GOVINDA.. choas and disorder is pure shit!! sign o' the times blows that album away. i'm stuck in reality. the 90's works are alright but nothing on the dirty mind,1999, purple rain, atwiad, and parade level. those were prince's defining pieces of work L4one another! prince's 90's work on a whole is okay at best.

Matter of opinion and taste I guess....but I think saying C&D is pure shit is unfair;it demonstrates how P is capable of doing something completely different and that`s why as a P fan I like and respect him so much!
But I agree with you,the 90`s work is average except for the 2 albums I mentionned earlier.

Hmm, at the moment my ipod is devoid of his 90's work after my computer crashed and burned. I'm not in a rush to put it back on. I have everything from 78-89 back on it, a shedload of bootlegs from the 90's, and everything he's done after 2000.

I can live without the likes of GB, D&P, C&D, NPS and Emancipation etc. to be honest.

Masterpiece is definitely what I call many of P's albums but I have been a fan since day 1 so I am a little bit more ingrained than some of you but that is not to say that you are not a fan just that I am one of those people that you call a fam because I love everything he has put out. But it is all a subjected matter. I love PE because I don't have the expectations that a cd of music is going to give me the feelings that I got from old album from when I was in school as a child. But to each his or her own. I'm sure someone will say I need to quit drinking the Koolaid. And I don't own the boots that so many of you all will bring up like the Small Club that I would love to hear just from a fans point of view but Prince can make all different kinds of music and with differing varying degrees of styles. And I love them all, hahahahahahah. I AM MAD I TELL YOU!!!

From 1980-1988 Prince was flying through the skies creatively. Batman saw him coming back to earth, and he never quite got his plane fixed after that, but he was still putting out incredible tunes. They were just less frequent. It wasn't until New Power Soul that he finally lost all traces of his former majesty. Still great live though.

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I do not agree either.

SOTT was an amazing album, plus it was a double album which was rare for 1987.

Several of Prince's albums would rank as masterpieces in their own right since then. SOTT was just the first of a new standard for Prince's albums so that has given SOTT a special place in music history. Not many other artists have matched the quality of SOTT.

I would put 1999, Purple Rain, Parade, SOTT, Black, Lovesexy, prince, Gold, Emancipation, Crystal Ball, and Planet Earth in the Masterpiece realm.

SOTT always has a special place in my heart. I was 17, a senior in HS getting ready for college, and had just gone to Paris with my HS French class, in fact the album came out while I was in Paris. I was still saturated with the Parade material so going to Paris just amplified the time and fused all that music in my soul.

Lovesexy spiritually helped me survive a early college experience and still is a source of inspiration.

Rainbow Children may be the true Prince Masterpiece, it is truly a work of art, in a class by itself.

So I would say The Rainbow Children is the last great masterpiece.

I am sure there are more to come.

I agree that SOTT is his last really great album, (I hate to use the term Masterpiece)

I don’t know about you guys,.... I know it's all relative and subjective and all, but i think you guys are letting your famdom get the better you.

My point being is, since 87 I have bought tons of cds, and most are much much better than anything Prince has done since 87, so does that mean that my U2, Nirvana and White Stripes CD's are among my "Super Masterpieces"?
I just thought they were pretty good.
