small red beans wild blueberries red kidney beans pinto beans cultivated blueberries cranberries artichokes blackberries prunes raspberries strawberries red delicious apples Granny Smith apples pecans sweet cherries black plums russet potatoes black beans plums gala apples Fruits Many fruits are high in antioxidants, packed with vitamins, and beneficial in a myriad of ways. These include cranberries, red grapes, peaches, raspberries, strawberries, red currants, figs, cherries, pears, guava, oranges, apricots, mango, red grapes, cantaloupe, watermelon, papaya, and tomatoes Dried Fruits With the water removed, the antioxidant ratio is higher in dried fruits than in fresh. They can easily be carried with you in your purse, briefcase or car and they make a quick healthy snack. Consider taking along dried pears, plums, apples, peaches, figs, dates and raisins Vegetables Didn't your mother always tell you to eat your vegetables? Broccoli, spinach, carrots and potatoes are all high in antioxidants, and so are artichokes, cabbage, asparagus, avocados, beetroot, radish, lettuce, sweet potatoes, squash, pumpkin, collard greens and kale Spices and Herbs Using lots of spices in cooking is good. Many are loaded with antioxidants, like cinnamon, oregano, turmeric, cumin, parsley, basil, curry powder, mustard seed, ginger, pepper, chili powder, paprika, garlic, coriander, onion and cardamom. Herbs include sage, thyme, marjoram, tarragon, peppermint, oregano, savory, basil and dill weed. All contribute complexity and flavor to your meals, but also are high in antioxidants Cereals and Nuts Your morning corn flakes, oatmeal and granola bars pack a healthy punch, as do walnuts, hazelnuts, pistachio nuts, almonds, cashews, macadamia nuts and even that peanut butter sandwich Beverages Contrary to popular belief, most of our antioxidants come from beverages. Apple juice, cider, tomato juice, pomegranate juice and pink grapefruit juice seem obvious, and green tea has become very popular as a source, but black tea and plain tea have high levels also. Here's good news for those who love that cup of joe in the morning: coffee is high but should be consumed in moderation. Note that adding milk to coffee or tea blocks antioxidants. Speaking of moderation, red wine and especially beer (since it comes from grains) provide a big dose, and the healthy effects of moderate alcohol consumption have been well documented good job! we get more antioxidents from beverages becuase it is already in liquid form and our bodys don't have to work to split the fiber from the fruits and viggies to put it in lamens term. when ppl tell me I don't "look" 33 I am like "what is 33 supposed to look like?" at the end of the day it is about being healthy and feeling good about yourself as you are, but who wouldn't mind aging as gracefully as Prince and Sade? I eat alot of this stuff already, just not on a daily basis. I am going to start to try to eat at least one fruit, and one veggie everyday. I heard that when you cook veggies in water, like the artichokes, that you boil away the good stuff. Anyone know if this is true? and how else are you supposed to get them cooked? [Edited 1/24/09 20:24pm] There is some truth to that, it is possible to over cook vegetables to the point of cooking out the enzymes. This is why some people go as far as to adopt a raw food diet, which is mainly raw uncooked vegetables.

[Edited 1/24/09 20:24pm] That's true. If you must boil, you should only half-cook the food so it's still crunchy and doesn't lose all it's nutrients into the water. You know you're supposed to have at least 5 servings of fuit or veg every day? "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I know plenty of folks who at early as 50 make up and soft lighting is not going to make them look any younger, you have to have something to work with

Well, the italian kind and also natural sodas like hansens. But as far as cooking veggies, you can also drink the water/broth and still get your enzymes but from what I've been told by many a nutritionist is that you have to drink it immediately as the enzymes break down/evaporate or some shit.

So if you keep it overnight, it doesn't necessarily still have enzymes in them? yes...they say the same things about making your own juices, e.g. carrot juice or apple in one of those juice extractors. you have to conume it within so many hours or you lose the enzymes/vitamins - they break down. I guess thats why so many off the counter juices (store) have preservatives in them. with the broths, or the water left over after you boil your veggies, i was told the enzymes break down faster because of the heating process...verus juicing your fruits/veggies. Prince is a juicer ya know I mean drinks fresh juice.,
