man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

It does seem that from the interview that Prince is concerned about not making good money from new music.

I guess what I am wondering is how much money is Prince or a record company wanting to make off of any of the music? I thought Prince did not care about having hits anymore. I guess without having hits he cannot show he will sell alot units of the album so he cannot get alot of money for the new music upfront. So Prince will have to make his money off of touring which seems to be what alot of artists do nowadays.

In the 90's Prince wanted to be independent from the industry and I thought he made it work for himself. Now it seems he wants to be part of the industry again. I am not sure he is a relevant as he used to be so he may not command alot of money anymore. Prince may have to just settle for the position he is in as an elder member of the music community and while that garners him alot of respect it may not get him more money. Steady work, steady attention, and a steady income but not constant STAR attention. Prince would have to work hard at reinventing himself, tour more consistently, really promote himself instead of the constant "hit 'n run" strategy.

I guess Prince is in a bit of a crossroads, maybe not. Maybe it is all hype and drama for the next album.

And I disagree that Prince has not had good music in the last 15 years. It has just not been consistent as it used to be. Actually it is ashame Prince could not come to some agreement with Warner Bros and maybe some remasters would happen.

I think the money these days is in touring, and you can only tour on your past hits so many times.

There's also a lot of coin to be made releasing old stuff and live shows.

I don't believe he's done with new music but I think he's in a weird state of not knowing what to do with music right now, especially since he's put himself in this anti-internet box that I wish he'd get out of. In any event, something will happen that will make us happy, I'm sure of it.

Sad thing is we have a lot of buzzards on this site that would be thrilled to see Prince stop making new music. They think they'll get some music from the vault instead but I'm sure that Prince would laugh in their faces and say "HELL NO HEHEHEHEHE"! lol Wait, he might do a new master of Sign O The Times or Lovesexy: The JW Remix to make those fans happy. evillol

confused Whatever...

Thing was he HAD a good model and destroyed it because everyone else got the clue as well (though the major labels have yet to do anything). I have yet to see another artist to offer what he did on his site. I really don't know what his issue is, but it seems like it's all about the biggest bang for his buck and $$$, $$$ and more $$$.

These days, I view Prince as a sell out in terms of how he chooses to put his music out there. If he really was concerned about the money, I can think of at least a dozen ways he can make bank...

-Remaster and rerelease his old catalog. Really it's all what most people want.
-Put back up his website
-Cull from his vault
-Stop the bootleggers (if there are any) by beating them at their own game and releasing better quality versions of live performances.
-Um how about a compilation that goes over his material after WB?
-Stop treating avid fans and casual fans with disdain
[Edited 12/2/08 9:53am]

He's not doing it, but there's some great remastering of his prime product out there, Foefur being a prime example. The remastering of Jill Jones & The Family album are especially gr8!

He's just doing it in hopes that a good looking man will come up and give him a good whip

Hey here's an idea, maybe he's NOT a fag?? Anyone consider that?...
But then maybe he is... Seems a little unlikely, but it seems that so many here desperately want him to be for some reason... Whatever...

I don't think this should be taken seriously at all.

As I said in another thread:

There will be new music released... U know he already has more than an album in the can of new stuff. U just need patience, and if U make music yourself, then get 2 it... I get my main musical fix from myself.

Please consider the fact that since Prince has been so prolific in his output over the years, that we R a much different breed of listener than those who don't listen 2 Prince. Their favourite artists' releases are often 2-4 years apart, and aren't nearly as challenging, diverse, and rich as a Prince release. We all have 2 come 2 terms with our high expectations. It is always darkest before the Dawn.

[b]"Today, it's not realistic to expect to put out new music and profit from it. There's no point in trying to put new music out there and keep it from being (exploited),"

Where does this say or even imply that he will not release any new music anymore?

He is just pointing things out, not saying he will not release new music anymore, just that the old ways are not profitable anymore. We all know Prince is very suave in finding other ways than record companies to get his music out and still make money from it.

And, to a certain degree, I still think Prince should make a somewhat more balanced decision on what he wants; respect as a musician and getting his music out there no matter what or profit. It's not often Prince just puts something out there just for the music, but only if he's got something to gain from it, like a record release (TGE material leak to the radio) or to vent his anger when people call his bluff (F.U.N.K.)

It made me doubt his sincerity, over the years and is probably the reason his music too often is dull and uninspired; the stuff that drives him is too dull for the masses and will only appeal to cultists and collectors. It was too long ago that the man made a record that sold itself (you know; music people actually WANT to play; GOOD music) or even one that was even remotely aimed to please.

It was always Prince, Prince, Prince, but Prince at least got PLAYED during the days the record companies were still in power. Now he is just a nostalgia act, revamping disco, covering middle of the road artists and making a fool of his own words in "Don't Play Me"; 'My only competition is… well, me in the past', as he seems only interested in revamping his own sounds, but without the edge he used to have.

Cutting edge? Hell no; he's like a cardboard cut out of his former self, imagining a wonderful world, but without the happiness and joy he used to be able to infuse into his music back in the day, mostly just cranking out watered down musings of his cornered soul and just able to channel the spirit that made him an interesting composer/performer ever so slightly the last fifteen years.
