I'm glad Grohl took it this way b/c the word was that Prince covered the Foo's song to outdo the Foo's (and make them look bad) b/c he thought their cover of "Darling Nikki" sucked.

Grohl is a cool guy.

Oh please....

The slander never stops here...

Key phrase that leads me to believe that this is another tall-internet-tale (whcih seem to thrive here and other places):

"the word was".

I doubt he's listened to the great English songwriter/guitarist Richard Thompson. And I'm sure there's a lot of obscure artists and songs he digs that we have never heard of.”

Personally I think both Endorphinmachine and Gold are addressed to Cobain.

Hold up, wait a minute
Ain't no good unless somebody else is in it
U there with the cynical disposition [ie Cobain]
Perhaps U'd like 2 join us in a mission
Of fishin' 4 logic in a think tank
Unless, of course, U're feelin' like a punk and take the bank [ie Nevermind selling millions]
But every now and then there comes a time U must defend
Your right 2 die and live again, live again, live again
Get up, get up, get in
The Endorphinmachine

There's an ocean of despair
There are people livin' there
They're unhappy each and every day
But hell is not fashion so what U [Cobain] tryin' 2 say?

Could be wrong, but I remember thinking that 'Gold' was Prince's answer to Grunge, and more specifically Nevermind.

I totally agree with this point and I've had these thoughts myself for a long time.

Also to emphasise this point Prince changed the lyrics of 'Creep' (did I mention I saw this at Coachella biggrin ) to take away the meaning of self-loathing and turn into a song about self-respect.

I think Prince was trying to send them a message.

Ahh shucks that's why I love Prince!

that's pretty interesting. I have no doubt that Prince was aware of grunge & cobain (he mentioned him by name once) and watching the Morning Papers video, he was wearing flannel & stage (or piano?) dove. PLus he went more rock by 95-96, and even contributed his own "angry" album Chaos & Disorder (that wasn't exactly grunge lol)

you could be right, and it could also be a reference to the general down nature of the early 90's. But you could easily be right, Cobain's story was one of the biggest of the 90's.

- I was surprised when Michael B said Prince was listening to Primus back in the NPG days. And he covered Radiohead, so he must pay attention to the rock bands, but sometimes I think he is too much focused on R&B/pop artists.

D: Oh he did best of you (laughs). What’s funny is he did that at the Superbowl in America. He did the half time show at the Superbowl last year and that’s a huge gig, that’s like 80 bazillion people watch that when it happens. And we heard a week before that he was going to do best of you and I was like ‘What?’ ‘Why’, he has got a hundred hits. Why is he doing one of ours that’s crazy? When I saw it tears came to my eyes because I grew up listening to Prince. That guy is a musical genius. He’s an incredible drummer, he’s an incredible guitarist, he’s an incredible songwriter. He’s magic. That guy is unbelievable so when someone you hold in such high regard, when someone like that covers one of your songs you got to pinch yourself because it doesn’t feel real. But the other day when he did at the 02 arena at the same time within that hour we were playing on the MTV music awards in America we were doing a prince song with Cee-lo from Gnarls Barkley and so we were doing Darling Nicky with Cee-lo singing at the same time as he was doing ‘Best of You’.

He did 'Best of You' at the 02?? Which day was this??
