dave grohl on prince

D: Oh he did best of you (laughs). What’s funny is he did that at the Superbowl in America. He did the half time show at the Superbowl last year and that’s a huge gig, that’s like 80 bazillion people watch that when it happens. And we heard a week before that he was going to do best of you and I was like ‘What?’ ‘Why’, he has got a hundred hits. Why is he doing one of ours that’s crazy? When I saw it tears came to my eyes because I grew up listening to Prince. That guy is a musical genius. He’s an incredible drummer, he’s an incredible guitarist, he’s an incredible songwriter. He’s magic. That guy is unbelievable so when someone you hold in such high regard, when someone like that covers one of your songs you got to pinch yourself because it doesn’t feel real. But the other day when he did at the 02 arena at the same time within that hour we were playing on the MTV music awards in America we were doing a prince song with Cee-lo from Gnarls Barkley and so we were doing Darling Nicky with Cee-lo singing at the same time as he was doing ‘Best of You’.

I'm glad Grohl took it this way b/c the word was that Prince covered the Foo's song to outdo the Foo's (and make them look bad) b/c he thought their cover of "Darling Nikki" sucked.

Grohl is a cool guy.

This is a great quote. Where did you get it from?

I really hope Prince didn't cover The Best Of You just to out do their version of Darling Nicky. That would really suck!

I've always thought David Grohl was a bit of a Prince fan!
Shut up already, damn.

I think Prince's initial take on covers is that he doesn't like them or think anyone's worthy of singing his songs, but there are exceptions. He certainly didn't mind Tina Turner doing Let's Pretend We're Married. I'm sure he liked Alicia Keys doing How Come You Don't call me anymore.

I actually felt that him doing The Best of You was something of an apology for making a snap judgement about Darling Nikki. He probably didn't know who Dave Grohl was at the time. Maybe someone hipped him to the fact that he was a "real musician."

Why do people always assume P doesnt know about artists and has to be "hipped" to them? The negro dont live in a cave. lol
And plus, he's a muscisian himself...I'd think he be more informed on other acts than most ppl.

Yeah he's a musician interested in making music. He has said that if he gets in his car & listens to music that it's his own music.

No doubt he's in the business & knows plenty of musicians (especially the ones he grew up listening to) but I actually think he does live in a sort of purple cave lol I don't think he's very interested in other peoples' new music, particularly non-hot non-female rock bands.

I'd wager Prince has never listened to a Nirvana's NEVERMIND album. I'm sure there's a lot he hasn't listened to. I doubt he's listened to the great English songwriter/guitarist Richard Thompson. And I'm sure there's a lot of obscure artists and songs he digs that we have never heard of.

Well, I know one thing. The Foo's cover of Darling Nikki ranks among the top 3 Prince covers EVER. They took it places Prince couldn't or wouldn't. Where they made DN rawer to actually improve the song, Prince made 'The best of You' slicker which actually does the lyrics a bit more justice. No matter if it's any kind of rivalry, they delivered two great performances.

BTW, I love the Foo's.....

Well, with all these new songs showing up lately that Prince seems to have borrowed from some time or the other, I guess he DOES listen to a lot of other artists....

It seems like P's "Best Of You" cover was more in the scheme of things of what he wanted to say concerning his former relationship.

It was like his public middle digit.

I think if he wasn't kewl with the Foo's cover he would have trumped 'em at an aftershow.

I can hear him doing "I'll Stick Around".

LMFAO @ the cave comment!!

Dave would have had to get permission to cover Darling Nikki on MTV since its televised.I highly doubt Prince would rearrange his lineup to outdo something on the other side of the continent in a different time zone toshow someone up.Prince is obviously a fan or he wouldnt have covered their song or allowed the song to be covered by the Foos.

Where did you get that quote from?

I think Prince often chooses covers for the occasion, he's pretty savvy in that respect

Not to say he doesn't follow pop music and is aware of a lot of stuff. It's not like 'Creep' is a recent song, at 15 years old, it's relatively ancient and a classic to boot.

Prince has an unbelievable musical vocabulary and almost photographic musical memory. Look at the liner notes to ONA and see all the great music he is "in to" let alone the stuff that he catches in the environment.
