DIRTY MIND/CONTROVERSY/1999: Memories of the past (2)...

Okay... let's hear your stories about these 2:

I'll start: As U all know by now, NOT A FAN then. I did like "Controversy", tho. I remember my Mom freaking out because P did the Lord's prayer at the end. I wasn't allowed to listen to it! lol
When 1999 came out, My cousin had it, so I'd hear it. I didn't hate it, but I wasn't hooked yet.

Years later, when my Mom was working in the mall, she found a bag in the parking lot. It had the 1999 lp, and 2 tapes (Purple Rain and one other) in it. Those were the first Prince albums I owned. I remember listening to "DMSR" and "Delirious" over & over. music
(but I still wouldn't commit to being a fan. confused)

YOUR TURN!!!! biggrin

I was 1, 2 and 3 when DM, Controversy and 1999 were released. 1999 was the first time I heard of Prince. I was 4 when I saw the videos for Little Red Corvette and 1999 and I liked those songs, especially 1999. I didn't hear any material from Dirty Mind & Controversy until I was 8 and I was shocked. I thought Prince had started out with 1999, plus seeing the DM & Uptown videos with his outfit was crazy. lol I dug the songs and eventually I got the CD's when I was 19 & 20 and I dig them a lot to this day.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Trust me, I didn't go anywhere near Prince until 1983, he was too freaky for me.

As said b4 my friends brother turned me on by handing over copies of the 1st 2 albums eye had asked 4..and after hearing'DIRTY MIND/CONTROVERSY/1999' I was effin' Diggin' Prince. It may sound crazy, some ppl say P was 2 freaky. Well- CALL me a FREAK. These albums confirmed me a Prince fan 4-ever. I would just lay back and listen 2 the albums alone,at first. the music and lyrics coming out my speakers..got my attention. eye knew that it was ranchy and raw..lovely innocent/sexy/sex/and rebellious..and the music just went along with those words as if they spoke the same language, cause they did. I knew that what i was hearing said something..something important and not,and it was an adventure digging deeper past the raw beauty.
Hey eye was young and this was screaming something 2 me. eye had 2 listen.
much heart all*

i became a fan during 1999 ..i was watching videos and saw 1999 vid.. dude jumpin' around in a long glitter purplish trench coat...i said he had a cute face, but i wasnt impressed @ all of him or the video .. k so, then later that day.. this jam comes on the radio and it was groovin'.. i mean GROOVIN'.. dancing jig so.. i cant wait til the end of the song..for the DJ to announce who this was jammin' like that... and the DJ comes on yellin' ..he also is jammin'and he comes over the radio yellin' "My man Prince! with Lady Cab Driver!!" .. and they played the whole extended 8 minutes of Lady Cab Driver on the radio back then... .. and i was like .. eek that's the dude i just saw jumpin' around in that other vid .... ive been a fan ever since....

Whoo-WEE!! I was already a fan from the beginning and this era just SOLIDIFIED that! These albums were the soundtrack to my undergraduate college years. Man, when the DJ put those albums on, it would turn those Detroit parties OUT! dancing jig 1999 is my all time favorite Prince album, but I really didn't declare it as such until years later.

1999 was the first Album of Prince's I was introduced to as a whole. I can remember looking at the cover after my father handed it to me and going... "Naaaaa... that can't be what I think it is."

Of course it was.

Had 1999 on vinyl in my folks collection until they sold it, didn't really having any lasting impression on me. I still stand by that, I can appreciate the album developmentally, but I love Dirty Mind more than 1999.

dirty mind i got after becoming a fan in 1984, but my reaction 2 the lyrical content was eek right on man!!! sister had me tripping and head had my headbang in full swing

controversy is different in the sense that i remember hearing it at the age of 11 but not knowing who it was. I asked my brother if he liked it and he said yeah but didn't get me details on who it was and all. well after picking that album up after 1984, and it came with that infamous poster. i knew i couldn't hang that shit in my bedroom, my father would have beat my ass lol. so i gave it 2 a girlfriend at the time. the music was crazy and sexuality 2 this day is my favorite track off that album followed by controversy and let's work. hearing do me baby with all that sexual innuedo through my libido in2 overdrive

now 1999 is a different beast all 2gether, i knew who prince was via the videos on mtv and let's just say that my thoughts were of a basing it on his "sexuality" as apposed 2 what the music was saying. i thought the songs 1999 and little red corvette were cool but nothing 2 go gaga over. i remember hearing dmsr over the radio and digging the groove but didn't connect that this was prince. funny how ur future is shaped and u look back at the pieces of ur life and giggle
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81
