From araound 1995-2000 it seemed like he was making as many new videos as recording new tunes, he made a phenominal ammount of promos during this time most of which were rarely ever broadcast.

Just out of curiousity, what do you all think the reasoning for shooting these videos is? Especially if the video probably won't be seen, what is the point of spending the money and time and talent to produce one?
I'm not being sarcastic. I just wonder from the business or artistic standpoint what the purpose would be...

I've just finished downloading 7 DVDs in the Royal Visions set, so I'll be famming out, watching them pretty soon when I get a free weekend day. Lots of new stuff (for me) to be perused.

I doubt his vidz cost that much to make and I doubt there was that much talent aside from himself and his band involved. I think he makes them for himself or perhaps at the time he thought about having a satelite broadcast or maybe releasing a box set of vidz, who knows. Perhaps he just wanted to piss off warners

'I Like It There' was streamed on the old NPGMC site as a Cyberclip I seem to recall 'Hot Wit U' being aired at the first Celebration at Paisley Park in 2000 and possibly streamed across the official site at some point. ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

I think at the time when the music is still new to him he is into it, but by the time it hits the fans he has lost interest and has moved on to the next project...at least in the past I think that was the case. Escpecially the 90s. TRUE BLUE

the hot wit u video would have been better if eve was actually in the video man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I know a lot of people around here despise that song, but "Hot Wit U" was the obvious 1st single, then TGRES. It didn't help when he was promoting it in the states that he didn't do the lead single (I think maybe once). Then to top it off, on the Rave dvd, he only did half of the song. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Artist's paint but they don't sell everything or hang everything on the wall. Artist's do what they do. store some, scrap some, give some, sell some. Yes, I agree with you, Tame. Like when you record an album of 10 songs, it's good to record, say, 30 songs and then pick the absolute best 10.... Cream of the crop type thing. But, I guess for anyone other than Prince, the production costs that go into a music video are very high! Surely with new technology they're not as high as when they made Michael Jackson's "Thriller", but from what I hear major label artists still are given a video "budget" which is pretty costly...

' I seem to recall 'Hot Wit U' being aired at the first Celebration at Paisley Park in 2000 Yeah - it was definitely shown at the first celly. I think it was a remix version (nasty mix?) and I think it was shown a lot... "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

Didn't I read/hear a report a few weeks ago that Prince was looking into starting his own TV network (either online or on the airwaves)? **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

I think in all honesty some of the promos were just vanity projects, occasionally played at gigs or on the tv monitors at Glam Slam where I recall seeing many of them. As for the expense, I'm sure I remember reports of lawsuits filed by some of the film makers over non payment for some of these projects.
All of his promos were available on Youtube etc until the recent actions by his lawyers. Thankfully I managed to grab all these clips before they were removed from the site and am lucky enough to have every promo to date... including his bizarre home movie from 88 which if I think was named "A Hard Life"??
