what made u a prince fan? purple day everyone!
most of my love for prince is because of my dad. id never consider him a real prince fan, but the first time i heard prince music was when he played the parade lp, followed by 1999, purple rain, around the world in a day... but my best childhood memory must b me singing p control in his car as a 4 year old, when it was kinda brand new as a 16 year old its hard 2 find your own way 2 prince music, so the first step had 2 be made because of my dad (thank you!!), but what happened after that first step was incredible. im a prince fan through and through and although my schoolmates say he's gay and looks like a woman and sings like a woman, i simply claim "u dont have a single fucking clue." plus there are hardly any young prince fans in austria, a small country in the middle of europe. in the 80s it was different - u meet loads of "former" prince fans, aged between 30 and 40 and they usually became fans just by listening 2 him on the radio. but apart from that, what made u a "prince fan"?

Hmm. It all sort of happened at once. The first time I was actually exposed to him was the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performance. I was amazed, but I didn't really like him still. My friend had Ultimate and it was like "ok, wtf? Prince? Are you serious." But I grew to like songs like LRC and Raspberry Beret and of course When Doves Cry. And I was like "Maybe he ain't so bad" and shortly after, he did the super bowl. And that was that. I got PR (upon hearing Computer Blue I almost shat myself because of that solo) and as I started collecting his stuff, his influence on me slowly seeped it's way into my music. He really gave me the confidence as a musician to step outside the box, and not to be afraid to experiment with different things, and he gave me the confidence to start writing lyrics and playing other instruments besides guitar. It really changed my attitude when it came to creative stuff/art. Maybe we can go to the movies and cry together

At 12 or 13 years old, staring at the "Prince" cover, it was a puppy love crush..although I learned immediately that I loved the love that came through the music. Year after year...as Prince became more of a beautiful man and musician, all I can say is that Prince carried me as a fan, from yesterday in, 78'79'....Into the love within, "Planet Earth." And I know to believe that there is a Prince I love in tomorrow. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

When I was like 12, I heard Adore, and fell in love =D.
So I had to listen to more Prince music. Your lips would make a lollipop too happy.

when I Wanna Be Your Lover came out!. I loved that song! I wasnt allowed to by the album (strict Grandmother---none of "that" music in her house!) but I did keep up with him on the radio, and thank God For Right On, Rock and Soul, and Black Beat mag's...they kept me current until my Grandmother finally got a VCR player one Christmas, and gave me a personal gift for it..The movie Purple Rain!!! I was so happy, and then it was okay for Prince Albums to be in my house. I think my Grandmother likes his music, but was scared when I was younger that I just might understand some of the things he was singing about. Anyway I Have been a Prince Fan since I was old enough to go to the record store and buy my 45's @ 2 for 98 cents.....thats a long time!!!

Im like you, 16 and a prince fan. Got into him after the Brits 06 performance. It's quite shocking my peers reaction to him as a person and his music. People who are my age who don't really know him have this automatic assumption he is gay, when if you listen to his music I dont think it is in anyway possible to get that impression. He is a completely under-rated guitarist as well, when i say he is a legend on the guitar people look at me blankly, not even knowing he plays guitar. Most people only know 'kiss' and 'black sweat' here in London anyway, I just wish I could educate them more lol

My mom got me hooked..she bought the purple rain special edition dvd.. heard her screaming and singing along to it..then she called me in the room to watch the movie with her..after that.. watched it over and over..then started buying all his albums...getting pictures..putting the lovesign on my notebooks..and a year later.. went to a show he did in Chicago with Tamar and actually met the MAN..after that night.. swear had a new creative energy permenantly installed in my soul..God gave prince something special..and luckily..some of that rubbed off on me! ..In her chills, I'll force a burst..Erotic thrills, so good, it hurts..My motions 2 her velvet, she'll strike it as love..Rain from her pelvis..ended with doves..

Purple Rain came out when I was about 4 years old and my parents had it on laserdisc (Only people older than 25 will know what I am talking about. I wasn't in to Prince then, but I knew who he was. When the Symbol album came out in 92, I bought it and my friend got Diamonds and Pearls for Christmas a couple of weeks later. Over the course of the next couple of months, we each started buying more and more Prince stuff from a cd club until we each had about 10 discs. Since then I have been a big fan and my friend is an even bigger fan. To this day the symbol album is still my favorite. I abdicated the throne in Ithaca, but now I am...

I used to be really into Michael Jackson, so my Mums friend thought I'd be interested in P!
She lent me her Purple Rain DVD & TGE, I haven't been the same since & I'm no longer into Michael Jackson as much as I was! It's all about the funk baby!

Been a fan since I was a tiny kid, since maybe 1979. He was a fixture on r&b radio back then. In elementary school his song "Still Waiting" was very popular for when you had a crush on someone in your class. Thanks to my big sister, who was a teenager, and thanks to my parents knowing zero about his stage persona or his lyrical content, Prince was actually my first concert and I was so excited to be with my sister and all her hip high school girlfriends, I believe this was during the Controversy era. In retrospect that show was SO inappropriate for a pre-teen .But aside from his lewdness and his mania I did come out of his shows with a healthy respect for musicians and showmanship.
