I could write all day about why I'm a Prince fan, he's like a great great boxer who reveals another layer of greatness with every oppurtunity. Let's start with his unique character, he has some of the hugest balls ever in the pop world. He's always put what people say about him on the backburner whether it's that he's gay, insane,an asshole or whatever. This also fuels his constant release of new music, he is prolific and has faith in himself when no one else does. He may be past his creative prime but he hasn't accepted that and he shouldn't. Duke Ellington and other great composers have tried to outdo themselves right up until their deaths, that speaks of a strength which has nothing to do with talent and Prince has it.
I remember being a kid and hearing controversy and loving the song and realizing there was something about it, that all great music has that cannot be defined. He was still regarded as an oddball and I wouldn't call myself a fan at that time, then 1999 came out and those songs had the same magic. I recall sneaking out my mom's 1999 cassette and listening to Little Red Corvette over and over and over again when I was 15. It was a spiritual moment for me, I had heard the radio version and loved it but was not prepared for the full version which was orgasmic. In the dark I kept rewinding that tape and I still have full recall of how I would stop the tape each and every time right at the very end of 1999. Like I say, it was just one of those magic moments. Then, of course, Purple Rain, that is the movie where i decided to be a musician myself. So much talent, I can only stand in awe at all the things he did well at that time and shake my head. Nowadays I play Little Red Corvette all the time on Piano and it has the same effect on audiences that it had on me, it's simply mesmerizing and gets people cheering,dancing and jumping. Just the other day someone asked me about Nirvana and whether I was a fan, it just makes me realize that someone lowered the bar dramatically for excellence. The man is a force of nature, like Beethoven,Ellington or Ali and I'm a fan for life.
