued that theme.

Fair enough. I suppose the biggest difference in that regard is that now he's explicitly stated that the consequence of not agreeing with his view of the one true God is unequivocal death on Armageddon day.

Yes. It is stated now, rather than implied. That's the difference, I suppose. Thanks for the chat.
