Where did Prince learn to dance?

He must've taken some kind of class where they taught him a few moves or somthing right? I'm looking to take a creative dance class myself and I just wanted to know where did Prince get his moves. They are so hot! And he knows how to entertain with them

Right on point! Also, he absorbs and incorporates things with a stunning speed and thoroughness.

Anyway... he has in fact, worked with professional dancers throughout a large part of his career.

Yes, he is also a natural, but it has nothing 2 with race.

It might have nothing to do with race, but it has everything to do with him being a teenager in the 1970s. wink

A Neo-like abbility to bend the three dimentions to suit his will, a vampric form of soul osmosis sucking the skills out of others' bodies and God's own bubbling semen firing through his veins and operating his limbs, of course.

Or it might just be the intense course of professional dance lessons Prince and the Revolution took through the summer & autumn of 1983 in preperation for filming Purple Rain.

Although, I doubt such a mundane truth can answer the question!

As a number of die-hards know, when you slow down down the Dirty Mind videos by x175 or less, you can clearly see Prince performing lightning fast pirouettes, splits and backwards moonwalks in between the awkward Mick Jagger impersonations at normal speed. You know. The four-limbs-each-dancing-to-a-different-song dance.

Some of you like to think Prince popped out of Mattie's cooch with the typhoon hairdo while dancing the Detroit Crawl. I'll tell you how he learned to dance. Hard work, effort, great teachers, an overwhelming desire to succeed and - of course - a great deal of natural talent.

He's a genius, not Jesus.

So what happened to Lionel and Marvin?

Prince wasn't that great a dancer, i've neen watching him since the turn of his career. he's had the splits perfect, but everything else? it's all a matter of opinion, but i'm glad he concentrated on his musianship cause i never felt his dancing that much to be honest.

shrug

I know, a lame phonetic gag was more the dry biscuit bottom than the cherry on top. Especially a Messianic comparison coming from an atheist. I just wanted off the stage. Or the pot. Your choice.

Correct, although I think he'd already absorbed a LOT before that (as you say wink ), and the classes just helped consolidate, polish and extend what he could already do! The choreographer/teacher who taught him, said he was a natural dancer, had great elevation, and worked very hard. And ....very cool post, who ARE you? lol

He's a GREAT dancer!! wink I've said before if he'd trained in dance, he probably could have been an amazing ballet dancer, like Nureyev or something! He's SO graceful, it's one of the things I really love about him. Well, he's funky too, of course!

Apparently, some of you haven't seen footage of Prince in concert pre-Controversy. He did not always have the seemingly natural rhythm that he exhibits today. In fact, it's kind of painful to watch some of the Dirty Mind tour vids I have as his dance moves are not rhythmic. I would say that he danced like he knew where the beat was, and that was it.

I do not know how he learned to dance, but my money would be on extensive lessons from someone.

Prince may have had some professional instruction...yet over a period of time...Music itself teaches us how 2 dance.

If I was to answer that question I would say that everything from Motown 2 Classic Rock was the teacher. cool

Not sure how true this is but I heard there was a time when Paula Abdul was working with him and it certainly wasn't a song collaboration...it was def something to do with dance.

Maybe he was teaching her!

I know Prince isn't a brilliant dancer but who else can dance as good as him wearing high heels and holding a guitar.

It's once of the things I miss about his shows!

I swear the Org is so odd sometimes. It was just the other day I read someone complaining about how Prince dances like an old white man and had several people laughing and agreeing with them.

Now this :p
I wanna be loved to the 9s, so let me cover your ass with this sheet, and baby, you better stay on the beat! Cause you know the Karma Sutra? I can rewrite it. But, with half as many words.

Aaagggghhh... Prince IS a brilliant dancer, are we all watching different shows?! Ok, he's 50 now so, you know! But just watch SOTT, I'm a trained dancer and I think his dancing is amazing. I think it's because people are used to a certain style of dancing now, (which all looks exactly the same) that they can't appreciate how good his dancing was
