i think he has a fantastic voice, and that he can hold up in concert makes me all the more impressed by his vocals.

What about real voices like Shirley Bassey, Bette Midler and Barbra Streisand, where the heck are they. Streisand is regardless as the greatest pop singer of all time.

Apparently the people compiling the list have never heard of these iconic women shrug and apparently Christina Augilera's (cant spell lol) is sooo much better than all three confuse

The ones 'whining' here about Bob Dylan being that high on the list, probably dont seem to grasp what good 'singing' is about.

At least, that is my opinion.

Its not in the first place about vocal acrobatics and showing off how technically 'good' you are (Whitney, Celine, Mariah), neither its about singing 'perfectly' or as smooth as possible (Vandross).

Just like the rest of the music, a good singer should be authentic sounding, expressive and 'real' in the first place.

So, people like Dylan, Lennon and Tom Waits might not mimick the articulation excersises taught during vocal lessons, or they might be lousy when it comes to the 'control' of their breathe, but their voices perfectly fit the music they are playing. With their 'technical imperfection' and characteristeric sound, they touch way deeper then superficial 'singers' like Celine Dion and Mariah Carey.

Some complaints / remarks about the list:

First, its overly USA-orientated. Where are the Irish and english folk-godesses like June Tabor and Mary Black? Where is the english in your face, gutter-sneer by the likes of John Lydon (Sex Pistols) and Liam Gallagher (Oasis)? And what about non-english singers like the French chanson king Jacques Brel or probably the best African singer: Youssou n'Dour?

Second, some very 'weird' choices that ask for explanation: Don Henley? Other country-rockers like Gram Parsons and Gary Louris (Jayhawks) can outsing him any moment.
Stevie Nicks? a horrible, scraping voice. There are hundreds of far better female singers.
Annie Lennox? overrated 'ice-queen' lacking soul.
Axl Rose? come on...
Christina and Tina? ....
Elton John? good singer-songwriter, but a limited voice.

Third, some ommissions that really should be on the list IMO:
Michael Stipe from REM: weither it are his unenunciated, mystical vocals from the early years, or his more full-out singing during the succes years. Whiney crybaby Thom Yorke should simply be replaced by Stipe on this list.
What do we need Morrisey for, when we have Neil Finn from Crowded House?
Nick Drakes vocals are more tender and breakable then those of Art Garfunkel.
Where is Johnny Cash? He should be on the list in the place of Merle Haggard.

Fourth, Barry Gibb (or any other Bee Gee) surely dont belong on such a list. Get a grip... lol

Fifth and last, of course (based on personal preference) Van Morrison belongs in the top 10. biggrin

i like to think i'm pretty open minded and that i can wrap my head around new ideas that maybe don't make sense on the surface.

that said, if my inability to consider bob dylan a great singer makes me closed minded and provincial, then that's just gonna have to be my cross to bear.

his voice may be DISTINCTIVE, and to fans it may be a trademark of the whole experience of enjoying him as an artist, but ain't no way i can call his singing "great".

and if i'm the only person on earth who feels that way, that's just fine. it's only my opinion. but i'm not gonna change it. lol

I would consider Prince voice great. He has a rock and r&b voice. A lot of people don't have that gift. His voice might not be techical or perfect but he has shown a great amount of emotion in his singing such as joy, anger, and pain.

I don't get how people think Dylan is a great singer. Lets see him sing The Most Beautiful Girl in the World. That's problem #1 with the list, problem #2 is that Barry Gibb is nowhere on the list.

a couple of stories about Barry's vocal work.

When George Martin produced the Bee Gees/Frampton version of Sgt Pepper, he had Barry record the same track over and over. Barry thought they were just doing another take, but Martin was recording multiple tracks to make Barry sound like multiple singers singing together. Barry's vocals were too perfect and the multiple tracks sounded like 1 singer. He had to tell Barry what he was doing for it to work.

When the Bee Gees wrote the song Immortality for Celine Dion which barry produced. Barry and Celine sang scales to warm up - Barry could go higher in the scales than she could.

interesting
